i just turned 18 and im lookin to buy a 4th gen z28 this summer. where is the best place to look 4 a car like this and is their any common problems i should watch out for? also, wat would be a good starter mod for me to put in, i have a pretty restricted budget cause im goin to college but im pretty good bout turnin my own wrench so i shouldnt have to worry about the cost for labor... if anyone could help me thatd be great :)

As for places to buy them go to craigslist.com I see plenty of them on there every day. Autotrader is OK too, other than that keep your eye out in the little car lots. I found one the other day, 5 speed perfect, black on black, already slightly modded LS1 and it was 5k at this little shop up here.

No but a older woman in ger 40's is less likely to beat the shit out of and mod a Z28 then some 19 year old kid...Maybe you should use your head

I guess you really havnt met many older women that drive z28s. I know a ton that beat the shit out of them even if they didnt have anything done to them.

Are you thick headed or something? I know some women do mod and race their cars, But most women dont. Dont get all bent out of shape because I made a comment about how most women wont ever mod their cars. Just trying to help someone find the best deal.

To answer your question... just listen for the normal stuff -- any knocks on cold start up, ticking noises, whining rear end, blah blah blah..

As far as mods go.. It really depends on what you plan on doing with the car... daily driver or no? are you going to take it to the strip at all?

If it's a daily driver and taken to the track once in a while... I would go this route :

Air Lid - I got an SLP lid, like 99$ .. just a basic first mod

SFC's - Subframe connectors... I went with UMI 2-point weld ins for $150. It made the car stop flexing from all the torque, and just feels more sturdy, plus it maintains the integrity of your chassis -- especially if you have t-tops.

FTRA - Fast Toys Ram Air intake... this is pretty optional, but I felt gain from it.. got it for ~ $175..

Headers/Exhaust - I got QTP full length stainless headers, and did a 2.5" X over the axle with magnaflows.. cost me around $1300 including the exhaust shop labor, but I got a good deal. You could get some cheaper headers, like Pacesetters which are ceramic coated, and only cost around $400.. My QTP's were around $700, but that's up to you.

Tires - You're going to need these no matter what, you could even do them first.. I changed my stock 16" rims and 245 tires to some 17" rims with 315 Nitto555R :D makes a HUGE difference, you won't be able to break them lose without some decent power... I launch it at around 1800 and it hops once, then grips the whole time. Spent about $1300 on the tires/rims.

Gear - If you have a 6 speed, put in some 4.10's. It's a night and day difference. If you go with an auto, the usual is 3.73's ( i think ). My 4.10 along with a bunch of new parts to replace in the rear -- basic maintenance -- cost like $250

Shifter - I went with the 5.0 shifter and lou's short stick... feels much better than stock, and makes that 2-3 shift easy easy easy. Only $215 for them together.

Clutch - I just upgraded it to an LS7 clutch/flywheel because the previous owner burned mine up bad. Doesn't need to be done now, but eventually it will. Cost $400.

After all this, and a tune you'll have a pretty strong street car around 350-360HP, and will be in mid to low 12's in the quarter. There's a few different routes you can take from here.. I've opted to upgrade the suspension before adding anymore power, to eliminate the minor wheel hop I'm getting. Then I'll be able to launch from a littler higher RPM without any slip/hop.

I'm going with strano lowering springs / koni shocks.. and some other various suspension parts ( haven't figured it out exactly yet).

Then from there, you have the intake manifold/throttle body. And either go with heads/cam package, anywhere from $2400 - $4000+ depending on what heads you want. You could get anywhere from 420HP to low 500's depending on the specs of the cam, and the heads you choose and the tuning.

OR....

You can go F/I. This will be a little more expensive than heads/cams, but ultimately you'll see more power going this route.. Really up to you.

^Pretty much sums it up. Although I had a loud lifter on startup for over 10k miles/2 years and it didn't effect anything. I was the fastest LT1 at the strip in stock trim!
