Would this cause the engine to smoke?

At idle, yes it would if your motor is in poor shape. The PCV valve is open when not under acceleration, so if you have any blow-by gases, they're going straight into the combustion chamber to be burned.

Go to Discount Auto, get a brass fitting that is the same size as the PCV and delete it. then run that hose to a catch can or just dump it behind the firewall. PCV valves suck.
