I found a nice gem. It happens to be covered in some brown substance, which is job #1. It will get blasted and epoxy primed, then on to metal repair. Im no bodyman but I do all my own work. Ill be doing metal repairs with a minimum of filler. I have not chosen exactly what color etc yet but will let the project evolve naturally. I have some inspiration pics as well.

Please dont scroll down and freak out, yes its a chevrolet.:-o

I already have the 351 windsor/5-speed/9" rear ready:bigthumb:That takes alot of time and expense out of the way.
I hope ya'll can dig on this ride, if not ill take te post down:hide:

Thanks for the encouragement guys. Im open to everyones opinions here. It may help alot. Bamboo is out, oak bed is enough for me:roll:
I have seen ol cars done up classy to trashy, pretty much do whayever you wish. I'd like to keep as much original as possible. That doesnt include the drivetrain and suspension, thats all made stiff and for 55mph tops.

Im doing the majority of the chassis and drivline work first. I did order a complete mustang 2 frontend(here next week). Time to ge things ready. Heres my newest toy/tool a plasma cutter:D
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y6/RLNTHDR/xd012.jpg

I finally got some roll around tires and the frame is in the garage. Time to grind, gotta remove the front and rear completely. Heres a shot of 200 bucks worth of steel for the boxing, crossmembers and brackets. !/8"plate,1/4"plate, and 1/8"round tube. The lil square tubing is for seat bracket and a plasma cart I want to make.

Kick ass man! ... I dont know if you have ever used POR-15 rust inhibitor but its the shit! It chemicaly kills rust and turns it into somthing else. Even if you sandblast your frame id use it just because old metal has a way of comming back to bite you in the ass no matter how good the prep work is.

Kick ass project keep up the good work!

.Patrick.

por-15 rocks. its expensive, but its worth it knowing youll never have to worry about it again.

Thanks guys , and Ive already got the POR in the works. I have alot of fab/welding to do and when its done it'll get a nice coating on everything.

Those are the holeshots I have for sale. They will fit it, and will be used unless sold.
Still waiting on a few suspension parts, theyve been shipping me like ONE part at-a-time.

This was a GOOD weekend for me. I got the parts in hand and had time to work. Here are a few snaps of the M2 installed(loosely bolted). These wheels are just helping the mock-up, Ill be going with painted steelies. The frame will continue to look like shit until fab is complete and then its POR time:smile:

Looks awesome bro!

Seems like the installation of that allowed you to bring the frame way down close to dirt! Now that rear is mad raked! What's the plans out back to bring it down to grass?

shinysideup
06-22-2008, 11:54 PM
Yes, the front is lowhttp://www.unity.i8i.co.uk/forum/images/smiley_lrm.gif. I'll have 5-6" clearance at lowest point. The rear will sit about 1" higher so when loaded it will be level. Ill be using F150 spings and making custom brackets. The stock perches are naturaly extra long for height, so eliminating them will help considerably. I may need a 1-2" lowering block as well. Low-slung is how I roll:cool:

Picked up the explorer rear I was looking for from Cophers.
100 bucks with a 10 core,he even forgot to charge for the swaybar. I mounted it to the old springs and it is working out great! Damn I sweat out some beer today!
I wont have to move axle perches either. Ill just have to make a front spring-eye mount and a shackle on the rear.
Oh, almost forgot...trac-lock 3.73,31 spline,5 lug disc:strong:
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y6/RLNTHDR/hh002-1.jpg

The swaybar will mount prfectly without need for brackets.(boxed frame)

Ya, pretty good price, you should see what they want in spring hell for em:-o

I thougt the axle perch width would be off, but coincidently, they will work out right. So its just new springs, front brackets and rear shackles.:D

I went through all this about 4 years ago when I put a 460/C-6/9in rear into a 53 Ford F-250. Yes, they made F-250's in 53....Look them up. Basicly their a long bed version of the F-100.

Anyway, I never finished the project. I got it running, and used it to tow my 67 mustang here form Washington State. That was a fun drive! You should have seen the looks we ot on the way! Old Iron FTW! I can't wait to see how yours turns out.

I havent been slackin off in this heat. I built hangers and shackles for the leafsprings. The frame was leveled and the rear squared up. It is a long process to build custom brackets and locate them. Im happy with how it came out and I totally overbuilt the hangers(all 1/4" steel). The frame isnt as rusty as it looks its all surface rust. I cleaned the metal well before welding and will grind all of it clean before paint.

The frame is sitting at approx ride height in the front but the rear is unloaded and will settle down. Im shooting for a 1- 1 1/2" rake(almost level) and can use small lowering blocks to help when errything is weighted down to see where im at. I also have room to add more springs etc. Oh yeah, the rear,springs(3" mono-leafs),swaybar, and shackles are all '98 explorer parts.

Next to do is finish boxing the frame. I can then add the rear shock bar. I will then use the crossmembers you see to suspend the engine/trans.

funny how rears interchange. Ford 9" out of a 70's Maverick will also bolt in on a 67-69 Camaro. Exact same width on leaf spring perches.
