the utec allows launch control as well as the new cobb

XPT maps also have lc.
does it have to be 2-step?
you can add launch control to your stock ECU easily. . .

for the mods im doin a hydra would be overkill. im not even goin over 300 hp (02 wrx hunk of junk). but its mine and fun to drive. when it gets running shoot me a pm let me know how it works out.

true, if he is going to have a nasty setup. if its just a basic setup, thats overkill. UTEC is good because it stores multiple maps, launch control, and few other cool options. can pick a unit for a decent price. the cobb has all those controls and alot more but you will also notice the price is a good amount more. the open source system can be used. not sure of the other options available but it is nice to not have to pay for it and can put that money towards some other mods. i dont have any experience with the open source so maybe someone else can chime in as far any other options you use.

it is more expensive but wouldnt call it overkill... they put them on a stock evo and made 70whp... you get a wideban and can control way more then open source and utec... also you can hook the hydra meth kit directly too it and control it through the hydra
im pretty sure everything you just said is exactly why it is overkill.
stick to openECU. its got everything you'll need for the car. and all it costs is the hourly rate of a tuner, which you have to pay anyway.

gaining hp is overkill hmmm always though that was the goal when modding a car... guess ive been going about it all wrong

I think what KAX is saying is that he can use the money he would spend on a Hydra and put it towards something else, like maybe suspension. Also w/ opensource you can learn to tune yourself which makes it easier when you do future mods.

you can tune yourself with hydra =) why cheap out on ecu when you dont have a cheap car? i havent bought one yet but thats in my near future

Hydra is for those making serious high hp unless you have max out the limits of the factory ecu it is better for daily driving to use the factory ecu.
The hydra can do speed density and control numerous other thing that are great but for most are just a little over the top.
honestly a utec using speed density combined with a factory ecu flash is probably one of the best all around setups.
Launch Control is a 2 step.
they released the ability to do this opensource a month ago for the 16bit ecus
and recently for some 32 bit ecus

yes gaining that much hp is overkill when he has a wrx (5spd) and he said all he wants to do is hit 300hp.

it is now out for usdm 04sti's. it costs $35 to get the program to patch the rom for the 32bit ecu's. The 16bit ecu's are free :D

wow, thats a huge gain! was this map a streetable map for everyday driving or was this something that would cause the motor to pop shortly after. 70whp is alot to pull out a car with no mods. pretty impressive

not too sure just read about it awhile back and its one of the main reasons i wanted one plus the two step and wideband
