Reason for cancellation......no safety steward.
SCCA regulations require a licensed safety steward to be present. Several of the regular stewards are on their way to Kansa for the Solo Nationals.

Plans are under way to have a safety steward class at the next Gainesville event. The class will be Fri night. By working and a deputy steward both Sat and Sun will then qualify these people to be full fledged stewards.

I had the same problem in Gainesville a year ago when the assigned steward did not show. Upon calling his cell phone he stated that he was in Jacksonville and would not be available. That practice was cancelled.

If you are interested in becoming a steward contact Frank Edwards at the event tomorrow, or at the CFR website.

Beyond that, it was an invitation only practice and efforts were made to notify all invited parties.

invitations? we don't need no steeeenking invitations.
Some people showed up today just to help out and not drive.

How long did it take to figure out no one was a safety steward?
I think Neal has been the only one on the past few Saturday practices.
Unless one of the Meyers' is a safety steward.

Would someone be nice enough to tell us what being a safety steward involves so some of us can decide if we should volunteer for the position?

Here's the deal...

The only loca Safety Steward we have who is not competing at nationals this weekend is Frank. He has been very ill this week (104* fever when he went to the doctor). He put out a call midweek to some other known safety stewards to see if they could come and help out this weekend. Noone was able to positively confirm that they would be able to attend. Since he's not feeling super great yet, he decided to cancel the invite only practice so he could be sure he would be able to be SS for the Sunday points event.

Frank will be there tomorrow. The event will go on as planned.

Normally, the availability of SS's isn't an issue. We have enough to go around, but with Nationals being this weekend and Frank getting sick, it hurt us. (Initially, the Sept event was supposed to be a week later, but FSF had a scheduling conflict and pushed us up a week).

No, unfortunately Brian and Shawn aren't Safety Stewards.

Hmn.... will need to help him i guess

Is it possible for him to give directions to like 20 people and make them do work while he rests?

Not the SS duties. He is responsible (on the official insurance liability paperwork) for ensuring the site is safe for competetors and spectators. If there are other licensed SS's there, he can delegate responsibilities to them.

The requirements to become a Solo Safety Steward are outlined in a appendix in the SOLO Rule Book.

As stated earlier, the become a steward one must attend a class and the work two events as a deputy steward. Then one becomes a full fledged safety steward.

The duties of a safety steward are also in the rule book. They include assuring that the course is safe and within the safety guidlines. Also, the steward must assure that any spewctator areas are in a safe position. They also keep an eye on all aspects of an event to assure that things are as safe as possible. A safety steward cannot have any other work duties.

Ideally, several safety stewards should work an event, with assistants working with the chief safety steward, in a rotation. Working as a safety steward satisfies the work obligation for an event. It would be great to have as many as possible become stewards to spread the workload out.

I hope this helps in answering any questions.

Neal and Katie have done alot of work for the club, and we see just how much we miss what they do by them not being here. We couild help them by becoming safety stewards.

We also hope that they do well in Kansas.

Keep an eye at the SCCA national web site daily to see how our local people do at the nationals.

Unfortunatly I will not be able to attend the event on the 9th, but good luck to all who are there.

See you in Gainesville.
