This was listed in another forum, but as I'm an attention whore, I decided to repost it here. :mullet:

Bought this car off of a forum member back in '06. As purchased it was a 4 cylinder converted to a 302. It had chrome cobra Rs and leather '95 seats.

As she was when I brought her home:

http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k117/pirlhart/Jackson112Medium.jpg

Shortly after getting her home, I did the following upgrades

Suspension

MM FL subframes
MM strut tower
UMI upper/lower torque box plates
Eibach drag springs with rear airbag
Pro3i upper and lower CAs
'93gt front spindles with 5 lug powerslot rotors
'95 rear axle, 31 spline axles, FMS 3.73 gears, 5 lug discs
Weld Prostars: 15x4 with skinnies, 15x8 275/50 M/T ET Streets
Strange 10 way adjustable shocks/strutsAfter suspension upgrades and Prostars with Big'n'littles

Let if like that for a little bit and then had Chad at Racing Innovations upgrade the fuel system

Fuel System

Custom fuel rails
FMS 42lb injectors
Glenn's Performance 950hp system
Street sleeper sumped tank
Dual Walbro 255lph inlines
NHRA approved fuel lines
Fuel system installed by Chad at www.racinginnovationsfl.com (http://www.racinginnovationsfl.com)

I decided to go 351 stroker for the motor. I waffled a lot on exactly what I wanted to do and how much money I wanted to dump into this project. Originally I was going to go budget with a '69-'74 block with cast internals and Procomp heads. After purchasing the Procomp 210s and talking to my engine builder, I decided to commit a little more money, but since I already had the procomps I made the decision (Bad or not, we'll see in the end) to have them worked by Greg at XSRcylinderheads.

Engine

Dart Sportsman Block 4.125 bore
Procomp 210s now 215s with 64cc chambers worked by XSRcylinderheads
FMS victor jr intake converted to EFI also worked by XSRcylinderheads
Camshaft innovations custom hyd. roller (.623/.609 236.11/253.9 109/114)
Eagle forged internals 0 balanced
JE SRP 19cc dished pistons (10.419:1 compression)
Stainless 1.6 roller rockers
PMAS 95mm "Velocity" mass air meter
Anderson 4" powerpipe
Accufab 90mm TB
FMS 42lbs injectors
Canton 7qt oil panExhaust

Mac 1 3/4" x 3" long tubes
Mac 3" Prochamber
Dynomax 3" ultra flow turndowns
Pile'o'parts

Motor arrived from Rick at www.rnhperformance.com (http://www.rnhperformance.com)

At this point, I just need to get all the stuff over to Chad so he can get started on the install. Will post up more info as things progress.

Chad got her fired up. Good oil pressure, lot of valve train noise. He pulled the valve covers and the rockers were misaligned on the valves, which is something I've heard reported on the Procomp heads. Ordered some adjustable guides, which are on backorder. Also some rubbing pushrods which he will be doing some clearancing.

I would at least like to get the miles on the motor with the procomps to make it to a dyno tuning session to see what it puts down before ditching them for a set of AFR/TFS heads.

once we get the geometry sorted out i think they will be ok...i had talked to greg about these style heads a couple years ago when they first came out...a ported set of pro-somps compared to an equivalent set of ported victor jrs were only about a 30hp difference advantage for the victor jrs...but a a set of high ports in the future would be pretty nasty...lol

I believe someone on the corral had posted some pictures of the misalignment as well. I should take a look for those and see if it is exactly the same. I've found several posts that mention it, and I have to assume that most if not all of the Procomps have this misalignment flaw. I wonder how many are unaware and not correcting the problem.

***EDIT: Here are the pics and the thread from the corral of someone else with the same misalignment and the pics of what another guy did buy cutting and rewelding the guideplates.

Absolutely not. I knew there were a lot of problems with them, and I knowingly went ahead with the purchase. However, I really never expected to have basically unusuable heads after all the work I've had done to them. I figured I would get them all fixed up, put the car on the dyno, and see what I got. I would then run them for a while and ultimately switch out to different heads. Maybe it will still happen that way, but I don't think so. I bought these heads in January of '07 and I they still aren't sorted out.

How much $$ do you have into them now? I snooped around the Chevy websites and they have alot of problems with the Procomp LS1 heads. They even did a Dyno run on some they put alot of money into and they were out-performed by a set of ported stock heads.

A lot for what they are. $500 bare, $800 of port work, ~$400 in springs, locks, retainers, valves.

So about $1700 plus the adjustable guide plates, new pushrods that were needed, and at this point they are being pulled tomorrow to have them looked at to see if the misplaced stud holes can be relocated.

Leaning more towards a set of Victor Jr.'s instead of the Canfields, however, I would probably buy a set from whoever I am going to have port them. Maybe a group buy on some Foxlake/TEA/XSR Stg II Victor Jrs? :nerd:

Interested to see what they say about the heads. Not sure about the group buy since historically all the ones I've been involved in have taken a lot of time to get set up and finalized and then dealing with someone like TEA/Fox Lake who probably has 3-4 weeks turn around time at best..... I just want to drive the turd :)

Rookie
08-04-2008, 03:38 PM
btw, TEA quoted 10-14 days turnaround for a set of heads. After 15 years of dealing with this kind of stuff, I figure that equates to about 3 months "real-world" time?

Going to give the Procomps one more shot.
Chad had the rocker stud holes essentially relocated to correct the geometry problem.

Ran into a problem with getting a replacement link-bar lifter to match the set that was in the motor.

Shooting for having the car running by this weekend and hopefully on the road early next week to see how much farther these Procomps are going to take us down the proverbial rabbit's hole.

Lifters are back, heads are back, hurricane will probably be holding things up...

Just to rewind. In an earlier post, Chad posted a picture of a lifter missing one of the retaining clips. He got a replacement CompCam lifter through SPW who sent the defective lifter back to CompCams to be warrantied. The new lifter had a completely different retaining clip, and when Chad called CompCams, they said no change to design was made. I ended up sending the other 7 lifters back to CompCams who replaced them.....with 7 lifters that look exactly like the one Chad received, that is with a completely different retaining clip. Strange.

Pictures of the difference.

Chad says she is running great after he swapped out to a different temporary balancer. It had an externally balanced balancer on it instead of the internal one that it required. Engine builder has ordered the correct balancer and will be sending it ASAP. Probably a few weeks to get the whole thing sorted out. Will f/u when updates are available.

Just waiting on a balancer. And whatever the next problem is to present itself.

It is currently fitted with the Procomp heads. At some point, I will be changing them, but probably not until after I get a new transmission and a tubular K-member. Right now, I am just having a blast driving it around. My wife is sick of me asking if she needs me to run any errands. and the neighbors are probably sick of it too. I've put more miles on the car in 2 days than I had in the last year.

I won't have the dyno graph until Chad picks the car up and scans it in to the computer. Reported to make good power though.....

It'll keep my entertained for now. Much better than the 229rwhp it was putting down with the 302. I still plan on putting a different set of heads on after a bunch of other stuff.

Im sure there is some good power with a better set of heads. But yeah Im sure it still a blast to drive

tuning was done by Rob over at Ford Speed. He says it actually made 467rwhp but something about converting it from his computer to the WinPEP7 changes the numbers.

Felt pretty good before dyno tuning, so I'm interested to see if I notice a difference when I get her back.

there will be a big difference in drivability and top end power...makes me wonder how fast my renegade ar would have ran with dyno tuning and chipwork...
