its not that hard, you have to look at the distribitor placement, spark plug angle, exhaust runner spacing and valve cover and you can thru a process of elimination you can cut it down to one, they are a few it helps to know. I know 409s were pretty different motors compared to most SBCs

although the 348 was dumb luck, i did not know about the 348/409 dipstick difference, the buick nail head was just deduction as nothing else looked right.

Two or three of those I had narrow it down to two and they ended up being the same make.. so I just had to guess... Now if they had sound to go with it.. I may have got a few more right.. LOL..
