I decided to go on a highway test before my trip to Gainesville. So I decided to drive the turnpike to the Florida Mall. On the way back, all the sudden I check my mirror and there is a huge cloud of smoke about as wide as my car, kinda whitish. As soon as I saw it I glanced at my oil press guage and saw I had no pressure, and pulled over immediately, popped the hood and looked under the car to see what looked like a oil/water mix flowing like a river off the back of the oil pan.

I think the head gasket blew but I have no good answer why. Its a brand new fel pro head gasket, only a few miles on it because I changed it when I changed the cylinder head a few weeks back. I also had used new head bolts and I am 99.9999999999999999999999% sure I torqued them in the right sequence to the correct amount of torque.

Can anyone describe what detonation sounds like to me? I am starting to think that all this time that noise I was hearing was detonation. I guess that driving around town at 55 or below it was mild enough that it didn't do much damage. But maybe at highway speed 70+ with short little 85mph sprints, that it could have been too much for it and blown the gasket. I don't know, just a thought. (also considering that the engine is holding fairly high rpms at highway speeds because of a 3spd non lockup)

I don't have time to fix it myself, so its going to be towed to a shop this time. We'll see what the damage report is then. If its not to much I might just pay them to fix it good. If its a lot or if the crank is bad from the oil press drop, I am gonna say to hell with it. Maybe I'll drop a turbo engine in it, maybe I'll just get a different used car, maybe a Shadow or Neon. Who knows. I guess I'll figure that out if the time comes.

man that sucks bug time, sorry to hear that, explaining detonation online is like trying to explain what music sounds like to a deaf person, maby someone else could but Im not that creative at writing, I'm still sorry about your car, Get a cheap Neon or CSX :D or I guess you could Turbo the old 4D K

I know a guy with a really really fast csx that still has it for sale :D

Ok, sorry, that does suck a big weinie. Just keep telling yourself that it will pay off in the end, all the preppy little engineers that haven't ever touched a car, and you have a vast amount of experience because you have a dodge and will land a killer $$$$ job. Or at least thats what I keep saying......

Detonation is like marbles rolling around in the engine. Gets worse with load and engine rpm. If it gets bad enough you can actually feel the engine power drop off. Guessing and have heard when detonation occurs, roughly 10% of power is lost. Worse case we still got a 81 Aries that needs a tranny. Sell ya cheap :D I can even help with the tranny if you do it when I am down in fL If not I plan on getting a tranny for it either way. At least get it moving under its own power. On the detonation, check the engine temp and ignition advance, also what fuel ur running.

ignition was set by me just two days before this happened, it was at about 14 BTDC. I run 89 octane most of the time.

My car sounded like a little clakity clakity rod knocking or something, but it didn't always happen which is why I thought it might be some sort of detonation. When I took it on the highway it made this noise a lot unless I let off the accelerator completely, or if I hit a sweet spot. I know its not a rod knock though cause I checked the clearances just this weekend.

I guess the only real way to tell is to check the plugs.

leadfootedfool

Check the plugs, and you might want to check your fuel filter also.

What should I be looking for in the fuel filter? If it makes a difference, its brand new, less than 1k miles, fuel pressure was about 12-13lbs, a little low, should have been 14.5lbs, but my A/F always seemed fine.

Actually it won't matter I am paying someone else to look at the car right now, I don't have the time to, have to be in Gainesville tomarrow :(

But I'll check these things when I get it back, if I decide not to have them fix it.

There really isn't anything you can check unless you have a clear one. Point I was getting at was when was the last time it was changed. How old is the fuel pump?? It may be cutting in and out, especially after longer drives. Fuel pressure sounds about right, though I'm not a tbi wiz by any means.

Well the filter was new and the pump is stock from the factory. I have the low pressure (14.5psi) TBI setup. My fuel pressure gauge read 12-13psi all the time. Of course its under the hood so I have never checked it under normal driving conditions.

I am not sure if I have the same pump as the higher pressure TBI's. But if thats the case then I assume the FPR is different between the two and that my pump would probably last longer since it wouldn't have to work as much.

Always cophers special pull days....I'm sure me and j3ff could lend a hand.

We'll see what happens if its bad then I might, if its not bad I won't. I pulled over as soon as I saw the smoke and when I stopped I still had oil coming out which leads me to believe I only had run a few secs without pressure. That may have been enough to do it but I am hoping it didn't. Hell I might just get something else. I am tired of working just to fix a car, would rather work to make it faster.

No matter how you put it I will be out of a car for a while. And if I do build a turbo engine for it I will take a lot longer than I did to do my TBI. I think I learned the hard way that I was trying to finish things too quick. If I do drop another engine into this car, it will be nothing short of perfect before I even think to put it on a hoist and lower it in.

It when you pull all you can for a small fee plus core charges, It's how aquired alot of the parts I had, till my Father in Law cleaned my yard grrrrrrrr but that's in the past who needs 440's and # matching drivetrain parts and rear ends and on and on and on

Some good news about the K. Turns out I stopped quick enough that it didn't do any noticeable damage. The place I decided to send it to just put in a new drain plug and added oil. Then they started it and were suprised as fudge that it was fine. Went straight up to its normal cold 60psi of oil pressure, and was as quiet as normal.

I managed to stop by the place and check the car out. I started it and it was fine. Unfortunately I still have no car because it is Ocoee/Orlando, and now I am at school :(

But anyways my dad is gonna get drive it and get it checked out some more while I am here, and maybe that knocking type detonation sound figured out. I am starting to think it is detonation, it is a loud knocking sort of like 4sfed 4 described. I don't know but I'll find out.

It feels strange sending the car somewhere to get fixed. Oh well.

When I asked about the water they said it was fine :?

Guess I was seeing things.

The place was on the way to school, right by the turnpike, so we stopped to take a look at my car and see what was up. I started it and it sounded fine, and my friend even said it sounded better than he last remembered it before I even spun the bearing.

And the main reason I sent it somewhere was because I was too busy packing to move back to Gainesville to fix it. I just got here today, luckily my buddy Trey drove his Dak down to O-town and helped me move back up.

nah, just adds weight

FearThe4Doors

get the lighter weight oil. I get the 20/50 stuff but set it to the 20 side. Then take 5 pounds out of each tire... that adds up! Just make sure you spin the tire as you take the weight out... you dont want it to come off one side and make things way off balanced.
