i have an s10 with an 81 sbc motor and 350 tranny.
my question is what 5 or 6 speed manual transmissions are a direct bolt on to the 350 motors? will the t56 6 speed bolt from an ls1 bolt directly to it?
the only one i know of are the 5 speed that came in the newer style v6 vortec s10.

You would need a different bell housing to make the T-56 work. The 5 speed I think would be a far easier install for you.
And I think any 5 speed Camaro setup would work for you. I even think the newer S-10's came with a hydraulic setup for the clutch so it shouldn't be to hard to adapt the two to work together.

you would need a LT1 housing to make the LS1 T56 work in your application. Now as far as a 5 speed (T5) a S10 one will not work as the input shaft is for a 6cyl. the spline count is different which is why it wouldnt work and there also much weaker. one out of a 88+ Camaro are World class borg warner and are rated to 300lb/ft. 87 and under are non WC and rated for 250lb/ft and were designed for 6cyls. now a T56 from a LT1 is rated at 400lb/ft and im not sure if the LS1 is the same.

thanks for the help. i recently found out that the resource i was talking to was talking out of his ass just to sell the tranny. for those that might be doing this in the future the newer style s10 tranny (nv3500) will not bolt directly up to a small block chevy as i have found out as well as what jameson has said.
as for installing the t56. thanks for clearing up what bell housing i needed. i was told from a transmission shop that i will need a specific "conversion" flywheel and clutch. any idea if this is true? if so, which one and where could i find it. ive done a search but came up with no positive leads.

You will need a special flywheel to bolt a t-56 to a older 350. Centerforce makes one for about $400. Go to thirdgen.org and do a search. There's a lot of info there about it. Or buy a 5-speed and call it a day. Then you wouldn't have to have a custom cross member ether unlike going with the t-56. Adam :-)

You can build the clutch yourself if you needed to.. I was able to get a 5 spd out of a 90 z-28 to go behind my 4.3 on my 91 s-10, for $150.00 with clutch parts from advance and auto zone.Keep a few things in mind. Bellhousing size, clutch disk size, and input shaft spline count. The t-56 is used for many different applications, so a bellhousing should be readily available. Ask to go through a few clutch catalogs at your local advance auto parts to find what you need.

i looked around and a cheap t56 is basically nonexistant. so can anyone tell me what 5 speeds will hook up directly?
my tranny is leaking and its starting to get on my nerves. so i want to try and find a 5 speed i can throw in there for as cheap as possible.

Anything from that year range will work. Something out of a z-28 camaro. The cross member should need little to any modification.

make sure you get a clutch kit for the same type of vehicle you are using the trans from, that way spline count will be the same.
