I am in the market for a video camera, went to both circuit city and best buy last night to see what they had to offer. Half of circuit city's cameras we not working and the person behind the counter did not know what they were talking about which did not help at all. Best buy had the same cameras as Circuit City and after playing with them I was impressed by the Canon HG10 they had there. The temptation was there but I decided to go home and do a little more research online before I jumped into a video camera without knowing much about what I was getting as I am a newbie to video.

I came across the Canon XH-A1 which impressed the hell out of me. I came across a website which people posted samples of their work with the XH-A1 and it is purely amazing. I like the fact that some of these people have never had experience either with a camera and their videos came out phenomenal. Website is here: XH A1 Sample Clips - The Digital Video Information Network (http://www.dvinfo.net/conf/forumdisplay.php?f=143)

I am partial to Canon if you guy's can't tell by now. :)

I have two HD cams a good high quality one and a cheap one.

My good cam is the Canon XH-A1 your looking at. It’s the same cam used for shooting had held sections of reality tv shows such as real world, tila tequila, etc... it was suggested to me by my cousin (director for mtv) to shoot video where i wanted it to be high quality.

My cheap one is a Aiptek hd
Buy the Aiptek A-HD HD Camcorder - Blue and other Camcorders at circuitcity.com (http://www.circuitcity.com/rpsm/oid/189266/rpem/ccd/productDetail.do)
It’s fun for shooting drunken excursions where the xh-a1 might be damage. It shoots a pretty good quality video runs off a memory card, very easy to use, and fits in your pocket.

Kirk - Canon fan myself - I write for Canon Camera Buzz which rounds up all the Canon conversation on the web - although I admit my true love is the HG10. Did you decide which one to go for?

I haven't had much of a chance to play with the XH-A1 though it sounds good from what you've said here; has anyone had a chance to make a comparison with the HG10? I'd be interested to know the relative pros and cons...

I haven't been able to play with a XH-A1 yet but I am leaning more towards it from what I have read so far and the videos I have seen. I would love to see a comparison between the HG10 and the XH-A1 personally as well. When I get home from work I will look up some videos and samples from the HG10. Welcome to the site!

Whens it comes to photographs stick with Cannon. But when it comes to video Id go Sony all the way. Theres ones for every price range.

Hi Kirk, thanks for the welcome. Without sounding like a big fat spammer, my blog collects lots of HG10 conversations, reviews, and stuff people have created using the cams on the web - if you want to see what others think of it.

Be great to see some comparisons here though and I've pointed my readers towards this thread in case they have experience of both cams and can give us some kind of one-on-one...

Anyone ever taken their Canon racing?

Wow, Kirk and Hater are famous. It seems funny to read a quote from someone named 'Hater' on a serious blog.

I appreciate the help Holly, I will check over the site when I get home tonight and do a little more research on the HG10 before I take the "leap" up (price wise) to the XH-A1. I normally shoot my events with a Canon 20D but I would like to actually gather some good video footage now, I am the type that does not settle for anything short of amazing. I appreciate the help, thanks!
