I would definitely take it all the way down and prime/paint. Don't paint over the rust unless you want it to bubble up under the paint and cause more problems in the future.

Hows is the paint on the hood? Its always easier to just scuff and shoot it, surface rust can be easily sanded down with a DA. But make sure to use a sealer or a decent 2k primer.

ospho, rust inhibitor, or take it down past the rust if you dont want to use those, shoot it with a good high build primer and block it down so there wont be any dimples or low spots.

tanks guys. what i did was sanded it down to the metal and sanded off the rust wherever it was present. i also made sure i did it as level as possible as im using a circular sander and not a belt sander or anything like that. i am also keeping the entire car in the garage to stop any more rust from forming. im new to painting. i mostly just build cars then take them to macco =D but my friend wanted this done right. i also have a sand blaster but im too lazy to bust it out and i dont want to get sand all over my garage. lol. ANY input on making this car look great is appreciated. so please feel free to shoot me as many tips as possible and now without further adue. the pictures lol.

yeah you can just get a can of rust inhibitor spray, the one that i am thinking of says that it turns rust into primer on the label, i will get the brand when i go back to my shop tomorrow.

sanding to panels bare metal... :nono:
you should only take an area to bare metal if a metal repair is necessary. in the case of surace rust you should only take a scuff on it and hit it with a good sealer primer. if the meta has pitting from the rust, then take the immediate area to bare metal and feather out the paint around it. bare metal is best coated with self etching primer, but make sure to clean the meta with acetone or something similar to remove any oils or contaminents from the metal. wouldn't hurt to lay a coat of sealer primer over it. this is an area where alot of people screw up. not only is it very time consuming and pointless to take a panel to bare metal, it is VERY difficult to get good adhesion without proper prep and equipment, and most people just are't willing to put the time and effort into it. plus factory paint and primer is applied in about the best case scenario so it best left as a bsae to work from if possible

Shit. i already sanded down most of the hood already >.< but for the rest of the car should i just sand the old clear coat off then and primer over the old paint?

for the rest of the car I would reccomend just scuffing it with 220-320 then go back over it with some 400-600 just to smooth it out. mostly just make sure you knock the shine off of it. this will allow better adhesion or the least amount of work. also doing this will allow you to just be able to spray your base coat right over it, unless you are doing a major color change and need the primer to act as a background to help cover the old color. if you will need to prime over the old paint, you can prime over the 220-320 and just scuff the primer with the 400-600. the primer is thicker and will fill the 320 sandscratch that basecoat would still show. for the best result scuff with the 600 as your final and basecoat over that. the scratches will be fine enough to be filled by your base then
oh and BTW yes I am a bodyman, not some random guy talking out his ass lol

lol i figured you would be someone that has some experience in the field.
The clear coat is pretty fuckered so it shouldn't take much to get the rest of it off. im not sure what color he wants to go with just yet. probably white or purple. So if he ends up going with white i need to get a really light primer, correct? then seal the primer, base then clear?

when going dark to light, yes it is good to go with a light primer (light gray or buff) and when going light to dark use a darker primer (dark gray, black, dark red). this way you won't have to use as much base material to cover to old color. it will also affect the final tone of the color compared to the amount of coats used. but sounds like you're on the right track, and I'm sure oldschool98 can also help guide you down the right path and show you some things. hell he probably knows a couple things I don't haha
