Good Pics. Skin Tone seems weird to me but she was probably just a little tan. Also it sucks those windows were there to catch your lights in the shot. Thats probably the hardest thing to do, setup lights good without having them reflect in a shot.

Skin Tone seems weird to me but she was probably just a little tan.

Yeah, she was quite tanned, I think I might need to desaturate the skin a little and see if I can make it work.

Also it sucks those windows were there to catch your lights in the shot. Thats probably the hardest thing to do, setup lights good without having them reflect in a shot.

Yeah, I spotted that immediately as soon as we pulled up. I should've said something right away, but it seemed like we were going to be able to shoot a number of different locations within the garage. In the end we got busted by a perverted security guard.

But #3, looks very unnatural. (not your fault) Its the model. She needs to smile more and not be so stiff.

Thanks DD. Yeah, there are some flaws on her part, but there were certainly more on my part. This was only the second time using the ABs to light a car, and certainly the first time lighting a person and a car. I'm pretty happy with the way they came out, but there's more than a lot of room for improvement. Can't wait to do it again.

I think next time I'm gonna do it without two other photographers there, their pictures are making mine look bad.

When you bring the flashes into the equation the number of variables seems to grow exponentially. I was doing too many things at once... I was too busy to notice that my shutter speed was a tad low, so most of my pics aren't as sharp as they could be. Live and learn I guess.

btuner
04-18-2008, 02:47 PM
yeah i only got like 80 pics and only ended up with about 10-15 where she was actually posing semi decent and the lighting was right

.:Chris:.
04-18-2008, 02:56 PM
I think next time I'm gonna use a tripod on all of the shots. Also, we need to switch the transmitter around rather than triggering optically. I have a handful of pictures where only one flash functioned.

btuner
04-18-2008, 03:11 PM
what power were the bees on when we were shooting?

.:Chris:.
04-18-2008, 03:22 PM
I can't remember, but they were pretty high. I think next time I might back them off and allow for more ambient light. I need to write this stuff down so I remember it next time.

Also, I figured out why my images have so much contrast (finally). I have a photoshop action for creating my signature and border, and somehow I managed to slip a contrast adjustment layer in the action without realizing it. I'll fix my pics when I get home, but suffice it to say they look a lot better now.

Try to bounce the lighting off of something if possible... It will definitely help with reflections...

I'm definitely not perfect but I NEVER aim my flash directly at something that could cause a reflection (car, window, glasses, shiny object...) Thats part of the reason I bought the flash I did... <~ It has a built in bounce-card...

I will say... These pics are 100x better then the ones you took of the K-Sight..

btuner
04-18-2008, 08:42 PM
yeah there wasn't really anything to bounce off plus the ceiling was really low in the first position thats why we moved to the second spot where there were no reflections, we didnt really care, it was most of our first time shooting with off camera flashes and we had a time limit set by the security guard so we deff didnt get to set up perfect and shoot everything we wanted

.:Chris:.

Bouncing off the ceiling would have caused more reflections on the car, and wouldn't have elimanated reflections in the glass. The glass is too reflective, anything that's lit is going to reflect regardless of the direction it's pointed.

Neither of the two big flashes were directly aimed at the car per se. One was bounced off of an umbrella, the other was going through a softbox with two diffusion panels.

I appreciate your help though.

Softbox = (for this atmosphere.)
Umbrella = Studio w/ "normal" lighting. I'm assuming the umbrella is reflective which is basically the same as aiming a light bulb directly at the car. <~ Granted, I know it softens and broadens the light so it spreads to a wider area...

I'm not a lighting expert by any-means! ~> Next time you do a photoshoot, PM me and I'll come out...

.:Chris:.
04-19-2008, 08:53 AM
Umbrella is two-sided, one's silver and the other is white. I believe we were using the white side this time. It is reflective but as you said, it broadens the light. Any time you increase the effective size of a light it becomse more diffuse. If you take a look at the setup shot and then take a look at the shadows, you'll see that the umbrella actually made for softer shadows than the softbox.

I'm no expert on the subject either, but I'm getting better at it. Next time I hope to get something going with a bit more advance notice. It should be in a couple of weeks.
