Hey all. haven't been on TR in a while. Mainly TF. Anyways, please point me in right direction. My engine started knocking a while back and I just parked car and let it sit. Like I was on my way home from work and this clack came from nowhere from the motor. Neighbors said it sounds like the rod bearings. I haven't drained the oil yet to see if metal shavings there but pulled the valve covers off and pushrods out. They straight. I think its something bottom end.
I'll pull the motor myself, but then what? Anyone here that could hook me up and come tear down motor with me tell me what it needs or should I take it to machine shop? How much $$ am I looking at for bringing someone the motor and asking them to rebuild it just to get it working. Nothing fancy, no further upgrades, just stop the clacking.
Any guidance? And thank you.

I wouldnt want anyone local to rebuild it. Look around on LS1 Tech. You can pick up a nice shorty for ~$3k.

I don't have that much. I just need to get by. Going through tough financial times.

I would check for the metal shavings first... that sucks man.
How many miles on the car?

The car has around 100k. Long story on why I don't know (EXACT) I'll probably drain some oil today. I even considered selling the car, and just fixing my bike. Some of you may have heard about my previous bike accident on here. Anyways, trying to fix this so if my beater car breaks down I have a backup to haul my 2 year old around in.
If someone has a stethoscope and knows about cars and is willing to check it out maybe this weekend I'll do something for you in return. Maybe computer wise? I can do most anything with computers. Build websites, program applications, anything I can do to help I will. I'm no idiot when it comes to cars, I can do anything, its a matter of figuring out wtf I have to do that is not my forte.

Pull the valve covers off and check the rockers.. "Cackling" is a sound more commonly associated with rockers coming off..
What is your oil pressure? What is your engine temp?
Also if cut open your oil filter and look for shavings at the bottom. The magnet wont catch the bearing shavings because they are not magnetic. The magnet will catch the rods/crank shavings that come off due to the fact that you spun a bearing..
A shop will charge you 1000 dollars to pull it out and 700 dollars in labor to put your top end on... plus you have the machine shop and parts cost.

I just picked up a motor tonight that was pulled because of a light bottom end knock. The guy I got it from told me that the o-ring in the oil pickup tube got a small tear in it, and the oil began to aerate, which caused it to stop lubricating all that well. I saw this little tear myself, and I'd be miffed if it was a little part like that causing all the problems, but I guess wierd things like that happen. Any of you guys heard of something like that?
This was from an '01 SS, a bit less than 100k.

I know 98-00 ls1's are notorious for oil pump problems
