Any of you guys that weld have any home remedies for when you burn the shit out of your eyes????

Had to weld something for a customer last night that needed done asap so I either:

A: Welded too much too fast and I dont weld all that much so my eyes arent trained for it.

or

B: My autodarkning helmet is fucked up

I woke up in the middle of the night and felt like someone threw sand in my fuckin eyes. I have been warned about this many times but has never happened till now. I was always careful. Weld a little take a break then weld a little more.

I know some of you hard core welders are gonna blast me for using the autodark helmet but thats what I prefer. But then again it a no name fuckin pos helmet. Might be time to spring for the Miller.

So needless to say lights and sun and I arent getting along today. The girl is layin into me to go to the doctors but I am like why I can still see just hurts. All they are gonna do is take my money and give probably eye drops. Save me money, anyone got any tips. It doesnt really hurt its just annoyin as hell. Or do I just have to wait this out and let them heal on their own?

I am sitting in ths shop with all the lights turned off so if anyone stops by today and they open the door dont freak out I am here I am just hiding in the dark somewhere lol.

i still close my eyes for a mili second just before i start the arc especially with a cheap auto dark helmet. And the more expensive auto dark helmets have a quicker response time then the el cheapo's. i had a nice flash burn a few years back but i never did anything about it. My eyes were just sensitive to light for about 36-48 hours

but the word on the grapevine is you can use the same treatment for this as you would glaucoma ;)

Hi Dave! Potato slices man! Potato slices....The starch in them takes the burn out of the eyes. They'll be feeling better in a few hours if you use them. I have had this happen more times than I care to count, and thats what I use every time.

I have been told that anything cold and wet with a light pressure on the eye will help... but quick cheap help is visine or potato slices seem to be pretty common for some reason... and try to keep your eyes closed as long as possible... I.e. rest... sleep.. and avoid rapid eye movement... (no tv, or watching races.. etc.. etc.. )

My 2¢

this is something you only fuck up once! you will make SURE not to do it again. I'm with smokeshow about the cold shit. Feels like someone backed a dump truck up to your face and unloaded in your eyes.

not sure about the too much or too fast thing. you should to be able to weld all you want a proper functioning helmet.

A rule of thumb I was told... when welding at night make sure there is enough light...

It is usually due to things behind you. Like a white wall, or a silver wall such as a corugated steel or tin wall, or white drywall. Those things reflect the ultra-violet rays right back into the back (open) side of your welding hood. It then reflects right back into your eyes off of your lens. You get a double wammy when your auto-lens has dying batteries or is set too slow.

BINGO! thats how I got it...reflection off of a bumper inside the helmet.

You don't have to be looking directly in to the arc to be affected

There is really nothing that will help but time. I would wear dark glasses even inside when I got flash burn and keep them moistureized w/visine.
As far as the going to the doctor... I wanted to kill him, had me open eyes real wide and the looked inside with some type of scope with a bright yellow light, that sucked ass!!! Hurt worse when I left then when I got there.

Change the batteries. I never have any problems when I use "my" helmet... Maybe its time to buy your own damn helmet.

And stop being a little bitch. I welded today with no helmet Eyes don't hurt that bad.

:corn: :hide: My vision has gone south since I quit welding. When I joined the military, I had 20/20. Now I have a hard time seeing the damn street signs. And I never had an electric hood. I always used a shade 10 gold lens. I guess it's just the way it works....If you weld on a regular basis, you're going to get bad eyes. They were fine until about 4 years ago....I'm only 37 now...:-o

I was told that the drastic differences in light is what makes it worse... like walking out in the sunlight after being a movie for 3 hours... makes your eyes hurt... sort of the same principle...
