View Full Version : help, amps not powering on
I have a JL 300/2 bridged and a 300/4 running all 4 channels. I took the system out of my old Scion and put it in my new ride and the amps arent powering up. The /2 has no response to ignition and the /4 power LED blinks slowly. Its all the same components from my scion which worked great in that car. Heres what I have done as far as troubleshooting...
- Tested power at the fuse in the engine bay, both sides. 12V present
- Tested power at the power splitter both sides. Used the grounding point for the amp as the neg lead for my multimeter. 12V present
this kinda indicates to me that the amp grounding points are good.
- Checked voltage on remote lead with ignition in ACC. 12V present. Checked with ignition off. no 12v present.
Any of you guru's out there have any ideas? Blown fuse on the amp maybe? Is there some sort of protection circuitry in the JL's? These are both Version 1 slashes btw.
Thanks for any help!!!! Im going crazy with no sound!

You can't check the fuses yourself..?

Well, if you have 12v at the amp on both the power and remote wires...and you know your grounds are good....it's the amps. Odds of two amps going at once are slim though. Might want to double check all the terminals.

Sure I can... but there arent any fuses on the outside of the AMP (that i see). dont really care to crack them open just to find out if there are any inside.
So I'm an asshole! It was the ground. I went and bought a good digital multimeter (not the analog one I had) and measured everything again and noticed that when I tested voltage at the amp using the grounding point as negative lead for my MM it only gave me about 10.5V. This difference couldnt be seen on the analog MM. I regrounded and it works. Thanks for all the help guys I really appreciate it!

Sorry about that. Didnt know JL was stupid and put the fuses inside the damn thing.
I had a similar issue, I had my subwoofer bumping hard for no reason when i made tight turns and hit very uneven pavement. I had no idea what it was, and since recently I slammed my RCA cables and had a plug fall off, I coulda sworn it was shoddy Notladstyle soldering skills.
Then when I took the plug apart, i saw that sure as hell WASN'T the case, the solder was clean and connected tightly, although he used a lot of unnecessary electrical tape :?.
It turned out my ground was looser than this woman's vagina.:lol::lol: (http://www.efukt.com/1992_The_Looser_The_Better.html)

Until you've seen the things I've seen, I don't think you can really say that ;).
