View Full Version : 2003 6.0 PSD - New PCM Flash - Banks 6-Gun Inoperable

I just got my truck back from the dealer about an hour ago where it was serviced and I have not had time to tinker with it yet.

I am hoping I can gain some insight from you before I start turning wrenches so-to-speak.

Scenario:
ICP Failure, EGR Failure, Battery Failure (both) and subsequent re-flash of PCM.
The Banks 6-Gun was disconnected prior to the service, then reconnected afterwards.
Now, with the Banks 6-Gun connected it is having issues shifting (automatic) and goes into "Safe-mode" (don't ask me, got that term from the mechanic).

Apparently, with the Banks 6-Gun connected after the re-flashing of the PCM it would NOT go past 65MPH, was shifting erratically, slipping into neutral from 4th and was flashing the "Over Drive" signal on the dash. http://www.thedieselstop.com/forums/images/smilies/sick.gif

Is there something I need to do to get the Banks kit back on-line and operational other than just plugging it in.

It has been in the truck for about 18 months without a hiccup.

I have left it on setting #6, as it is right now.

For now, the Banks kit is disconnected and is operating fine (just weak relative to when it has the Banks kit operational).

Thanks guys, I always appreciate your help.

Cecil

FYI - After having the additional power from Banks no longer available..... ole girl seems like a "pig" http://www.thedieselstop.com/forums/images/smilies/thdown.gif

I recieved a email from banks regarding this issue with Ford's Update for the 03-06 6.0 PSD diesels. Its was done to try to reduce some of the warranty claims because of things caused by having programmers. Its not just the Banks Systems either. Its also happening with Edge, an Bully Dog programmers.

Damn, sorry to hear that Cecil. If they try and charging you that much to get a new ECU and such, I'd go with another programmer. I went with the SCT xcal3 with custom tunes from DJ. Great customer service and awesome tunes. The SCT can store up to 3. Not to mention they are in Ocala. You can even take it to the Gainesville 1/4 mile track and they will tune your truck free of charge!!!

I HIGHLY recommend them to anyone. Their Looney tune is SICK!

The Banks product has worked well.
I think the issue is more with the Ford program, as mentioned by IWinULose above.
Sucks.... I just lost 140hp and 3-4 MPG. :-(

So what's the deal?
Can I NOT use a programmer with this new PSM Flash?
Can I revert back to a previous flash?

My warrranty is just about up and I would rather have a truck that performs vice a nurtured puss-mobile.

Can you please forward me the email from Banks?
I should be able to use it to leverage the dealer to revert the flash back to a non-restricted version.

What HP, Torque & MPG gains have you seen with the tuner?

This is from their website. Price is $425 shipped to your door.

Our files are basic: economy, tow, street and looney. We can basically create the file that you will feel most comfortable with.

* Economy is designed for bumper-to-bumper traffic to reduce turbo lag. We've been told you can save between 2-4 mpg. (40rwhp)
* Tow is designed for pulling. A normal tow file is about 50hp, when aggressive can range between 65-75. We can also add jake brake to any tune, except Looney. This feature works with the exhaust back pressure in your truck.
* Street is designed for highway driving. It's driveability parameters are intensifed for ease in passing and maintaining higher speeds for longer periods of time. (90-120rwhp)
* Looney is designed for city driving and the track. It is the highest race tune that we will send via the net without physically tuning your truck. (130-160rwhp)

Cecil, I will see what i can do via working with banks. I will talk to my rep an see what i can do for you. Ford WILL NOT revert back to a unrestricted tune. I've already tried. I even talked to Wayne Hammonds at brandon ford to see what he could do for me

It sounds like with this flash NONE of the programmers will work..... that will really suck! :(

it was $520 shipped 3-day ground w/ 2 year warranty directly from banks. My truck just started doing it outta the blue.

Cecil: Have you tried calling banks for them to talk you thru on how to reset your ecu. They did it with me when i first bought my truck from ford with the progranner. The banks programmer couldnt read the switch so the told me step by step process. Outta all 6 tech(the ones who trouble shut over the phone) i hated most was joe. So if you get himask for jim or jon. Jim got me a 15% discount for no reason.

I hope you can figure it out. Its like $5 if you bought the banks promgrammer from banks, themself, to send it to them and get tested or $45 if you bought from someone else.

I do have to say i feel bad for you because i hated every second of running on "stock" mode but im back to "6". and lovin every sec.

I wouldn't say that Dougs will blow DJ's out of the water. There are tons of people with both of their tunes and it's all preference. Most say DJ's tunes are more drivable than Doug's. I know people that run both and all parties are happy. Can't go wrong either way.

After re-connecting the Banks kit, validating the connections and following the directions of the Banks tech, it did exactly what the Ford tech described.

It was shifting erratically and neutral dropping, falling on it's nose and just basically having a ton of tranny related issues.

I called Banks back, they reminded me of the "Learn Mode" that takes place.
I re-did that and loddie-dah!
All systems are a go!

I was able to drive it 50 miles one morning (from the house, to my kids school, ten to work) and averaged 18.1 MPG!

And for a truck with 37" tires and 4.88 gears, that's pretty darn good.

Thanks for all the feedback and suggestions.

For now, we are back in business.

congrats on getting back up and running.

when you say learn mode. thats for the tranny, right? Its where you have to do a 30 to 60mph run 3 times. mine never did what you discribed yours doing. i just plugged mine in and drove till i got to a open road and during that drive it didnt do anything abnormal :dunno:

How do you like them 4.88's? I've got a 6.0 with 20's and 37's, and I was wondering if I really needed a gear.

Patrick
05-17-2008, 07:48 PM
4.88's would be great for towing, but a bit of an overkill for highway driving. Lucky if you can go 70mph without having the motor screaming.

18.1 mpg is pretty damn awesome. I think I'm gonna go with 4.30's soon. the 3.73's are just not cutting it when I'm towing.

I know SCT suggests when you change a tune to do the following.

drive til shifts to first. stop, drive til it shifts to first, then second, stop. and so on through all the gears. do that twice and your good go to.

the banks tech told me that 30 to 60 thing. every programmer is different tho.

With bully dog you have to make a hard accell to 55mph and hold there for 5 seconds, back down and do the same thing twice.

I like the gearing, more so around town than on the open road.
When I tow, it's great.
Otherwise, it's a little bit much.
Cruising on the interstate without a load at 80mph whips through fuel pretty quickly.

Patrick

See I've got a 4.10 right now, but until I put this programmer on it felt kinda sluggish, I was thinking maybe a 4.56 or 4.88 but I want performance AND mileage gains.

Patrick

if your going to stay with 37's and it doesn't seem like you tow, 4.30's would be the way to go. no more than 4.56's

I rarely tow, at most I'll tow some lawn equipment once in a blue moon, a car trailor, or some 4wheelers, but I rarely tow any of this.
