 Alright here goes...I'm interested in doing Auto-xing (when I'm 16 of course)..and have a few questions..keep in mind I've been to auto-x's before....Miata club and Porsche club ones.
I have a '97 GSR..would that be a good car to auto-x?
What kind of cars would be in my class?(I have i/h/e, ecu, ITR pistons and cams, cam gears, AEM pulleys, Neuspeed springs, etc.)
Should I replace my shocks? (they're the stock ones w/ 85k miles on them)
What would be a cheap wheel/tire combo for my car? (I'd only be 16 at the time of buying the wheels/tires lol)
Any advice on anything I could do currently to get my driving skills up?
When are some events so I could come out and watch and possibly videotape?
Anyone willing to maybe take me for a lap around and tell me some of the finer points?(ridden w/ some guys w/ miatas before..pretty exciting)
Alright I think thats basically it? Drag racing is/should be fun but I like road racing (FORMULA 1!)......thanks in advance for the help!!
-Matt

well, id use ure stock 15s for the autoX and run the Azenis, its a very good budget tire for auto X. as far as class, i believe as soon as you change your springs you go into SM, correct me if im wrong anyone.

Struts is also a good buy, if your on a budget go with some adjustable KYBs, or if you want to spend a little more, go with the konis, they have a little better dampening adjustability.

for driving ideas, just watch the fast people run and watch the line they take, u can video tape all you want.

im about 90% on going to saturdays event and for sure going to sundays, if you see me out there in my accord, let me know and i can take u around for a run during my session. i prefer a rider anyway, seems like i get better weight transfer.

you're wrong.
with only different springs, you would move into street touring.

sadly, you have much more. the pistons will put you in street mod. you're relatively close to being in street prepared. . . but since the pistons were not an applicable option on your car, you're in SM. sorry.

here is an entire list of car classes but i dont thing that you are in a stock class because of your suspension mods. i drive a bone stock '94 integra ls and compete in "g-stock" http://moutons.org/sccasolo/Lists/2002/stockc.html

You would definately be in SM due to the pistons. However your first three events you can run Novice unless you trophy.

As far as cars in SM, Frank with the auto supra, Leonard with the mustang cobra are some of the faster cars at the scca events, however me in my 95 teg, mark in his accord and Taylor in his accord are all in SM as well and quickly catching up to the faster guys.

SM is definite. As far as class rules for SM go, it's something like this:

Suspension: Unlimited so long as the original mounting locations for suspension components are used. (so no K member/aftermarked arms for me... :( -- unless I go to CSP)

Engine: Unlimited so long as the block is from the same manufacturer as your car. ( I 'could' drop in a 429 cobrajet if I wanted and still be legal). There are also some displacement rules. (I don't have my rulebook handy, but its something like this..
rotary: 1.5L
Forced induction:
OHC 3.0L
Pushrod 4.0L
Normaly Aspirated 6L

True Sports Cars are not permitted in SM. (Porsche, Ferrari, Vette's). I think it's gotta come originally equipped w/ 4 seats as well.

There's a couple more minor things, but that's really about it. Also, for over displaced vehicles (say a 3.5L OHC w/ Turbo) there is SM2. But, it also allows 2 seaters. HIGH power vechicles vs miata's... I like it.

It's a tough class and pretty expensive to be competative in. I'm running a totaly stock suspension plus subframes and only have some VERY simple bolt ons (pullleys, MAF, timing adjuster)

I'm getting prepped to do bushings all around as well as coil-overs all around, so I should be picking up some lower times very soon. :)
