All I have to say is about the is the third time I have come in second in ASP but not won jack squat because there are rarely more than 6 people in ASP.
I am also happy to say that when I set aside my concervative cone avoidance practices in my one and only fun run that I got a 47.1XX.
Subies and Miatas had better beware the black wheeled porsche . . . :P

O/C is off course which means you did not go around the course or cones the right way.
Next time you need to PUSH IT HARD. The way you were driving was acceptable for the street, but WAY too concervative for a competive event.
If the tires are not complaining during turns, acceleration and/or braking, then you arn't going fast enough. Unless you push the car hard enough to skid and spin, you are not going to learn what the auto-x can teach you. You must learn how your car loses control to learn how to control it.
Today was a good learning experience for you, but if you want to get under a minute on a course like that you need to drive whatever you got like you stole it.
I don't mean to bust your bubble, but with the exception of the people that did not finish at all, you had the slowest times out of everyone (ie, only 2 out of 106 competitors where slower than you were)
I wish you better luck next time and hope we see you out there in a more aggresive mode.
Holy shit...I placed 4th out of 6 in SM?!?!? I SWEAR I hit a cone on my second run and just fucked up on that last one. Guess I was wrong. :?

And you beat me by almost a whole second.
LogicalRetard trounced me by a whole tenth of a second too.
The TR foci, nissans, hondas and acuras are quite the force to recon with at the auto-xes.

All I can say is Lenny almost got owned by a Focus? HAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA HAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH AHHAHAHAHAHAHAH and got beat by an accord!
I wish I had been able to show up so I could have learned to drive his car and made it look respectable for him.

I am amazed.

Quick question to anyone who could stay for the awards at the end of FSF autox. I had to leave but finished 2nd in novice. Did I miss anything at the end. Just wondering had to make it to the Kravitz Concert as well!! :?

while we are throwing shit around...
I dont think certain 2nd in ASP people should complain about not getting trophies when they cant beat street tire cladded FWD cars with 120whp and some suspension work....
Same goes for 3rd gen RX-7 owners who get pissy because they got beat by a bone stock Crown Victoria and ask to be moved into a class where they can trophy in their first event...
ok...im cool again.

Whatever Shawn. You would have done no better. 2 runs between official 1st and 2nd runs. Greasy kumho's. A finish that the Miata's decided they could pick up 3 seconds on if THEY ran over a cone...
Even the Meyers brothers were tagging that cone on their way through (they were both in their mustangs because the kart was busted -- carb prollems) because they were faster that way.....
I tagged 3 cones and had one of them roll across the finish behind me tripping the finish for the car behind me. FTD ! ;)
All I'm saying is you still would have been slow. I don't even think the vic could have made it through clean if driven perfectly.

Yeah, the TR acura team is certainly throwing conventional auto-x wisdom out the window.
Too bad Mark had to break his shit and go the wrong event or things would have been even more interesting. Then again, with 106 competitors every person that could stay away was doing the rest of us a favor.

Just wait until I get out of these BFG's and get some stickier tires. ;) But this course definately favored the more compact vehicles. That last, very tight portion just before the finish was brutal on anything larger than a Mini.

That 2.5rs Subbie in G Stock is nearly impossible to beat. I haven't seen Neil loose very many, and I should know, I spent most of the 2000 season on his ass, always taking 2nd place to him. He's truly a great driver (him and Will).

well, I was starting to feel pretty bad about my times.
Then I started looking at what everyone else ran.
My best was a 52.119
which beat Tony, Bill, Alan F. and Charles.
I have a power advantage over these guys, except for Tony, but a crappy suspension set up. Tony just has no excuse.
I really need to spend some money on suspension and an alignment.

WRONG, I beat you by almost a whole second with an official time of 51.399
I will agree with you that now that I have some tires that grip and most of my RPM range available I mostly have my driving to blame for not beating 80% to 90% of the competition.

Well, in a week in a half we will know who can accelerate in a straight line for a quarter of a mile faster too.

I've been saying this for months.... :)
All that power. Such a great suspension (insert rear shock excuse), such great tires (insert excuse about not being able to warm up the fronts -- WHICH I warned you about) and a 1000lb advantage. That's half a ton....

I don't think I'll be able to run, after yesterday my clutch started to not disengage fully for a while. might have been heat related but I'm pretty sure the throw out bearing is shot. I've got around 60k miles on this clutch half of that after the new motor went in.

BISH!!! It's a XXL... get it right. And, it's not my fault that porsche guy chooses me as his target. He's the one goading me to have a dinner bet over autox times. I declined because there's no earthly reason his car should not be beating mine (and frankly, I don't like gambling to begin with.) Beyond that, he's the one bitching about getting 2nd place and not getting a trophy.

Thats the reason I put off my tranny and engine work to buy my racing wheels instead. Though the last auto-x was not my greatest the new rubber made a very noticible difference.
Once I add a front strut brace and a fresh set of sport or adjustable rear shocks I will practically be done with my suspension mods (new bushings will eventually be a necessity).
While I can live with 300 HP at the rear wheels and the oil leaks, I am anxious to change my ring and pinion since that would really help my acceleration at the slower auto-x speeds.
At least at this stage of mods I feel much less limited by the car and can focus more on the whole driving side of the equation.

I never said i could beat you or anyone else.
Why not drive in STS if you dont have race tires? Brian in the Cavalier has been doing it for a year...and routinely schools a lot of "more prepped" cars in STS.
Let me just ask something...
is it more fun for you to win your class against novices or is it more fun to come in 3rd against good drivers with cars prepped more than yours?
Should you only goto events that you think you can win at? Damn, i guess i better stop going to ANY event in Florida, because Elliot is going to show up and beat me.

Even though we arn't all coming in first in our respective classes I think its quite a statement about our little social club how well us TR members do compared to the majority of the contestants at each event.
We all may not have the best equipment and skills but concidering how well we do at each event it is certain that we are doing something right.
When you concider all the different things we can be doing to modify our vehicles the auto-xes are certainly helpful in allowing us to determine what kind of stuff we should be doing to our cars.
I think the fact that we all want to dominate at the auto-x is just a healthy outlet for our agressive and competitive urges.

(no offense taken and nothing against you) I like to compete in a competitive class. what i dont like is no matter how well i drive not being able to compete on a mechanical level. that's all my favorite races that i have had have been ones that i have lost but came down to the wire (except 1 time in palm bay i won by less than one onehundredth of a second. that was fun) i love to compete and try to win from a disadvantage. i just dont like not being able to compete because others in my class "earn" more $$$$$ :verysad: thats all jess for example next month although i could run my stock class im gonna jump all the way to street mod just to race some ppl i consider to be my competition. course im gonna give ol nessie a break for this one and race my 944 for the first time lol look out leonard/taylor/mark/alan/crizeg and all you other TR street modders.

Even within classes, some cars have advantages and disadvantages due to the design of the car. Look at F-Stock for example. Mustangs (V8 including cobra), Camaro's (V8's excluding SS), Crown Victoria's. Who has the advantage? Not the Crown Vic. The others are close enough that driver makes a huge difference.
944's (and all other sports car derived vehicles) are not elegible for SM.
Beware SM -- the lean maching is about to compete on the level... http://www.maximummotorsports.com/mmcopkg.html

well, if I find the right person willing to make the right deal, I will be swapping chassis' for a lighter honda. I want to be much closer to the minimum weight for SM.
In the process of all the swapping that will have to take place I am going to rebuild my motor, I don't think it will all be done by the next autox, so if anyone would be interested in a codriver let me know.

Just my 2 second rant...but their ideas of what is "sports car based" are kinda silly... A supra can run but not a 944 ? Silly rules.

You talking about tony and leonard?
It doesn't matter how many times they get beat, they will still have ego issues, hell Lenny had to buy an XXXL helmet just so he could squeeze his fat head into it.
talking about anyone who pisses and moans all the time and has an excuse EVERYTIME. yea, have a legitimate one from time to time, but when you have one everytime, shit gets OLD.
if i go out there and get beat by whoever, then i got beat at driving, the car doesnt really mean that much anymore in autocrossing, yes it helps but when i went to palm bay last time and watched a instructor drive a bone stock 90-93 escort GT around the track faster then 85% of the people there shows me the car doesnt really mean dick, you just have to get use to the car you drive
and if you think your going to do something that is going to put you in a higher class, then save up and do it all at the same time so you can be more competitive.
I.E. Joe putting on only a strut bar to knock him out of stock and into STS. Id save up and buy all the parts for STS at one time and then put it on. I dont have that choice being in SM, but if I had a somewhat stock car that is what "I" would do.

I have to somewhat disagree on it being all driver, Danny shields was only able to run a 51?? in Joes car and I ran a 52??? and I KNOW I am nowhere near the driver Danny is.

However he did run a 49 in Alan's Focus. Looks like there is a vast difference between Joe's Firesquacks and Alan's Falkens.
What is the minimum weight for SM? Since Craig has a CRX, isn't he going to have to run in SM2 since his car is a 2-seater?

I also saw Danny take that silver 911 carrera for a spin last week and was not able to better the novice owner's time, but then again the novice owner is a good driver.

How many runs did Danny get in the 911? Was he able to learn the limits of the car wit just one or two runs?
I have been involved in autocrossing for over twenty years.
I can tell you that the most important element of a car is the driver.
Yes, Danny Shields has driven a couple of my cars. No, Danny has never beaten my times. Does this make me a better driver than Danny? NO!!!! Without a doubt, Danny is a far better driver than I will ever be. The difference is I drive Mod cars (formula fords) and Danny drives street legal cars. Given enough seat time in one of my cars Danny would surely wax my behind.
Years ago, Howard Duncan was my codriver. Howard is an incredibly talented driver. I seldom beat Howard in my own car. But, having him drive my car, and sharing information, did dramatically improve my driving. I had the enjoyment of seeing my car set the fastest time of the day with Howard driiving, and then trying to catch him.

Funny thing that you ask. I started autocrossing in 1980 in a 74 260Z. In 84 I built a 1600 Solo vee. Howard, his wife Linda, and I ran it in 85, and took it to Salina that same year. Howard finished 6th, and I believe he was the higest finishing vee that year in DM. So I have had seat time in a Solo vee beast.
In 1986 I bought a Lola T342 (1600). The Duncans and I ran the car together until 1990, when Howard accepted the job as Solo Manager at the SCCA national office. This car has had a pile of money thrown at it. It has dual side draft webers, 11:1 pistons, mild cam, ported and polished heads, polished rods, a 5 pound flywheel, Tilton clutch and throw out bearing, torsen posi, and two sets of wide wheels, among other expensive items. I have been running his car in BM.
Five years ago I bought another T342, for $2,000. I brought it home in a basket. I have another $1,000 in rebuilding the car. It is a legal club ford, and runs in CM. It is almost as fast as the BM car.
For those who have seen these cars at FSF, the red one is the BM car, and the blue one runs in CM. I will be at the next FSF event.
My point of the driver being the most important element of the car is as follows.
In 1989, Howard was not able to compete at the Solo Nationals in BM. He entered the car in AM. At the time this car was not a front running BM car.
At the end of the first day of competition against 4 AM national champions in AM, Howard had this car in third place out of 20 cars. For a time, he had the fastest time of the course, and had the third fastest time on that course out of 700 drivers. The course for the second day was a horse power course, but Howard still came home with a trophy, 6th place, in a car that was not considered to be competitive in AM.
See ya in a couple of weeks.

I'm still wondering if I won a trophy....haha. If I did, I'll be at the Sept. 8th Auto-X, and I'll be more than happy to pick it up....hehe.

I think the new rule is that if you are not there after the auto-x (or you have not arranged to have someone pick it up for you) no trophy for you.

Actually, it's an old rule. If you don't stick around to collect your trophy, then it is assumed that you do not want it and it is recycled back into the trophy supply box. Typically, we only try to make exceptions to that only if you have to leave for an emergency reason and you talk to someone on the event staff first.

I told Neil that I had to leave early, and he ok'd it, but I didn't know that I was going to win a trophy at the time I left, so does that mean I can pick it up at the next event?

I guess you will have to see if your connections allow you to get it after the fact.
