It's easy! Just take apart a lens and your camera. ;)

(Borrowed from link)

Add on-board light metering to your Nikon D40 - Hack a Day (http://www.hackaday.com/2008/02/27/add-on-board-light-metering-to-your-nikon-d40/)

The hackaday article is pretty flawed (obviously the D40 has metering built in) but the link that it includes is interesting. btuner and all of you other D40 guys... jump on this!

lol no thanks! i like my camera working! i can just someone reading that, going and trying it and then the next day their camera stops working lol. not really sure what its supposed to do anyways? i don't use the older lenses, so i guess i dont have to worry about it.

Well the older lenses don't have metering hardware inside, because the older cameras had it inside. The newer lenses have metering hardware inside, so the camera doesn't need it.

If you want to use an old lens then you'd have to a) use manual b) get a D200 or higher which has the appropriate hardware c) do this hack.

That's my take on it anyway. I'm not completely up to speed because, as you said, my "old" lenses aren't that old. I use a 70-210 F4-5.6 that's from 1990ish, it meters just fine.
