So I haven't purchased speakers in quite a while so I am looking for some recommendations. I have a Macintosh 4X50 amp that I am using on the stockers and want some higher quality sound. I am looking to do seperates in the front since the tweeter is mounted high on the door. The back will just be a straight replacement. I'm looking to spend about $100 for each set. I already have subs so bass isn't too much of a concern but good range on the speakers would be ideal, maybe with a seprate crossover with them. What do you experts recommend?

Can you go active with that amp?

Yes, it does have an active crossover built into it, if that is what you mean.
Also, I can go more than $100 for each set, just don't want to go too crazy.

Actually yeah, i do like polks, don't like infinity all that much. Unless you don't like lows and midbass, get the infinity's, they're great for highs and upper midbass.
I get some of the best feedback from the JBL's. We have been installing them so much lately that I am going to stock their complete line in the next couple of months (as we blow out some of our other inventory). Their components provide a really clean sound all the way through the range and I haven't warrantied out any of their door speakers in at least a year or so. Infiniti's and Polks are okay also but the JBL's are more popular lately it seems however in that price range.

I think I have narrowed it down to the Polk's or the Alpine Type R's. Since the Type R's are a bit more than originally budgeting, I'll probably replace the front now and then replace the rears later on.

I have polk's 6.5's now front and rear without an amp pushing them, just off the head unit and they sound great. I'm very happy with them. I cant wait to hear what they sound like with a little bit of power behind them. I also owned a prelude a few years ago with type r 6.5's and that sounded awesome too, but I think the type r's sounded slightly better than the polks, but not by much.
Just an opinion. I would buy either of the 2. I have had good results with both.

If you are going with a set of components you wont need rear speakers if you have a sub. I would go with Diamond Hex , Rainbow, or zapco and you will have a nice sounding front stage. Car audio you truley get what you pay for. Your front stage is so important in you overall sound.
Yep, the JBL GTO series. Just put a set of the GTO627's (6.5" components) in the front of a 99 Sierra today (tweets in the B Pillars-no amp but it still sounds great). Also, GTO6427's 4X6 plates in the rear. Customer could not believe how much $250 (included all speakers and labor) worth of upgrade completely changed the stereo's sound. Now, wisely, we will be installing the Alpine 4X50 amp next week (smaller than JBL's equivalent and a few bucks cheaper-no difference in sound IMHO however). He can't wait to see the difference that will make. If you are about bang for the buck on a budget, I'll reiterate my vote on the JBL's...
