I have an idea for all of auto-xers.
We can rent out the st pete all state center practice lot once a month.
We need at least 10 people not over 20 people for this plan.
Initial cost will be $100>(insurance, cones etc) + around $15 each event.
We can build our own cource + we can have tons of run from early morning to sunset + we have time to change parts and setting.
What do you guys think? it's like a $250 auto-x ticket

Since there is a lot of auto-x in the area here is my suggestion for a fun alternative for the course that is also something that I think a lot of drifters would be interested in.
We should set up a large skidpad circle if the practice lot size and pavement is suitable.
It would be easy to time, and if someone didn't care for their lateral G numbers they can just use the big circle as a big drift track.
Its been a while since I have heard of there being any skidpad competitions anywhere. Has anyone ever been to one or heard about one?

What is this site? I'm not familiar with it...

Sounds like the first people to do it would get nailed with all the costs of purchasing equipment....
and what about timing equipment???

I'm down for trying to help get some ideas worked out.

If skidpad is a viable option very little would be required. You could chalk out the skidpad circle and if someone could provide a laptop and an IR diode emmitter and reciever with a basic circuit to allow it to communicate to the serial port on the laptop for a timing system thats all you would need to be in business.

I would like to drift at the skidpad, but i don't know if they let us drift it. I was thinking using the oval track in sunshine, but the date didn't much, the schedule is pretty packed. and if you drive the ovaltrack they require the roll cage on the car.
MinGreyCobra:
it's on us19 in st pete. it's a police training cource.
only people who paid initial cost have right to go to events. it's not like a regular auto-x. people who like auto-x get together and share the cost then rent out the track or skid pad to improve yout driving skill.
400HP930:
I have a small laptop. how much are IR diode emmitter and reciever cost?
Do you think we should check time? If we share $ for timing equipment, I I think we can afford for it. but initial cost will raise. What about if we make 2 or 3people for videotaping instead of timing. it'S not accurated but you can see how fast and how you're driving. or we can buy 2 stop watches.

Material costs to put together a diode based light gate system would be not much more than $100 bucks if that much. My EE skills are pretty shot so I were to build it I would need to do some brushing up on builing a diode IR detector and logic circuit. In addition to the laptop a power source would be required since the equipment would need to operate for hours. If there is an outlet stragically located near the lot somewhere you could just use an extention cord. If not then batteries or a generator would be required.
That would be the hard part since I could easily slap together a VB program for you to capture the times and record them to a DB.
excellent idea. i'd definitely love to get in on that.

To be honest, the hardest part of pulling something like this off is paying for the legal services to develop a waiver and the administrative body that the insurance companies will require to insure an event such as this.

The CFR SCCA equipment can be rented to much less that buying/making stuff would be. Cones, timing stuff, etc...
Talk to Frank this weekend at hte autoX.
I'm not interested though... I have enough events to go to this season.
And no Leonard this is not a cop out, I am actually competing divisionally and maybe at nationals this year... maybe (not like I'll finish anywhere but LAST, but hey! it's a start)

400HP930:
I'll talk to insurance company and SPC someday. as you mentioned, those things are the hardest part. We can figure out something.
138MustangGT:
I appreciate if you can help us for equipment. I'll talk to you on Sun at FSF.

Frank won't be there this weekend. He'll be at the CART races in Cleveland... lucky guy's got pit passes.

haha! I sold the Talon. I would never have had time to fix it. So you are off the hook for now.
I am now officially Jesse's tire-warmer (can also be called a codriver, but I can't drive so...).
I will hopefully (if all goes as planned) be competing in AS next season. That would be in a C4 vette. I've still got considerable research to do and I won't be buying it until LATE November or December. This time I'm doing research and attempting to test drive cars first.
I know the talon would have done well, but I was sick of having it parked a mile from my home... NOT being able to move it. So I sold it breaking even on the price of the car and the cost of registration.

Hey Shawn, why don't you mod the C4 into ASP so I can have more company in my class.
Once we have our projects where we want them it would be nice to directly compete with each other. Its usually lonely in ASP.

I still say you shouldn't be in ASP.... Boost Controller <> ASP. Regardless of where it's set at. :P Plus, all the other mods you've been talking about may well bump you as well. *SP is still fairly restrictive.
yeah.. boostcontrollers suck in that way.. mine put me into SM.. a stock WRX with a boost controller set at stock boost.. and I had to go into SM.

Ahhhh, you might not be in ASP afterall... and besides! C4 vettes are in BSP and the C5 is in ASP.

Actually the All State Campus is currently used by the local Miata club. They hold events there about once every two months. I've raced out there. Its a decent facility, but not a lot of room. Check out www.sunriders.com for more info.
Sunriders might rent out there gear as well. But I would think you'd have a hard time budgeting time to use the course. If sunriders isn't using the track, then the college is. Its where they do police driving excercises. A good section of the course is made for "wet" driving training. And is pretty slick even if its dry.....so that takes out a good part of the track.

Hey, I'll take whatever class that I belong in.
I certainly can't do any worse than I currently do in ASP.
If someone wants to look up where I should be with the 87 930 and the following mods, please do.
Turbo Upgrades (Non-Stock Turbo and Boost Control)
Engine Upgrades (F&N Filter, Non-Stock Muffler, Non-Stock Cams)
Transmission Mods (Non-Stock Ring and Pinion)
Suspension (Non-Stock Rims and Tire Sizes)
Thanks.

Actually, ALL Porsches are excluded from Street Mod... Youre in SM2, or possibly one of the prepared classes, although im not sure. SM2 would be slower anyway, due to tire choices.

hey taka im in man if you can't and/or dont want to try to get it going by yourself then let me know i would be more than happy to help with anything I can. it is nice to see someone actually TRYING to get something organized. i dont have a car to drift but got a car to run regardless of drift and if nothing else i can just slap a set of million mile mom and pop all weather radials on the back of the teg and induce oversteer
