View Full Version : Need some advice on rebuilding my GLH-S
I have a GLH-S that has a blown the engine. I will need new rings and pistons. What is the best rings and pistons for running 20 to 25 psi. The engine is 030 over.
I am also thinking of changing the car to Automatic, does anyone know how to do this and any certain parts that would be needed to handle 300 hp?

http://www.relentlessracing.com/ has rings which will probably be good for your application, although I don't think it really matters too much as long as they are turbo rings.
As for the transmission, your best bet is to find a turbo minivan with a 413. This is probably the beefiest of the stock transmissions for these cars. Or you can send any 413 off a turbo engine to Relentless Performance and have them do a stage II rebuild which is good up to 350hp.
Since you are planning on running over 15psi, do you have your fuel mods planned yet?
I know of Gary's site, He is the one I have gotten my stage 2 cpu and the complete rebuild kit, with a higher volume oil pump from.
Due to the the loss of Gus, Gary has shut down his shop for a while, so I can't pick Garys brain for ideas right now.
As far as the fuel mods, I have a RRFPR on order from Gary, I am not exactly sure what else I would need at this time, I plan on running 15 psi till I can get the engine back together and start on this automatic transplant.
What about axles when swapping this auto in, do they have to be different axles?

Hey Levi.. It's jeff. I thought you vanished!
A lot of people, including myself, use Speed Pro rings.. err.. is it Sealed Power? They work fine, just get the Moly ones for turbos. For pistons, being a 2.2 you dont have much choices. Mahle doesnt make oversize 2.2 ones. So it's either JE Forged pi$tons, or some other brand. Just dont get the hypereutectic.
To convert to auto, you need 1) the trans. 2) shifter assembly. 3) Shift cable and kickdown cable. 4) Flexplate and torque converter. As long as you get an 88+ auto, the axle spline size should be the same. For 20-25 psi i would definatly get it worked a little. Gary has some avail now, or AJ in Long Island. You need the bigger front drum and some valve body work.
Your Rising Rate Reg should be enough for fuel, however with stock injectors at 25psi boost = 80psi FP, you're getting kinda high. I'd put in some +20s maybe.

other brand is usually Venolia

Hey jeff, Long time no hear. Mike said you got your car running, thats great!
I have pulled the engine out o the GLH-S, and going to pull it apart tonight, when I get off work.
Bigger drums and valve body work. What exactly do you mean? Bigger drum brakes? And Valve work, in the transmmison, like shifting valves?
Where can I find a site on this stuff, or is Garys site the best for this info?
Maybe you can come by and laugh at this piece of shit.

I think he means you need a bigger front clutch drum for the auto tranny. The auto tranny has to clutch drums, each has its own clutch packs in them. There is a bigger front drum that you will need to beef it up which has room for an extra clutch pack, but I dunno for sure which cars have the extra drum (probably mini vans).
By valve work he is probably refering to the valve body on the transmission. There are a few ways about modifying this. There is a cheap way which G. Donovan has on his site, or you can throw a shift kit into it (if you can find one, Mopar performance supposedly just discontinued this part), or you can ditch the stock valve body for a full reverse pattern manual valve body.
Wow, thats some good information, I didn't know about. I can already see I am going to need alot of help to make this pipe dream a reality.
Maybe I can offer you guys some cash, to stop and help me get this together. Most of my free time is eaten up by work and my 1 year old son.
I have another friend of mine, who has a 92 shawdow, I think it is, that has a automatic, that I may be able to use, I just am not sure if it will ahndle the HP, and I know Turbo van are almost impossible to find anymore. Maybe my idea is too crazy and I should just stick my 525 back in.
Well let me know, I would love to boost along with everyone.

I think I read some where about using the tranny drums and clutchess out of the 3.0L trannies. Those are plentyfull the junkyard. Best way to learn is rip a tranny apart in the yard.

Yep, the best drum to get is out of a 3.0 auto. Then stuff it full of clutches. I personally dont do transmissions, so i let an expert build mine up bulletproof. Also, if you're gonna stay 2-spd, throw out the 525. At least put in a 520.

Nah put in a 555 or 568 :tiwsted:

Oh yeah and doesn't that have to be the A670 auto tranny from the 3.0L????
I think the 604's are different than the 413, while the 670 is just its 3.0L cousin.

yeah, thats true. Put a 555 in there too if you find one.
The v6 trans must be a 413. The 670s are the OD ones, right? You can tell b/c they have a big electrical box on the front of the case. Those are shit. Stay away. Find a v6 413, the guts are all the same in them. But again, just leave it up to a prof. Have AJ build you one, or i got mine from Dave Grove.
I really want to go for the automatic, I think I can make a real screamer out of my GLH-S. I totally hate the way the shifter rods feel on these cars.
I just want to put in drive and go. The damn clutch on the GLH-S is so stiff, its like driving a old truck, my one calf muscle is twice the size of the other one. :o
Mike really wants my T4 hybrid turbo, maybe I should trade him for another turbo and a automatic setup in my car. What you guys think about that? Mike what you think, sound like a deal?

if its the shifter rods that bug you.. change it to cables.
you can put an auto in and go, but not at 25psi.
Mike, just dont trade the turbo off the CSX, my dad still wants to look at it/buy it. I was in class last night when you called.

Well it that case. Take the "3" gears the Jeff took out of the 5-speed and add it to the A604 so you have an A904, But then you have to put a V8 in front.

Actually it is the 604 that is the 4spd OD computer controlled POS trans. The 413 is numbered 670 for the V6 because the bellhousing is different.

Yip hence the sudden interest in 2.0L swaps. At first gonig to swap in a 'yard 2.2 T or 2.5 then start the research and swapping over a little at a time. One of the biggest parts missing right now is the tranny :( from the 2.0L Does Jessi still have the engine and tranny from the old Omni? It shouldn't be that hard, if all the sensors work on a 2.0L the next big thing will be over coming the redline differences......

Now wait a sec, are you talking NA or Turbo? Because a 2.2 TII computer will have a higher redline than a NA 2.2 computer. What is it like 6200rpm for turbo and 5950 for NA. So if its a NA car just run a MSD with rev limiter, only concern might be that the speed density system won't know how much fuel to use over 5950rpm?
What do 2.0's usually redline at in the neon?

at a slightly higher 7200 rpm :( I believe peak HP was at 6800

MSD idea might work, but the fuel might be a problem unless you are happy with extra injectors or something.

the auto out of the 92 Shadow will work the only problem is the lock up converter but i have the tranny pump, and 4 clutch pack drums to fix that and i'll give you my custom converter and the turbo of CSX 439 no not the turbo that's on #294 i'm selling Jeff

Maybe also get rob maxon off his lazy ass and have him raise the rev limit and maybe change some other things on a T1 ECU

HUH? Just gonna swap in a 2.2T for now, I have to get a Neon Tranny for the 2.0L I am not going to do the mix and match routine. :| When I get all the parts for the 2.0L then the 2.2 comes out. Some other shit has come up and I think the old Omni would be the easiest to get up and running. You wont mind if I drag back with us when we come down? 2.2L are everywhere out here. Which is always a good thing.
