My girl drives a 98 Neon with a 2.0 16v. She wants me to help her make it fast but I dont know the first thing about domestics. I need some suggestions.

Well for starters theeasiest way to make it a mid 14s car is swap a stratus 2.4 L in it and get the turbo manifold for it from mexico and slap on a turbo www.cnnp.com you ccan pay him to do it or pick his brain pick up the recent issue of Mopars Now it tel ya how to do the 2.4 swap. depends on how much time and money youhave or you can buy a DOHC engine and pcm and build it up www.howellautomotive.com. My friend did the 2.4 swap N/A and whooped up on a GSR without breaking a sweat. One more suggestion getan LSD for it. Youre gonna need it. Torque steer is nasty in the Neons.

I dont really think he wanted to get that involved in the car.... hahahaha. I honestly dont know man. I havent played with 2.0s. Search the net theres plenty who have. Probably little things like a nice flowing exhaust and maybe bumping the timing up a little would give her all the kick she wants?

Best bang for the buck: Iceman CAI.
Then get an underdrive pulley (does wonders for the neon) and a larger throttle body.
Oh and since its a SOHC look into a better-flowing muffler (piping is already 2.25)

You might also want to check out the last 2 issues of SCC they have a new project neon and its a SOHC.

go to www.modernperformance.com to check out all the good stuff

one other good website is www.neons.org they have their fair share of rice but a few chrysler engineers are also there.

Supertrap mufflers are nice they sound horid but you can tune them for hp of lb ft. I had on on mine and it worked great some other things I thought of were:
Index the spark plugs
get a better set of plug wires
Mopar Performance PCM is good but the AFX Race one is best plus the Mopar Performance Race Header
FYI
On my old 96 ACR DOHC we did the following
Bosch Platinum plugs indexed
Unorthodox underdrive pulley
homemade cold air using stock airbox under the battery
jacobs electronics plug wires
ran a best of 15.8 @ 88 mph full interior w/ stereo including two amps and two 12 JBL subs.

one other thing I thought of adjustable cam gear. or if you are really handy you can degree the stock one real easily ie free hp and lb ft.

Index the spark plugs? This is a trick used usually in large engines (V-8s and some V-6s) and in a small engine with no major modification it would be a waste of time. It MIGHT net you a whole .25 of 1hp. One the other hand Neons suffer from a poorly designed intake and exhause manifold. A race header in conjunction w/ a computer and a port matched intake maifold and/or just a bored throttle body can make a world of difference especially top end on the DOHCs.

You wanna see a poorly designed intake and exhaust.. look at the 2.0s father the 2.5.. and its grandfather the 2.2. LOL. WTF was Dodge thinking? They do flow surprisingly well for the design but its still nothing to write home about. We gotta force feed them with 20psi boost to make them flow! Then theres the 8v head... but were not even gonna get into that... :(

I dropped a full sec off the 1/4 et with the mods I made to my DOHC Neon w/o race header TB or PCM One trick some of my Neon buddies did was take a TB off of an auto Neon and stick it on our 5 sp ones it helped only with 1/8 mile times not 1/4 you have to redo the intake to feel the full benefit. Yes port matching helps out a ton no matter whatyou do it with even if indexing only gets you a 1/4 hp its still a 1/4 more hp than you had originally. The biggest thing that helped me and my buddies was the LSD. Neons love to spin the tires and torque steerone reason why I hated my car. Im planning on rebuilding my Neon engine and finding a body to stick it in in the next 6mts. Thinking about stroking that 2.0L and getting the Turbo manifolds off of a 2.4L for it but I gotta finish the truck and pay Jeff off first. BTW Jeff how are those headers for the 2.2/2.5s coming along? Bob doesnt keep me in the loop too much anymore.

Jesses (JRB) header was tested and it got all distorted and warped. I havent heard anything since. But seeing as how he wanted like $900 for the header and 99% of the dodge crowd are cheap mofos im not even sure he would produce them. There is a guy in lakeland FL that a turbo buddy of mine from around here are going to talk to and see if he could make us something. He makes kick ass headers for 2.3L Fords.

Go here to check his work:

As I said this local friend of mine (Rich Gromer from Cape Coral if you knwo him) has been in contact with the header guy a little while back so hes going to start talking to him about our engines and he and I may drive up there someday with a spare head for a model. Ill let you guys know how it goes.
