View Full Version : Blank canvass, where to put front speakers?

So I'm running this car with no dash and can mount the speakers anywhere I want (don't mind the rust). Where is the best spot for the front CDT 6 1/2" components and separate tweeters?
I know most people have pods at the kick panels, but since I don't have any real restrictions I'm open for ideas.
I don't need to know about sound deadening, the don't do its, the why bothers, and all the bullshit etc, just the best mounting spots.
Thanks.

Example, which spot is better.
I would assume you would want the speakers mounted higher, but most factory interiors don't have that option so you have to settle with the doors or pods on the floor.
I'm obviously not looking for an audiophile set up, but I figured I'd want to mount the speakers in the best spot since I can.
Thoughts? There has to be some stereo experts in here.

Your doing components and serparate tweets? Why? Go active and put the speakers and axis with pods ontop of the dash and kicks down in the bottom for 8s.

In the doors with proper angling for drivers perception. The goal being the greatest stereo separation possible.

The goal should actually be equal path lengths, or as close as possible. And its more a ratio, than actual difference.
For example, if the passenger speaker is 4 feet away from you, and the drivers speaker is 2, that is a 2:1 ratio, and would be typical of door speakers. Now, if you go with kick panels, say, the drivers speaker moves to 3 feet away, while the passenger speaker stays at about 4. Now, it is a 4:3 ratio, and will image much better. The idea is to have the sound from each speaker reach you at about the same time. Ideally, you do this for both the driver and the passenger, but work on the drivers imaging first, as there is always a driver :-)
Wherever you decide to mount them, make sure the baffle is solid, and the enclosure volume is correct for the driver you choose. I'd also recommend keeping the tweeter within 6 inches of the woofer if possible.
Since you have a blank canvas, you could look at something like this...

Cool, that was what I was looking for. Thanks.
If thats they will fit here with mounting pods I'll make out of fiberglass.

Problem is, passenger kickpanel is more than 4ft. so are you saying go with one kickpanel and one dash speaker?

No, if you actually measure from the drivers ear, to the kick panel on the passenger side, you'll see that it is not much farther away than the door location. On the other hand, the drivers kick panel is 50%+ farther away from the drivers ear than the door location.

Thats what we came up with for measurements. I think ill take the separation and better angle over the marginal difference.
Drawing is not to scale.
