I was talking to someone about my engine. Starting to think I should have replaced the pistons because they take a beating from the pressed wrist pin and can cause a knocking/klaking type sound at certain rpms under load.
Car never did this before the rebuild so I never thought of it. It also didn't start to do it for a little bit after I had it up and running. Possible conclusion that maybe tight rings and break in on the used pistons took their toll on it.
Who really knows.
Once I get that crank key replaced, I'll see if it changes anything, but it doesn't seem like it will.
Oy vey, I feel like such a tard. Damn K car.

wristpin knock is common on these. Does it rattle like crazy at like 2000-3000 rpm? Thats what i thought was happening with my R thats why we took the engine apart. But all the pins turned out to be perfect, so we concluded it was piston slap

Nasty little buggers, they could use replacing now more than ever.

Free revving in neutral or park doesn't produce any noise, but it always makes the noise during the 1-2 shift which is generally around that rpm, and it gets louder ther warmer the car gets.

piston slap is heard at all rpm's. I have 3 engines that have it. And it is nasty sounding.

From what I understand, piston slap has to do with the piston wiggling in the bore. What I am talking about is the wrist pins wearing some play into the pistons.

I was saying that if your noise is rpm dependant it may not be piston slap, your wrist pins could have worn themselves loose. of course lack of oil didn't help any.

i agree on the wrist pin(its common) also the piston slap its due to short skirts on the pistons so need to run tight clearances.
