Default Hardcore drag racers....spool on the street..

Been debating this the past 3 days. My detroit locker weighs 25lbs and a moser spool weighs 9.5lbs. Been debating on putting one it and see if I pick up and ET/mph. Anybody have first hand experience with this? How is it on the street? Keep in mind I have skinnies, no front sway bar, 90/10's, solid bushings, and locker so it can't get any worse. lol. Thanks.

You wil regret it if you put any amount of miles on your car. If your locker is working properly, then you would gain anything IMO but alot more harshness

I have used a spool in my car for years and have no problems..... The only other thing thats anoying is if you try to drive around on hard tires the damn thing will chirp all the time when going around corners, I have always run them with DR's or other soft tires.....

ran spool years ago, no problem. As stated above hard tires it chirps going around corners and in tight spots but with softer tires you do not even notice it. I would make sure youhave aftermarket axles though, it is harder on them as there is no give now at all.

if your using stock axles then I would paint a white line from the spline to the flange to see how its twisting. On Dana 60 axles we would get 1 full twist before we would replace them. We checked maybe once a year.

I ran one for a year or so in my semi-DD (drove it unless it was busted) and didn't mind it. It could get a little scary in the rain.

My first impression of the spool was how resistant it was to turning, which sounds pretty obvious, but it kinda surprised me how you'd turn the wheel and just feel the front tires sorta plow straight ahead instead of follow the direction they'd be pointed in.

But the spool on the street wasn't all that bad.

Thanks guys. I have 31 spline mosers now and I run the old nitto 555r's. Softer than a regular radial but nothing like a MT DR.

Would I have to reset the back lash? I mean if I leave the pinion gear alone and just swap the ring gear to the spool would that be ok?

You won't need to mess with the pinion, but you will need to check the backlash when you install the spool because it probably will change a little..... I would just check the backlash before you pull it apart and get it the same when you reassemble with the spool.....

I like the spool on the street, makes for a big swaybar for the rear. You just have to use your head in the rain. Soft tires do not last long.
