I am planning on finally attending and racing in an Auto-X. I was wondering how much this will be both for non-SCCA member and members, how much for spectaters, and how about people riding. I am thinking about joining that day, I heard there was a deal if you join on race day, does anybody know how much? Also, who will be attending? I have Falken Azenises and a set of Victoracers, I'm not sure on which to use....what would you guys suggest...I believe the Victo's need to be warmed up. Thanks a bunch!

$0 to spectate
$0 to ride
$30 to drive non-member
$20 to drive scca member

and as far as the tires go if you havent ever done this before you may want to use the falkens as they are more predictable and forgiving however if you have done this a time or two use the kuhmo's they own falkens but get owned by hoosiers.

Ya know the hoosiers aren't that much better than the cum hoes. They just wear out faster. If I were you I would run the Azenis to get used to Autocrossing, then move up. Also, there is no deal on your first event, you get a card and yuor 4th event is free.

I would definitely opt for the Falken's in your case. (I'm assuming that you've never autoxed before). Run in novice and see how you fare. Depending what class you decide to eventually run in, you may or may not be able to run the VR's. (STS/STX -- street tires only).

Even then, I'd stick with the street compound until you are ready to move to R compounds. I race in SM ( Street Modified) and didn't make the move to R compounds until I was beating all the other SM folks on street tires. (Normally, it's like this... 1-4 on R compounds, 5-8 on street tires.). But, when I made the move to R compounds, I was more ready as a driver. Of course, the extra grip is exacerbating the issues I have with very 'soft' stock springs, but I'll get that fixed in time. Hopefully, my experience will give you some insight into what you want to do.

Alright, who's going to let me ride with them :) Or maybe one of you guys can ride with me and give me pointers. When I start to run the R's, how could I warm them up? Also, it says that Saturday's are by invitation only.....who's invited :).....is it free to come and watch? I was trying to ge the class specifications on the SCCA website, but it seems that the Solo2 stuff is totally different. The guy I bought my car from used to race SSB Club Racing. So, Idon't know what it would be after I go into the novice class. Also, I have no idea, just like half these engine codes :D, what all those initials stand for, could somebody help me out? Thanks again for all your help.

Anyway, you can classify your car here...

Or you can list your mods and someone can help.

I think for safety reasons tire warming is not allowed. But I am sure there are ways around it.

Here is how you get invited on Saturday...

And you can ride with me. My name is Jeremy and I ride in a black Civic STS #262.

You're more than welcome to ride with me if you like. Novices aren't permitted to have passengers with the exception of driving instructors (don't blame us, it's a requirement of the event liability insurance).

I don't think anyone would have issue with you coming out Saturday to watch. In fact, it may be a good experience to watch people run and perhaps get some ride-alongs to learn more.

I am also willing to provide a ride along during the fun runs if there are any.

I usually want to remain solo during the runs that count, though I did make an exception for Joe since he technically didn't have a vehicle to drive last time.

you can ride with the body rollin bastard if you wanna see what a stock ls can do with mush springs and over bound shocks lol it does well though i can give you a few pointers and talk you through a run if you want. if you do want to let me know but not on 4th run. :D

oh yeah and by the way as far as class is concerned if you stay on falkens you could still run sts prolly b-cuz you are allowed alot of mods without bumping class but the problem with sts is that you will end up racing against elliot harvey and a bunch of other really good drivers i.e. mark and jean kinser/dana. just to name a couple. if you post exactly what is done to the car then we can prolly figure out what class you would be in. :)

To answer all our questions...
and to ask some of my own...

The fee part has been covered. You can read up on it further if you want.

I very much recommend coming on Saturday to watch and ride along. NO-ONE will care if you ride on Saturday, and it is just practice. You will get a great opportunity to see a variety of driving lines in each car, as each driver will be trying new things.
On race day however, you will be unlikely to get a ride, since weight costs time and time is points. Fun runs are after the event and you could ride then with almost anyone again, but this is after the whole 'event' event is done.

As Leonard said, you cannot have passengers unless they are event officials who are serving as driving instructors. On Sunday, you cannot ride with anyone until you have made your first run... basically to keep you from getting acquainted to the course before you drive it (keeps it fair).

I'd be glad to let you ride with me on nearly every run on Saturday. You will get the chance to meet the event staff and learn a few things about autoX.

Victoracers DO NOT need to be warmed prior to running (not really). Kumho made them to be an autocross tire (and not necessarily a road race tire) and thus they have their rated traction at ambient temperature. They WILL get a little stickier with some heat, but nothing you'd gain from as a novice.

Definitely wear the Azenis the first event at least, as you will be in Novice class street tire. There is a different class for novices on R compound tires, and no one is in it so you will have no fun.

My questions:
Why do you already have Azenis and Victoracers? Do you do some sort of racing already?

Maybe I missed it, but... What are you driving, and what are the modifications thus far?

Good luck and I look forward to seeing you then!

Cool, thanks for all the offers to let me ride....what cotagories are all of you guys in? Are any of you guys driving instructors, if so you are welcome to ride and give me as many pointers as humanly possible :D. I will most likely be there on Saturday to check out what's going on....and maybe bum a couple rides...:). How different is the track from day to day, or event to event? How much preparration time is allotted (time to walk course and what not)? That sucks that no one can ride with me, I told my friend he could already, haha, oh well. My name is Bart, to all of you that don't know, which is basically everyone posting here, haha. I drive a black 1993 Nissan Sentra SE-R. I beleive, from looking at that site, that I would be in Street Modified, due to one little thing....maybe. My car has a B&M short shifter, Eibach ERS/Koni Red's, JWT ecu, K&N filter, straight pipe from after-cat-resonator back, balanced and blueprinted, Nismo radiator, and little things here and there. I have the Azenises because they are just awesome tires for drag/auto-x and they were cheap, and I have the Victoracers cause i bought the car from Mike Schultz, he raced the car since it was new in SCCA SSB Club Racing, he gave me the car, extra motor, parts, and 16 sets of wheels and tires (1-Worn BFG R-1's, 1-worn Victo's, 1-Good Victo's, 1-worn Yoko slicks), so I picked up a pretty good deal, it also has a bolt-in 4pt. roll-cage, but I took it out for right now. Also, do they allow any camber mods? Alright, thanks again for all the invites, and soory this was soo long!

LogicalRetard
07-27-2002, 12:52 AM
Oh yeah, I forgot to ask....if I was to swap in the DE-T motor, I would be in Street Mod, right? Also, R-compound tires are legal in normal Street Mod, or do they separate? Thanks!

Several of us on TR serve as driving instructors from time to time. I've done it in a pinch, but kind of prefer not to as there are far better drivers who can be instructors.

As far as your car, you 'should' be in SM. The only thing I can't remember 100% is the ECU, and I'm on vacation and don't have the rulebook handy. I' also assumng your balanced/bluprinted block is of nissan origin.

As long as the block is from the same manufacture as the car, and within the displacement limits, it's good for street mod.

It's a VERY open class. It also makes it quite expensive to be competative. Of course it sounds like your car is already finished.

Well if I end up making it out to the Auto-x instead of the Ford Track day...I may make the plunge, join the SCCA, and finally put myself into SM. I'll just make sure to bring the anal lube...I'm sure to get my ass reamed by the competition in the Slocus. ;)

Alan,

Your slocus has the capability of pwning... you've got the suspension work done. All you need is some sticky tires and you're set.

SCCA provides FREE loaner helmets. Once you know your size, www.racerwholesale.com is a good place to pick up helmets, as is Ebay.

You will probably find the best price on a new snell rated helmet at

http://denniskirk.com/powervendor/lists/partfeaturestypes.asp?serverid=nlStreet&Type=01&Su bType=helmets

I got my Bieffe helmet from them for about $20 cheaper than you could get it in town even after paying shipping.

Just make sure you get a snell rated hemet since that is required by the SCCA.

As far as special shoes and gloves go, here are my thoughts.

If your pedal space is tight and regular shoes are a bit too clunky for you to properly operate your pedals then a pair of driving shoes make sense.

I really don't understand why you may want gloves though. Gloves make sense when you are on a motorcycle or you need a flame retardant suit and gloves for serious racing, but when it comes to gripping and slipping your steering wheel at a Solo II event, skin on leather (or rubber) is the best way to go. Gloves are to precision driving as condoms are to great sex IMHO.

Ive lost my grip a few times and i think gloves would be something to consider, but certainly not for your first time out. Just go out, and have fun.

Where to get a helmet?

I bought a HJC AC-10 stinger helmet for $111.50. It has a M2000 Snell rating.

Dennis Kirk has this helmet listed for $289.00 part # 33-8612.

This is a new, in the box, with bag, helmet.

I bought it on ebay on July 17, .2002.

Other auctions on ebay have a starting bid of $139.00 for the same helmet. This is still not a bad price for a $289.00 helmet.

Ebay has helmets other than HJC. Do a search for the brand you want.

Good luck.

I love this helmet. I used it for the first time last weekend at Savannah.

The ECU is not a limiting factor in your case. It is allowed in SM. As is your mention of an engine swap.

Jesse has served as Novice instructor before (but that was once when there was only like 7 novices) and I have been helpful on occassion as a driving instructor (don't listen to Leonard, he spins everytime I ride with him, but is always faster as a result!)

Leonard
07-29-2002, 08:38 PM
Shawn,

Anytime you ride with me, it IS my slowest run due to the spin, BUT, my next run is always faster than any previous runs.

You are officially mr. bad karma good karma in my book...

I have confirmation that I am not shitting you about the torque band SUCKING in your cobra. Jesse does know what he's talking about but he like that kind of thing.

I heard Neal had the same complaint as me! Too high of a torque band, and when it comes in it isn't really controllable. See I'm not all fubar.
And the whole thing about your clutch engaging at different RPM, blah blah... that's called slipping. Once you get your new clutch and tranny, it will stop.

You just wait. You just wait. I'll be driving in AS later this year, so you just wait.

Why am I talking shit in this thread? I dunno, there isn't enough shit being slung in the autoX forum right now.

I can't wait to help you find the lines on the course so you can learn to go fast.

Shawn, if you revved over 4000 rpm, you would have found the powercurve. There is plenty of torque in that engine. Just cant short shift the sucker. Anyway, if Lenny lets me drive it again, Shawn's getting in the back seat.

Gotta love that Ford VTEC powerband the cobra has! I got no problem revving an engine... as long as it makes power a little more linearly. If you recall I tached out the corvette (much to the dismay of the owner who had never done it before). In all due respect I think I handled the Corvette on street tires just fine, so the "high powered car" argument is nil. And are you trying to tell me a Cobra is a high powered car? In '03, yes. Yours needs a little work.
I suspect you'll wanna start poking at what I've driven, but recall I never called either of the high powered.

And Jesse is better off spinning your car than you are. At least he'll remember to clutch and brake, instead of frying your clutch rolling backrwards at 20mph in FIRST GEAR.

we'll just leave it at that.

Jesse you're an ass. :P
Does the dyno sheet show the time it takes to cover those RPM? You know as well as I do that once the RPMs are above 4000 it revs alot faster than from 2000-4000.
I am noting that it covers the three grand from 4000-7000 alot faster than it covers the two grand from 2000-4000.
Plot that graph over time at WOT and the power increase is notable.

Leonard, you said so yourself. You're the one who warned me of it. I don't like it. I consider it annoying and I would not care to become accustomed to it.
I concede that the VTEC reference is invalid. But thank you for pointing that out and making me think about what I was actually saying.

Shawn,

In my car, if you shift near redline, you drop to about 5000 rpms's. (WELL WITHIN THE POWERBAND).

So, if you'd learn to driver properly, rather than expecting the car to carry your lack of ability, you'd be fine.

Hah, early shifting makes me almost not realize its there. Then again it sucks bad for auto-x. Do the math for 8 MPH per 1,000 RPM in first and you can see how it denies me some premium ratios and powerband.

Just think of it as me sandbagging my capabilities. Yer gonna need those mods to keep a head of me once I fix my shit.
