Have you guys done any of them, I know everyone's going to talk about how they've been doing it since they were 5 years old and what not, but I want to know what schools are reccomended. I just want to do it for 'fun', not a career. Just a skill that's always had me fascinated. Plus every single car/truck I've ever owned has needed paint/body work at some time in it's life
Thanks in advance guys

Check out Marchman which is a technical school up in hudson, or if thats to far their might be other schools that offer it. Just look for them at technical schools where you can learn just that specific topic and not have to take other classes not related. Nice thing is age does not matter.

great, thanks for the quick response. I think I've heard of ptec or something, I'll look into all that tomorrow.
I just want something that isn't a bunch of kids that don't give a f- because they're parents are sending them there because they have nothing else to do... I went to UTI and saw PLENTY of that. No paint/body in the orlando campus anyway. Besdies that, I'd love to learn something because I want to, not because I have to.

I am SO with you on this. I have always wanted to learn to paint, I would love to be able to do whatever look I want on my vehicle (no matter what vehicle it is, they've all needed it, even my truck) and not have to pay someone $3500 for their skill, but rather just buy the materials, and use my own skill.
Plus, look at it this way, if you knew how to paint, and things ever went sour with your career, you could do side jobs and make ends meet for a little.
let me know what you find out mark, I would really love to learn to paint!!

Marchman (MTEC) as stated before. Right off Little Rd & Ridge Rd in Port Richey.
I dont know how you would feel about taking classes with juniors and seniors in HS w./ a few adults. :dunno:
But its a good course for sure, alot of hands on.

yeah i mean if the teachers are good and there's good hands on it dosn't really matter. I apparently look like a junior in highschool anyway
and jason, im with you 100%
i know it's a skill thing and people put a lot of effort into it, but paying anyone 2000 (labor) for anything is a real killer for me. yeah, i guess i'm a cheap ass but i'm a diy'er at heart, always will be.

HCC! I think it's about $3600 course for 1 year program as a full time student or 2 years program as a part time student.
Go for it! I want to repaint my Honda with the same O.E.M. color!

I've ALWAYS been a DIY'er, even if I dont know how to do it, I'll fuck it up teaching myself to do it the right way, then fix it the right way after I've learned from my mistakes. If I had an old car body or something I'd probably give painting a go, but there's a hell of alot more to it than that, so I'd really like to go to school for it.
And like I said, there is ALWAYS side work if you get bored and get a little itch to make some money.

yep, 95% of people I know with cars need some kind of paint, it's wether they can afford it or not is the question lol.
Sang I'll look into hcc, you know anyone whose done it there? I really don't want to just read books and talk about, and take tests on painting, that's all I can remember from HCC

im going to hcc for their body and paint program i just payed 1300 for next semester. you start off learning how to use body filler and shape it next semester were doing frame pulling you dont get to do much with painting untill 3rd term but we did use the paint guns for alot of priming and painting our small projects biggest being a fender. its a little slow for my taste so I stayed after class every day and got a head start on painting. i think the paint teacher is really cool and smart as hell.

i had 2 friends complete the program theres very little book work so far and they dont mind you bringing in your own projects as long as you work on them and not use your stall as storage

no its past the ybor campus behind brocatos where the cops and fire fighters train. i hope i didnt make it sound like its not hands on. if you have cars to bring in and work on you can as long as you do the projects they give you to do and if you dont have anything to work on then they can give you things to do and then you have your group of ppl that think if they just do their projects and clock out early its enough

I hear you! The prices on the damn scantrons have rise up to $1.25 for each pack, and the parking lot is absolutely horrible. FUUUU!
I've heard about it from the HCC deans while I was applying for an application. I believe it's in Ybor campus, but don't take my word for it. Also, I doubt that it's all about reading books and taking tests, but you can actually get your hands on projects, painting, and etc. After completing the projects, the professors/technicians analyze your mistakes and correct them. I actually recommend Jaime to take the course last two years ago, but he didn't have enough green paper bills. But then again, he could have just looked into financial aids.
Do it! You can save one (different color panel) Honda's/240's at a time and it'll truly be "clean".

Its three semesters and one internship. I am an ex student and an ex instructor from HCC. Good start to a career painting cars. I currently work for Gene Perez. You are going to get what you put in so get as much out of it as possible.

thats it lets start a business. The Ricer Rescue Squad could be our company name or something like that lol
I'm pretty set on what I'm doing career wise but IF that doesnt work out then I want to do something with cars. Paint and body is a killer market. I know NOBODY that does it. Especially since you could do multiple side jobs at a time.
I have a brilliant idea. Get a big ass trailer and use that as your booth and travel to different jobs and paint them there. You do it in incriments, go do some work, take their car out to store, then come back another day and do more work. They pay for materials up front and can watch you do it at their own home.
I should delete this, go to school, and do this. My business and nobody else's  Although i'm sure there is more involved than just this.
Plus im sure its been done

only read the original post but I will give my answer, yes there is schools, however the best school by far is real life experience, I know from a personal stand point that shops would rather teach you than have you come in with experience(in most cases) because then they can teach you how they like and not the traditional "school" way, every shop I have worked at says they do not like the people that learned in schools because they come out of it and are no better off than practicing in their own yards because any one can paint, weld, sand, ect in an ideal situation but when put in the real world situation in a shop it is an intirely(sp, lol its late) different story.

I am the paint instuctor at hcc . i can teach you everything you need to know about collision repair and painting , but its up to you to spend your time in the lab because if your not there you wont learn it. this program is a great way for somebody that knows nothing about it to definately learn the basics. it does take time to learn this stuff. this is a hands on course. i have pass students that are great painters now but then again this field isnt for everybody , some people have it and some never will. i have 19 years experience as a painter and 10 years as a body man. I am a combo guy. You will learn more than you and your boys can in the back yard. Ha thats funny .

Check out the ford forums under projects and look for the dirty coupe project. This car is one of the cars that i have my students rebuliding. Starting from the ground up, replacing body panels because of rust. This car will be painted black and will be straight and shiny. NOT NO BACKYARD JOB !
