This is the contest talk thread for the March 2008 contest. Feel free to ask questions, discuss techniques and call people out.
Do not bring any drama, complaints or whining into this thread. If you have specific concerns you can PM them to me (.:Chris:.), DareDevil or Green_Lantern for consideration. If you post them here they will be laughed at, deleted and most importantly: ignored.
Good luck to everyone, people seem excited about this topic. This should be a good one.

budakinns
03-01-2008, 04:54 PM
what pic on the left? Have fun in Denmark
03AcuraCLTypeS
03-01-2008, 05:04 PM
in the thread where u post up your entrys there are 2 pics side by side i take it were going for the one on the left
.:Chris:.
03-01-2008, 07:32 PM
Yes, the one on the left has shallow focus. The one on the right isn't incredibly deep, but it illustrates the point. Go for the one on the left.
Hoosier Daddy
03-01-2008, 07:39 PM
Wait... you can call people out? Yet it says NO Drama? lmao
EDIT: I dont get the DOF thing... do you mean when we do upclose do you want more things visible or less? The explanation is on DOF... not "Shallow" DOF lol
budakinns
03-01-2008, 07:42 PM
ahh you did a ninja edit. yeah its not that hard to do. try taking AF off and mess around with MF learn it a bit.
Hoosier Daddy
03-01-2008, 07:45 PM
Lol sorry about that. But seriously, the examples that you found... which image is "Shallow" DOF? The left or right one of the newspaper?
Michael.
03-01-2008, 09:52 PM
chris, i have a few of my grill shots and lens cap shots here:
Lens Cap Whereabouts - a photoset on Flickr (http://www.flickr.com/photos/mjl4/sets/72157603915461354/)

Michael.
03-01-2008, 09:55 PM
the left
i'm gonna be in on this one FOR SURE this time...i wasnt feeling creative enough to go out and do the other themes, but since my 50 1.8 is on my camera just about all the time i should be set...or something at a long focal length (300mm f5.6)
budakinns
03-01-2008, 11:23 PM
damn i cant wait till next week should have my 50mm 1.8 by then... i hope

03-02-2008, 08:28 PM
their the same concept? no? ^
i didnt think it meant that it had to be a macro shot :dunno:
Chris C.
03-02-2008, 08:34 PM
^ True.
Both of those photo's classify as having a "Shallow DOF". A shallow DOF is not reserved for Macro composition. Macro photography only utilizes a shallow DOF more so than any other type of shot. That, and some landscape photography.
03AcuraCLTypeS
03-02-2008, 08:48 PM
so its basically focusing on a subject with a blurred background....ummm i can have some fun with this one...i think i got a couple good ideas...i hope
Hoosier Daddy
03-02-2008, 09:23 PM
See, thats why I was getting confused. I thought it was just for Macro so I thought why wouldn't it be a Macro contest? lol.
So the whole idea is to get something focused and in detail, while the items that aren't supposed to be focused on just fade out... like this...?
http://i217.photobucket.com/albums/cc213/rebelgfx/IMG_5366copy.png
.:Chris:.
03-02-2008, 09:32 PM
1.) It absolutely doesn't have to be a macro picture.
2.) Btuner and MGB, your pics both show selective focus.
3.) 03AcuraCL, blurred foreground AND/OR background. A good entry will likely fade all the way from out of focus to in focus and back to out of focus.
4.) HD, yes, like that. The only reason I mentioned macro is because that's the easiest way to get shallow focus for the point and shoot guys.
Mama Got Boost??
03-02-2008, 09:33 PM
Cool....
Hoosier Daddy
03-02-2008, 09:42 PM
Oh... I have this contest in the bag then.
Chris C.
03-02-2008, 09:56 PM
To HD: Technically your right. Bigger apertures will have the signature soft background, but I think the point of the contest is to exaggerate the effect...
Maybe Something like this...

Just upload it as the original size then pick the different size through flickr.

Most people will just choose any old pic with limited depth of field and submit it, but there will be a select few (hpoefully) that really get it and come through with some great stuff.
People seem very unsure about it, and I really don't know how to explain it any better than it has been explained.

what is the April contest???
or could it be that we will change it up and have it on the 1-15th????
Also, just to double check. Any picture larger than 800 on its largest side is automatically disqaulified right?
Michael.
04-01-2008, 11:05 AM
yeah and is the March one closed then?
.:Chris:.
04-01-2008, 12:03 PM
I realize that it gets boring with such a long time-span, but we don't usually get as many participants as we did in March.
April's theme will be decided shortly. I'm going to start the voting as soon as I can, then we'll get on to starting the next contest. It won't be long.
.:Chris:.

Yeah, if you want me to be stringent I'll be stringent. Unfortunately that means your last entry will be canned because it was submitted after midnight. :(

as we disscussed befor... it wasnt midnight west coast time... and the thread wasnt locked...
but i am in a whole differant part of the world so i have no idea what the time differance is to the east coast, i am 9 hours ahead of the west coast, i think, lol.
but i think the rules should be firm. who ever is the main mod for the contest should decide. and i will support that dision.

Come on man, you know I can't enforce some rules and not others. This is tamparacing.com, we operate on Eastern Standard Time regardless of where you are. Whether the thread was locked or not is not relevant, it's the March contest and you posted in April.
I really hate being the bad guy in situations like this.
Michael.
04-01-2008, 04:22 PM
nevermind i see that its closed.
when will the polls be up!? lol
i'm anxious for the next contest now!
BrewPuBeaver
04-01-2008, 04:23 PM
i dont mind, lol. it is your desion to make. and i will support it caus eyour a mod, not me.
but on a differant note. the contest would run a lot smoother, and faster the way i proposed it. specialy with more than 10 people... it eliminates the whole voting threads and such....
.:Chris:.
