Default BMW considering offering M3 GT4 to gentlemen racers

Although BMW's M division may have arguably veered off course with the recent introduction of the X5M and X6M, well-to-do M-ophiles may have something to look forward to in the form of a M3 GT4 available to consumers.

Campaigned at the 24 Hours of Nürburgring this past May, the GT4 variant of BMW's V8-powered M3 is fitted with all the race-ready kit you'd expect in something developed to tackle the Green Hell, including an Ohlins suspension setup, aerodynamic enhancements, a full roll cage, airjack system, race buckets and a modified engine and transmission. "It would be specifically for motorsport drivers," BMW's M division head, Dr. Kay Segler told Autoblog. Translation: Don't expect to see this car on the street – it's a trackday toy or competition-only machine.

Although the trigger hasn't been pulled, Segler said it's being actively considered. If we had to bet, we'd expect the GT4 to be available to gentlemen racers sometime in 2010.

I see people out there spending money on the car to improve it … If you spend half that effort just working on your driving skills, making you and the car work together as a team, then you’ll go faster – period. To make the car go a second faster on the track takes a lot more energy and money than making yourself drive it one second faster.

awesome...

but something about buying a built racecar seems to lose the fun out of racing a car you built yourself.

I would valet the car and watch him shit himself. then be like psych dog, in your dreams and leave at like 200000 MPH

What are the specs on the motor? Saw these cars at St. Pete Gran Prix and they sounded sweet.

markzeronine: where did you find that sig? The look on that dogs face is priceless!

its near to the normal M3.

The transmission, engine, suspension and brakes only got minor upgrades.

it still delivers 420 PS (bhp) out of the V8 engine, I think they just made some changes to make it last longer during the races.

The rules only allow a sport exhaust system and a one mass flywheel, raising the power about 5% maximum

more infos here, in German though

ask for particular parts of the report, I'll translate them.
