View Full Version : Hot start problems!!
Well my latest addition is an 88 Supra Turbo. Not exactly a hot rod (yet) but it gets around.. I need something to drive while the RX-7 goes under the knife.
Anyway it needs its TPS set which is no big deal. What is a big deal though is its hot starting problem. Once the car is warmed up itll turn over but never catch. I can still push start it warm and it starts cold with no problem but the damn thing wont start on its own when its hot!!! :( Makes getting gas exciting..
Any ideas would be appreciated...

 what are you planning to do?
are you gonna keep the supra? i am actually looking into getting a supra turbo? it is a stick?
please let me know thanx :eek::eek::eek:
Id like to keep the car but Ill have to see how much time I have to work on it.
Im starting to think it may be a leaky or faulty injector. Or maybe something with the injector wiring. This weekend Im going to spend some time with it and try to clean things up a bit..
Its tough to push start an automatic! (Yeah its a stick.. :D)

well to me it sounds like your starter is getting heat sychned that will often cause that problem.

Youre probably right! After a little more research I discovered there is a clutch in the starter. And the symptom thats dying is when the starter turns but doesnt engage the engine. Ah-ha....!
Thanks for the idea.. Im going to personally support some local Toyota dealers parts department now..

It would seem I have the same problem with my 22RTE. I have often wondered if it was the starter.. allthough it only happens when it has been sitting for over 3 hours and still warm.. Fires right up in the morning though.
After 3 hours its pretty close to being cool again isnt it? And itll start warm if its less than that? That is kind of odd..
Unfortunately theres no way that I know of to test the clutch inside the starter. If replacing it actually works though Ill consider myself very lucky (and buy a lotto ticket or two).
Ill let you know if it works for me but it could easily be a couple of weeks. Im going to order a metal head gasket and maybe the HKS valve springs just for fun and install those..

That damn thing stays warm for a long ass time... I dont know why it does that. My temp gauge is faulty I think It does wierd things like goes right up to operating temp after firing it up in the morning. But After 3 hours it is still warm though. strange. I may have to try the starter thing since it wont be too hard to change. I might as well do that. let me know how yours works out.
