+1

when my 302 had a blow thru carb it was still getting 17-18 mpg. big deal. it wasn't until i went with bigger cubes and a bigger snail that i dropped down to 15-16.

i don't care what it is as long as it works. carb works for my application.

Add me to the list.

I've gotten in excess of 20 mpg in my 67 when I drove from Seattle to Ohio. Of course, I had freeway gears in the rear, and the car was a turd in the 1/4 barely managing a 15.40 at the time. Now, if I had an AOD and a set of 3:73's, I bet I could tune it to get 20 mpg and still run in the mid 12's or better. My FI set up is all forign to me and I have to get a special computer to read it to tell me what $80-$200 sensor I need to replace to make it run "right". Pfff...A carb set up, I can fiddle with the jets and make it run right within 20 minutes. $2-$4 jets vs $80-$200 sensor....

05-22-2008, 06:16 PM
Who cares anymore....they both fucking work

EFI is the way of the future you have to admit the carb is still going strong but its on its way out....atleast in the higher end race cars.

You walk around an event and now a days you are starting to see more and more EFI cars...there is a reason for that. You have ultimate control over every single aspect in your car. Not to mention the data loggin capibilities to monitor and study each and eveyrun and make changes as needed.

Now yes the EFI shit is pricey but as time goes on what the big dawg races are using now adays will eventually trickle down to the low budget racer and become within each of most peoples affordable price range.

No dont get me wrong carb's will never go away they will always be out there, but as the older races start to fall off the map and hang up their helmets (or tools) for good they will take that old technology with them.

So here is my opinions

low budget racer - carb all the way
big money racer -EFI all the way

Just my .02 cent....here we go I know I am gonna catch alot of shit for this one.

:corn:

IwinUlose
05-22-2008, 06:34 PM
Hmmmm. I guess NASCAR's cant do data logging? They have carbs

91Notch
05-22-2008, 06:42 PM
But you cant tell me that if NASCAR allowed EFI that you couldnt tune it for a particular tack to get up out of a corner faster????

The biggest thing I hate about carb guys is hearing them say "I am gonna change my jets"

There is more to a carb than just changing the jets. Everyone can change jets, but how many people out there actually know how to properly tune a carb????

Thats not directed to anyone on here so chill out.

I agree with Dave, and I've had some badass carbed cars.Carbs are very affordable, usually make more power on a N/A nitrous build, and work great at wide open throttle. But for drivability and tuning/data logging,EFI is the way to go.

carbs are not as easy to get right as most people think. as said before there is alot more to a carb than changing jets - ESPECIALLY blowthrough which is becoming extremely popular.

Not everyone is smart enought to connect two plugs together to make efi work.

I have had both, they both are not some mysterioius abyss or magic that makes a motor run.

All you need to tune a carb is a wrench and a screwdriver. all you need to tune efi is to have the right sensors and it will tune its self within the parameters of the ecu.

You guy who have all these nice parts and stock computers are just as stupid as the fool with the same parts with a super vic or vic jr and a stock vacuum secondary 500 cfm carb.

it's all in how you drive her. my hubby doesn't even get 13mpg when he drives her. i swear, you guys have no finesse. lol anyone can mat a foot to the floor and blow a quarter tank of gas going nowhere. when you are driving around with shit-tons of torque, it takes a delicate throttle to get anywhere and keep some fuel in the tank.

and you're right. mpg doesn't really matter to me. i only drive her a couple of days a week. i got a box for cheap daily driver duty.

for those of you that are serious into racing and intend on making money with your car by being consistent or you need to scrape every last tenth out of your setup, EFI is prolly the best way to go providing you have deep enough pockets or can tune it yourself. i remember every time i made a change in my setup (like when i swapped from blower to turbo) it was a bigger set of injectors, a bigger mass air, a trip to the tuner.... it adds up.

but for weekend warriors like myself who only want to go out and have a good time, ease of doing my business and being easier on the wallet fit the bill. and no, its not just about changing jets. you still have to know what you are doing with a carb. i don't need every last tenth, i don't care whether it is 100% efficient, i only care the she goes moderately fast, she goes very straight, and she goes home in one piece.

but... having said all that... properly tuned, either application will kick serious ass.

I dont hate EFI. Doing up 2 EFi cars now. But I prefer a carb,.. 1 for low cost,. and 2 for ease of tuning.

On EFI if a sensor is malfuctioning or intermittent,.. this can cause mightmares. With a carb you have 2 things,.. fuel and spark. So simple even a caveman could do it.

Cocheese's set up FTMFW!

fap fap fap fap

If I went into the garage and saw that, I think I would pass out.

Anyway, back on topic...kinda. The general consensus, so far, has been that EFI costs more $$$ than a carb, makes the same or (in some cases) more power, and only a marginal decrease in MPG if any at all. Sounds like the clear winner here is a carb set up to me. Now I just need to convince the wife to let me switch the Cobra over. LOL I will admit though, once you get an EFI set up tuned right and all the sensors right, (to the tune of around $2000) they are great and you don't need to mess with them. Where as with a carb set up, it's getting fuel all over you again for a change in the weather or a track set up vs. street set up. I still choose the carb set up.

There is more than just changing jets to tune a carb.

The squirters, the accelerator pump cam to change how fast the fuel comes in. the size of the pump shot, the powervalve.

Anyone who thinks you can tune a carb with a just a jet change and a float adjustment obviously doesn't know shit about carbs or efi.

that might have to do with the fact that most ford-techies have street/strip fox bodies, for which they are great.

you arent going to see many people with mod motors going carb (although i would love to do a carbed 5.4 DOHC/T3650 in a fairmont wagon):D .

you arent going to see many people with LS1s going carb - unless its in an older chassis but most still want the EFI.

most DDs with AC/PS/OD are going to want EFI.

^^^ thats the major down fall of EFI having to bring the car back to get retuned when you make a change to your setup.

But the high end technology that the top dawg racers have used for years that lets you get in there with a computer and change something yourself is starting to come down in price and is starting to become affordable to the averager race. Meaning all you need is a lap top and so said computer and you can tune the car yourself.

But even if you have that ability you still need to have a grasp on what your doing so you dont blow your motor through the hood :-o

Adrenalin
05-24-2008, 02:54 PM
I don't look forward to learning how to tune it, so I will have someone tune it the first time and try learning it so I can do it myself later. I do think it's the better way to go though. jmho

^ I just gave my opinion from the experiences Ive had/witnessed. A good example is 91notchs car. His EFI is whats keeping his badass ride from flying like it should be. Hell, if there were a carb on that car I'm sure due to money/simplicity factors it could be fixed. Yea EFI if tuned properly is badass and can make incredible amounts of power. But for people like me who don't have the time or teh cash to spend on EFI carb is IMO the way to go. No need to get all personal like I was attacking you or something. Thats why I think the internet fails at communication.

Carbs = win, at least when I have my screwdriver handy.

EFI = broke dick sensors and wire harness and tuning after every mod.

Tony you get a fox yet?
