View Full Version : WTB steering rack
I am looking for a replacment for my leaking power rack.
I assume I could use any 87 rack?
Anyone have a good one FS? I can give a core also.
Anyone know if fixing a leak is possible on these. It appears that one of the seals is leaking out, not bad, but leaking.
Another question: Can I make the car manual? Can I connect the lines together and leave some fluid in it and use it this way? Or is it a real bitch to turn? will it lock up on me?
I have done this my power rack on my RX7 and its not bad, and wonder if it can be done to my car?

I have been driving my K around with the power steering pump disconnected for months, and I have done this before no ill effects. This is my second leaking rack, except mine basically losses all fluid within 3-4hrs and leaks at both boots.
I am thinking I will just replace it with a fast ratio rack from a C/S Package Daytona, apparently you can get these remans at any auto parts store and I doubt they will know the core is not the same.

Oh its not that bad to drive without power assist. Actually it seems easier to drive than my sisters Hyundai Hatch with has a manual rack in it.
Can you explain a little more to me?
You just took the belt off?
I wanted to remove the pump and the lines, and then run them together to allow fluid to move back and forth some, to maybe make it easier to steer.
I just noticed something, if its leaks, it would go empty sometime, and then lock up right? I guess leaving the pump on would be an easy way to keep fluid in it. I lose about 1/8 quart every 500 miles.

well it won't lock up, other wise mine would have a long time ago. but you probably should leave the pump, as a quasi funnel to keep er lubed

I would say that it has to be out of an "L"... those damn cars are annoying because nothing interchanges with the rest of them.

Not for an L. Try CDM (Cophers). I'm sure you can get one at a parts store too. Buyer Beware.

I havent found a good place to rebuild racks anywhere. I have 2 spare R/T ones here waiting for that day. [b][b]

I dont think it will lock up, however manual racks have a diff ratio to make them easier to turn. 4SFRED4 can comment on the turning. He had it like that on the GLH

go to Cophers and pick up a manual rack out of a Omni and lose the P/S pump for good

I have a manual rack for a "L" body but it isn't for sale. You might get lucky at garlits later this year, if not I can have 808 look at the junkyard when he goes this week.

Wouldnt bet on that. I find tons of non a/c cars here. I just never look in L's for many things and especially not manual racks. I can though.

Not recommended, I'd just disconnect the lines let all the fluid pump out, then just seal it. If you leave the fluid in the rack without the pump it's pretty hard to steer.

Hey....why you calling me FRED?
Yes, you can just run a hose from one port on the rack to the other and get rid of the PS lines altogether and it will work fine. The wheel will just be harder to turn :D I didnt try draining the fluid (as suggested above), but that might make it easier to turn.

It may be harder to turn with the fluid but you might still want some in there for its lubrication purposes. Besides a little upper body workout couldn't hurt :)

True dat, long term with no fluid might not be such a hot idea.
