View Full Version : 93-98 Supra TT - Why big gap in prices?

I see some are being sold for around 12-15k while others are being sold for 20-40k... I know mileage, transmission and condition all matter but similar conditions with similar mileage are being sold for much less... Why is this?

You pretty much answered your own question in your first post. It's about condition, mileage, turbo vs non turbo, auto vs 6 speed. There's not really anything secretive about it. There's no "Type R" model or anything like that. Most of the high dollar Supras you're probably seeing are the 97-98's which are the last years made here in the US.
A mint condition, turbo, low mileage 98 will fetch WAY more than a built 93-94 just about any day.

I was thinking it was because of the JDM engines VS Original engines...

Basic rundown here.
-A little less than these prices is most likely high mileage, poor condition, or an unclean title (salvage, theft, rebuilt, wrecked).
-Much cheaper than these is a scam 99% of the time.
-Hardtops are a bit more desireable, and downright RARE if it's a turbo model, and will usually be about 1K higher than a similar targa NA, and about 7K higher than a similar targa TT.
-'97-'98s had some quality and appearance changes, and also are generally in better shape and a little lower mileage, and will fetch 5-10K higher than a similar '93-'96 car.
-Quicksilver, Royal Sapphire Pearl (aka RSP, a blue color), and Anthracite (aka MSB, a brown color), are, in that order, the three colors that fetch the highest premiums, due to rarity and demand. Color can add anywhere from 5-30K to a car's value, compared to a standard color (red, black, white being the most common).
-Interiors were either black or tan. Black is MUCH more desireable than tan, and can add anywhere from 1K-5K to a car's value, but you can get fresh black leather for the seats and brand new OEM black carpet for $1500, give or take, so I always advise against this being a selling point.
-As mentioned, mileage is a major factor. At any given time, you can expect the Supra market to vary in mileage from 20K-175K miles. For any mileage under 50K, it's nearly impossible to say how it affects the price, since at that point it's really worth whatever people are willing to pay.
-Build quality and extent is the most obvious factor. Widebodies will add 8-20K, depending on how custom it is. Performance work can add anywhere from 1K-50K, depending on the extent of the build.
-Bone stock down to the air filter and wheels can add anywhere from 2K to 50K to the value of a car, depending on the other factors (year, mileage, color, NA/TT).
9-15K = NA auto
13-18K = NA 5sp
15-22K = NA-T Auto
18-28K = NA-T 5sp/6sp
17-25K = TT Auto
22-30K = TT 6sp
24-30K = T Auto
25-35K = T 6sp
That's a basic enough guide to get you started. There's a TON of fluctuation because Supras are owned under several income brackets.
Supras are popular among college kids who are making just enough to make the payments, or who got the car from their parents, but they can't afford to mod it much themselves. These are the 15-30K Supras that are on the lower end due to being NA, auto, BPU, or just a relatively low-budget build.
Supras are also owned by 6-figure middle-aged men and even a couple celebrities, or other people who park their Supra next to a new Lexus, Porsche, Viper, or exotic. These are the Supras that start at 40K and can reach into the 100K mark. These are low-mileage, show-stopping kitted cars with 700-1400HP and more money in wheels and tires than some of those college kids bought their NA Supras for.
I'll tell you this, there is a small gap somewhere in the 35-40K range where there aren't that many Supras, because this is about the point that divides the boys from the men in terms of budgets.
-Quicksilver, Royal Sapphire Pearl (aka RSP, a blue color), and Anthracite (aka MSB, a brown color), .
MSB = Monkey Shit Brown

It was a pure bread sports car with 14 turbos and two giant leather rear-mounted cupholders produced by Toyota from 1993-2002 (sold from 1993-1998 in the US). It was produced instead of (not in replacement of) the MKIII, which was an outgoing higher end Celica, featuring power leather seats that added 1.5 tons to the base Celica's weight. The Supra makes approximately 1400BHP for a brief second from 7000-7200 RPMs.
Everything gets blurry between 7000 and 7200 rpms

Yeah, it's basically Toyota's version of VTEC, but the Supra was never as fast as VTEC. VTEC, son.

i have 2 vtec's! The first one spools the 2nd but I am going to true vtec conversion because I broke my seq vtec setup. :( I was running 18 pounds of vtec but I ran out of fluid.
