I drove home the other night in my black car (2.0 n/t). I removed the key from the ignition and the engine was still running. It ran for about two-three seconds before puttering out. I think it reved slightly as soon as I removed the key. I thought it jumped time. And, when I tried to start it, it turned over a number of times without starting. I tried again, and it sputtered. I tried once more and it started, but ran poorly. It increases in RPMs slowly and idles at around 600 rpms (it was idling at ~ 1000 RPMs). I've had no issues with driveability for the last 30,000 miles.
Troubleshooting:
I pulled each injector plug, one at a time, to see if a cylinder was down. None were. I also checked all plug connections - all were good. Finally, I have no CEL.
I checked compression - roughly 185 across the board.
I noticed that all the plugs were really white, though, and the #4 cylinder plug had a few carbon deposits on it. The other three did not.
I replaced the power transistor - nothing.
I replaced the CAS - nothing.
I still don't have a CEL.
Also, today was the first day I've driven the car since it dieseled and then wouldn't initially start. It drives horribly. It barely accelerates and seems to only have a power band between 2k and 3k. Also, when I open the throttle quickly (completely) from under the hood, I here a deep chugging tone from the intake and it doesn't intake anything for about one second (it sounds like it's bogging), and then it begins to accelerate (at a slightly slower rate than normal).
I don't think that it's a vacuum leak. I've pulled all vacuum lines and capped the intake manifold and throttle body and nothing changes. Plus, it happened instantaneously. The car was running/driving fine for 30,000 miles over four years. I never had any driveability issues. Then, I drive home from work (no problems), park the car and pull the key - it diesels. It won't start immediately, and when it finally does, it runs horribly. This wasn't something that got progressively worse. It just happened.
Having no CEL and perfect compression is making it difficult to diagnose.
The only idea I have at the moment is that the idler pulley or tensior pulley is going and something happened when I stopped the engine that night. I haven't tore down the t-belt side of the motor yet. If no one has any other ideas, I'll be doing that tomorrow morning.
