i have a quick question though, what are the regulations as in speed and all that? like is it a closed course where we can go over the speedlimit if need be or is it open where we have to follow the posted speed limits?
treekiller
12-04-2007, 08:02 PM
they are on public roads, so it is *recommended* you follow any posted speed limits If you want all out close course we have the rallycross coming up on 12/22/07 at east bay speedway.. Road rallies are more of a challenge of not only the driver but a navigator. you are given a few "rules" to follow and a set of rally instructions that if folowed correctly will keep you on the perfect route. mess up and the clock does not stop.

I don't know, even if I did know, I couldn't tell you. Knowing Loren it's going to be fast anf difficult. but that is only a guess. I'm not the rallymaster the event, I'm only the registrar, Head Pimp.

I don't get how this is going to be "fast and difficult", but still on public roads.

Wouldn't you know that I'm working on editing the instructions for this rally at this very moment?
Jeff has posted this link before in another thread, but it hasn't made it into this one yet. It's a really good source for information on TSD rallying:
Welcome to TSDRoadRally.com - Road Rally News and Information: HOME (http://www.tsdroadrally.com)
To answer your questions:
The "speed limits" are whatever the speed limit is for the road you are on. No, you can't speed, that would be illegal! We can't advocate that.
The tricky part is that, in addition to the speed limits imposed by the government, each section of the rally has a stated calculated average speed or "CAS". The CAS for a section might be 35 mph... but it often includes stop signs, turns, stop lights, and other obstacles that will make it difficult to maintain that AVERAGE speed of 35 mph, even if the typical speed limit of that section is 45.
How do you win? There's the challenge. You win by following the route instructions and not getting lost AND keeping up with the CAS such that you arrive at each checkpoint at exactly the right time. Not the fastest... the penalty for being early is the same as for being late.
A TSD Rally is not a race. It's all about attention to detail and accuracy. That's not to say we won't find some interesting roads for you to drive on! But you don't have to break any laws to win.
that should clear up a lot of confusion on the syle of event this is.

I think the concept of average speed is eluding some people. If you've ever driven an autocross, a typical run can be anywhere around a min for 1/2 a mile. if you graduated 2nd grade math your brain at this point would be telling you.. crap that's only a 30mph average. now throw in stop signs, radically curvy roads and a 40mph CAS and things get very interesting. for example if you can average just 60mph on sebring that is a decent 4:10 lap time. and there are no stop signs, or speed limits there.
These are extreme examples but I hope you get the point.
No we cannot advocate breaking the speed limit, and no cas can be set at a speed higher then that limit. that is why by law they require us to have time allowances, in the old days if you got lost, or stuck you had to MAKE UP the time. while we cannot require that, many of our entrants choose not to use time allowances. (that is how performance rally was formed) the average speeds were imposable to achieve and the closest car (being the fastest car) would get the lowest score. since then Bogey times have been outlawed in the USA, you can still find Drive-X bogey rallies in Canada and Mexico.
Here is a video from the Guys that build the best rally computers in the world ALFA ALFA Rally Computers - Small Systems Specialists (http://www.rally.cc)
YouTube - We Suck Less! A road rally music video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HR8rmTaRbDk)
That is a TSD rally, notice no helmets, no roll cages. no problems.
