I bet you guys/gals will answer this before Moparchat so here it goes.

I need a oil pressure guage and am looking at a 2 1/16 autometer but I am not sure whether I should go electrical or mechanical. Which should I go with and why?

I know I know! You are probably wondering why the hell I want a aftermarket guage in my almost stock naturally aspirated k-car. Simply put its because I spun a bearing and the dummy light came on after the fact so I no longer trust it :(

Oh yeah I need to get a pic of that spun bearing. Its pretty nasty paper thin at the edges and not much thicker at the middle yet I still managed to put 10-15 miles on the engine some of which was at 70mph trying to get to the next exit on I-75 to turn around.

I would go for a mechanical one. For oil its not hard to plumb and nothings dangerous about it.. so might as well get the accuracy of a mechanical one. Less things to go wrong (electrical sender). Theyre pretty cheap too.

Oh and I dont think youre nuts for putting one on your car... its not like youre doing it so people will see it and go Wow! Hes got some kind of aftermarket gauge! He must go like 185 MPH with that car when he out runs cops after street racing with Vipers on NAWS.. LOL.. us dodge people will go cool.. that kids got smarts and cares about his car. Oil pressure gauge is one of the most vital! I dont blame you for wanting one after the idiot light let you down!

Mechanical all the way! Not only will you be able to accurately see the oil preassure but you will also be able to tell what kind of shape your bearings are in and see exactly when if ever you are using oil. Every one of my cars has Oil/H2O/Volt the first two are always mechanical where as well If I need to explain the volt gauge then Ill just install the gauge(s) for you.

I think having a Dodge should be a clear sign of above average IQ :D

You would be suuprised at how many ID10Ts own Mopars :nono:

Bob (rb70383) will more than likely give you the same response as I did. Married people tend to rub off on each other no pun intended

Did you say rub?!?!? OHHHHH ;) However with the mech try using 1/8 inch copper line avail at pep boys. Dont let it rub against anything. Just font like nylon line carrying 50lbs of oil or more. Also use some type of thread sealant to on the fittings inside the car. oil soaked carpet sux. However elec gauges are slightly easier to hook up and seem to react slighly faster.

Got them ordered and on the way. I bought two guages A/F ratio and mechanical oil pressure. Both 2 1/16 Autometer Phantom series. Had to go autometer since they are known for accuracy :)

The A/F is so I can start playing around with the TBI and work on getting the crappy manifold to flow better. Somebody found a higher flowing TBI injector from holley so I might try that or get a adjustable fuel pressure reg on the return line. Also gonna try making a TBI spacer or stacking gaskets.

Too late to chime in on this one but here goes. A similiar
question was asked on neons.org a while ago and
everybody screamed electrical. Somebody even said they
had a huge mess inside there car when the plastic tube got
cut on a mechanical.
If your that careless and dont really care that much about
accuracy get the electrical. If you want something that works
with out the hassles of bad senders get the mechanical. I
have a 2 5/8 goo filled mechanical in my car and love it.

Yeah that was one of the main concerns I had with going mechanical. But if they send you that nylon tubing and the guage reads up to 100psi I figured I could trust it as long as it doesnt rub against something and get cut. Ill be taking extra care to ensure that doesnt happen. Or I might just break down and get the copper line RB was talking about. I guess now the trick is gonna be finding a T-adapter for the stock pressure sensor and the guage to hook up to. I dont want my oil pressure light on.

Or maybe there is a way to trick the computer to think the sensor is there still? Last time I remember there is only one pin on the oil pressure sender does that mean its grounded to the block? If so maybe I can just measure the resistance and solder a resistor on :D

Or I could just go the easy route and take the bulb out for the oil pressure warning light.

Oh yea Im having a hard time with the electrical voltage
gauge. If all you have is a hamster making a big whirring
sound couldnt you hook the gauge to the hamsters ass to
measure its productivity??

Ok im sorry i couldnt resist. Just working on the neon puts
me in an all motor mood. I drove the csx yesterday and it
makes such wonderful noises but big cams and 8k in a
neon are fun too.

You dont even have to worry about a tee or a resistor. Just
unplug it. The oil pressure sender only goes to the idiot
light not to the computer. If you are worried about it you
could do a tee and have the gauge and idiot light kind of
double protection but since the light works so
well:mad::mad: i wouldnt worry about it.

If you have two hamsters you will need some sort of jumper usually a wire with alligator clips works well

:evil5:

Looks like I will be pulling the bulb. Its probably the best solution. While I am doing that Ill have to swap in my ricetech indiglo dash board.

mpbiv

And carbon fiber inserts :haha:

leadfootedfool

I was thinking more along the lines of a probe. The clip
seems kind of harsh. I think two hamsters would sound
more like a sheep after jeff gets done with
them:boink::boink: than a turbo.

Oh yea i dont think you have to pull the bulb just pulling the
plug to the sender should do it.

mpbiv
05-02-2002, 12:26 AM
Nah you have to do what I do hook your hamster wheel tach up to your stereo so that the faster it spins the louder the stereo is and then you put a tape or cd in with a Turbo sound.

leadfootedfool
05-02-2002, 12:32 AM
sweeeeeet. now i know how to do it. i think i might like a
sheep there anyway:naughty::naughty::naughty: haha.

rb70383

Sorry to interupt all the new sheep fetish going on around here :haha: the oil sender grounds out to the block jusy pull the wire off. if it hits metal the oil light will flash. Instead of the nylon go to pep boys and get 1/8 copper line. That is what I use.

Will this make Filter spin as well?

I though it would be obvious but yes it does but only when you directly mount it to the hamster wheel

CrazyMoparGirl
05-20-2002, 01:44 AM
Well I figured that part but will it make FILTER spin?

http://www.tamparacing.com/hebb/upload/filter16.jpg

Would that make him a spinner?

mpbiv
05-20-2002, 01:46 AM
Well when you have the Turbo sound CD in its hard to make the Filter spin unless you have a disc changer and a set of 20s in the back.

CrazyMoparGirl
05-20-2002, 01:50 AM
So how do I go about running the Hamster wheel to the cd changer and amp to get the 20s going?

mpbiv
05-20-2002, 01:53 AM
Well first you have to swap for a jdm gerbil then well talk :D

Iroc Joe
05-20-2002, 02:23 AM
yeah those jdm gerbils are soo much better than round-eye gerbils. Not only do they work harder they are also extreamly more intelligent and respond well to beatings and inhumane treatments. Make sure to feed them long grain rice though you wouldnt want the little buggers stomachs exploding.

CrazyMoparGirl
05-20-2002, 02:33 AM
I was actually considering the TRD gerbils are they better or worse?

Well I installed those guages about a week and a half ago and I am just now getting around to posting some pics. I got tired of working on that guage pod idea so I mounted them somewhere else. Guess I am gonna need a new ash tray after all :D

Its not for smoking its to replace the one in there with the big piece chipped off the corner. I was going to replace the ash tray with a fiberglass guagepod but I changed my mind.

CrazyMoparGirl

Why not make a fiberglass replica/cover and hide some cool stuff where the ashtray was?
