View Full Version : Turbo ?'s

Adrenalin's & $hawn's sig pictures got me thinking... Just curious as to a few things on a Turbo Combo... ((( No need for Turbo vs. Supercharger or Carb vs. EFI battles  )))
What does the position (placement) of the Turbo have to do with the setup? Not height; as I know the snail has to be able to circulate oil successfully and then return it to the oil pan (right?) - but as in location like this:
http://www.cruizinconcepts.com/images/CARTECH/ct_fox_street_turbo.jpg
vs. this:
http://www.tamparacing.com/photopost/data/500/turbosig.JPG
Then of course I've seen them mounted in the bumpers or between the radiator and the motor, etc.
Why is this? Is each different location of install just for fitment, or is it a certain style kit that puts the turbo in one location rather than the other? Is one side of the engine bay more efficient to use (space, max hp, plumbing, etc) than the other?
Discuss...

the placement of the turbo really doesn't have anything to do with anything other than style or fitment.
there are so many different places to put a turbo... people put them there to hide them, to make them fit, or to be different...
i don't know of any specific benefits to putting them in one place over another... but i guess it depends on the application...

Depends on what accesories you are running and what exhaust. More than one right way. I have a PTK kit thats like the 2nd pic and you can keep everything(a/c,ps etc.)

Like Shinny said, the placements of them are room and accesories.Front mounted turbos, like Chads in the front bumper are for direct airflow usually for race cars.It would suck ass to get a bird sucked up in one of them.

I don't claim to be real knowlegeable on turbos by any means, but as far as I am concerned, I need the clearance for my accessories. Aside from that, high enough that the oil can drain into the pan quick/easy enough.
I've seen some classes state that you can not run a forward facing turbo.

Turbo's are sweet, but to be competitive with the car, be ready to spend some coin to tune. I say this because FI is the only way you can somewhat be consistent / competitve. Not trying to start a debate on which is better, carb vs FI , but on a carb blow thru set-up it will never be consistent. Fast hell yeah, consistent no. I'm a carb kinda guy all the way, add psi I'd have to do FI personally. That alone is why I dont have a boosted fox.
Are you still looking to run a "class" with car?? If so use the k.i.s.s. method.
As far as placement of turbo, its only for acc's street or airflow race. On the low/rear mounted turbo, oil pressure feeds bearings but you would need a pump to return the oil to pan.

Interesting, that is basically what I had assumed - but I didn't want to go on that assumption alone.
I mean hell, I'm learning something new every day! :D
Turbo is something I'd like to do to my Mustang someday down the line (a few years out). But I don't know much about turbocharging a V8, with a carb nonetheless!

You mean you don't need 1,000 rwtq?

Well, I wouldn't mind it... But don't think it's necessary anytime soon.
I'll be happy with some consistent low 10's and mid-high 9's when set on kill :crack: I could probably crack that with the setup I have now, and a ginormous shot of gas. But you know how much we like boost :yikes:

Tell me about it
It actually hasn't got anything to do with that, I've always loved forced induction. Which is why I had originally bought my '03 Cobra... And why Smokeshow and OldMan got me into Mustangs and S/C's, etc!
I've never personally been in a turbocharged Fox Body. I've turbocharged a few vehicles in my time - mainly sport compacts and imports. Why not make this one my first :nerd:
It's no rush, not even set in stone. Just an idea that I'd like to look into to see the cost increases, time delays / extensions, etc.

I remember having a discussion witha Street Outlaw racer a few years back, said forward facing turbos for a ram air effect truly didn't come into play until you got upwards of 200mph.. Chip Haverman was the source.. so take it for what it's worth!
