I need some of your expert opinions on the dodge ram. 1999- 2004ish
Some consumer reporting sites say that they make a good reliable truck. Some of my friends have told me that the rearend is weak. There are 3 guys at work with them and they all love them. Who is right?
I can't afford a Tundra, can't find a T100, don't really want a silverado, and I'm leaning twords an f150 now just because i like the way it looks. Help!

Dodge drivetrains suck, period. I know a guy who had a charger and it was brand new and the damn transmission was replaced two times in a month!

you get what you pay for there's a reason the are cheap. Also, if you can afford a tundra you can afford a similar F-150, the new tundras tank in value.

ive got an 04 1500 2wd quad cab bought it with 12miles and now its got 91,000 miles.... ive taken it through mud to the windows , sand pits from hell and snow like theres no tomorrow ive never had anything huge happen... although i must say i am on my 4th power steering pump and every where i take it cant figure out why the keep going...i also have a 32ft boat that i pull atleast once a month and a 23ft car hauler that i pull every weekend...its been a great truck and never let me down i would recommend one to anyone the only down fall is with dodge is that the over drive goes out on the tranny when it does that it clogs the pumps and filter thus causeing the tranny to fry i drive with od off and i never have a worrie... keep it posted on wether you get one or not...

just picked up a ram 1500 myself a few weeks back. 2005 with 65k miles and it shifits nice and smooth. I plan to tow my car trailer with it fairly frequently, I'll have to keep the overdrive thing in mind... although the highway mileage is going to suck. If it goes, I found a place who makes aftermarket transmissions so I will probably swap one of those in.
someone was telling me that doge extended the warranty on the drivetrain to 100k miles to avoid a class action lawsuit. Is this true?

the only way the warranty will hold up is if you get the extended warranty...also the seconde prob that just came to mind about my dodge is that the dash has cracked on the passanger side around the defroster vent its nothing to worry about and is covered by dodge as long as you pay labor they will buy the parts labor was 70 something when i had my done but the dash was like 600 so i was happy that all i had to pay was labor...

Well thanks for all the responses guys. I really appreciate it. I'm looking at another f150 today, so I'll let everyone know how it went later this evening. Thanks again

same can be said about ford. my ranger had the transmission out 3 times in 40k miles.
my dodge has given me no problems yet.
its an 05 quad cab hemi 4x4 . took it up to the UP and back in october . comfortable, and power to pass on the mountains. love the truck! much more appealing than a ford.

newer dodges arent so bad but dodge has a horrible time with trannies and rearends. Im a chevy guy myself but you say you dont really want one so i would go with the f150

i would go chevy before ford.
i bought my ford for about 13k. 2 years and 40k miles later (less than 80k on the truck) and ford was only going to give me 2300 for it on a trade . theiving bastards . all i did was drive it and repair it every other weekend.

its all in how you take care of it. my ford had almost 300k miles on it running strong when i sold it. it had nothing more than a tune up and new alternator on the original 302 engine, tranny was replaced at 250k. 4wd was smooth as could be and i never had any problems with that truck. most of my friends drive chevy's, half of them are decent, the other half are complete pieces of shit but that happens with fords too.
my buddy has a 99 silverado that sees light mud maybe twice a year if that and hes on his 3rd transfer case, 2nd rear diff, 3rd front hub, and countless front axles. not to mention it runs like total shit. another friend with a silverado hasnt had a problem except for the cv axles which is common.
