SO.. I have been looking online to try to figure this out but I have gotten no where. There are sometimes when the radio turns on the the amp will turn off abruptly causing a loud popping sound. It tends to happen more when it is warm outside, because early mornings and late nights it is very rare. A little info on the set up, it is a 4 channel amp hooked up to only the 6 speakers, no subs. In between the amp and the speakers there are audiobahn boxes that were described to me as micro-amplifiers basically... is that what they really are I doubt it. But the connections go from the amp to these two 5x5inch audio bahn boxes then to the speakers, which are audiobahns as well.
My question is.. why is the amp turning off and how do I stop it?
Yes it is grounded, no the ground and power aren't touching, I have them surrounded by electrical tape and I am planning to have the connection sodered but want to make sure I figure this out. It is really getting annoying. Please help!
4 channel amp into 6 speakers?
Did you consider the fact that you may have wired it improperly?
How DID you wire it up? Pictures and very detailed explanations would help.

also sounds like you might have a problem with you remote on

Yeah i did consider that I wired it incorrectly.. LOL trust me I don't know too much.. I could describe the wiring better if I new what those other boxes were. i will try to take pics tomorrow in the light and I'll post them up.
As for the remote on, I actually thought that could be it so I took the entire wire out and re ran it... still happened.
Should I be using a different amp, I took it to circuit city and the guy who check it out said it was wired properly and that I needed to keep the 4 channel.

do you know what I am describing because if you know what they are I'd love to figure it out.
yeah I bought the car with the set-up it has except i had to add the amp because the guy took out the amp and the cd changer.. i just recently replaced the head unit but even before that I had the same problem

If you have component speakers, they are the crossovers that filter the bass from the tweeters and the highs from the midrange.
Now that I think about it, the problem is with the turn on lead being powered before the headunit is. Where do you have the turn on lead connected?

But that doesn't explain why it only happens sometimes.. wouldn't it always happen if it was the turn on lead? I'm really close to just unhooking the crossover things and rewiring it all straight back into the head unit.

is the 'crossover thing' a line out converter or an eq of sorts?
i had tons of probelms with my old legacy crossover/eq ditched it and used the amps eq and everything sounded a ton better. my problem with popin occured bc my amp did not have a soft on and it had a very soft on so the amp would kick on and then a second later the eq would kick on making a pop. soft on is a delay on which is supose to get ride of the pops
hope that makes sence...

It does explain it.
it does it when the amp is powered up before the headunit is - possibly when you turn the radio on after the car is already running...

You could make a jumper, from the B+ input to the amp, to the turn on input (unhook whatever you have going to the turn on now). Make is something easy to unhook, so you don't kill your battery. If this fixes the problem, then it is a turn on issue.
Dalton, I think he is saying that the amp turns off, making a thump, while the radio is still on. Not just a turn on thump, as your scenario would create.

I agree, but i think he's curious WHY the amp turns off by itself while the radio is on.

and this jumper will take the turn on from the headunit out of the equation, so he can find out. If it still does it, then it is not the headuint. If it stops, then he might be on to something.
Toby
Or he can take pictures of his setup and stop wasting everyone's time playing the not-so-descriptive guessing game.

good call.
Thats why I always like to wire up a separate switch anyways for my amps.

I am not sure how to do a jumper, but yes Toby that is what I was trying to say. Just like this evening on my way home the radio and amp was on and playing music for a good 20 minutes then POP and off.. head unit of course stayed on.
But like PO57 has made obvious I have not been very descriptive, which I apologize for but I am not too familiar with sound systems I was just glad my head unit works. So since I wasn't able to take pics today I'll just take it down some place this weekend and have someone look at it for me.
Toby and DJGizmo, thanks for trying to help.

Thank you much!
I'm betting that it's the wiring/grounding.
One last question:
When you're idling, are you hearing a high pitched whine? does it get louder as you give the car a little gas (in neutral/park)?

^ No, nothing like that. the only thing that is unusual its the pop of the speakers when the amp turns off, sometimes (rarely) with the pop a squeal will accompany it but it only last for the second of the amp turning off
