so i've been jonesing to build an aluminum exhaust. well, thanks to ian, i got my chance. turned out pretty good. sounds pretty cool too. i obviously have yet to put hangers on it, so i'll get pics of that as i finish them up.

if you want one built, expect to pay $1000~$1200. probably not the first one built, but we are probably going to jig them and start selling them.

we'll be building another one for another supra in about a week. that one will be n/a, so hopefully it will sound good too.

the vid isn't the best quality, i took it on my camera. either way, enjoy!

I'm not a metallurgist or anything, but I always thought aluminum didn't have the properties to be heated to high temperatures and cooled repetitively and still retain its strength?

Hey guys,

I don't ever post in here but.... I am intrigued and I think I am missing something here. Please give me some insight as to why aluminum.. It's strong but but the only alum systems I have ever seen have been on full exh. mandated SOLO cars that only run weekend stints or bike exhaust casings. I don't know if you maybe have some uber aluminum stock, but I just don't know how long that is going to last on a street car. Alum has a tensile strength of 3000 psi at 400° .. but at 800-1000 which a NA car sees, it drops exponentailly.. What am I missing ?!?

they've been running aluminum exhaust on race cars for years. figured we would try a couple on street cars and see how they hold up.

benifit is that its lighter and the sound change. not to mention, you don't seem them very often.

You are not really missing out on anything. We just wanted to have something different. Besides all the aftermarket support, we've done plenty of stainless, etc, so it was time for something different. The weight difference is substantial on the exhaust system, so that's a #1 plus. We have other things that we are going to try, we will see.

Yes, I understand this and I have built a couple alum exhausts a couple of years back for a couple of guys in SOLO brackets, to get around pesky regulations which stated "full exhaust systems" but the exhausts were just that; "race application" on race or weekend Solo cars. They never had any kind of longevity to them as compared to a Ti unit though....
Kind of why I wondered if you were using some kind of new composite alum or alum alloy... which from the pics I saw, did not look like it... hence the sparked interest.
I hope this works out for you guys though.

all the problems that i've heard associated with aluminum exhaust usually are caused by the lack of construction. thin wall pipe and weak braketry. i went with a thicker wall and better construction in hopes that it would last a decent amount of time before having structural issues.

it really hit home a couple years ago when i was working on a 80's vette wich had a cast aluminum exhaust on it made by i think linginfelter. it had adjustable mufflers and all kinds of resonators. i figured if that held up to daily driving, i'm sure that i could make somthing work.

not to mention, we can offer these for about the same price as stainless and possibly a little cheaper.

also the weight benifit is there. i started on a thread on honda-tech to see about what other people were doing for these setups and a guy found the weights for different size piping.

"weight per linear foot
6061:
4" x .120" = 1.7202
4" x .083" = 1.2011
4" x .065" = 0.9449
304:
4" x .120" = 5.0377
4" x .083" = 3.5176
4" x .065" = 2.7674
4" x .058" = 2.4738
4" x .049" = 2.0947
"

there is roughly 8 ft of pipe in the system which will shave about 10 lbs off the exhaust. not sure how much exhaust stuff you do, but to have a heavy exhaust slinging around the back of a turbo will lead to all kinds of cracking issues, so the benefit for me is the longevity of every other component in the system. obviously you can add flex joints and more hangers, but my person experiece has taught me that weight plays a huge role.

I totally agree on what you said with the weight being an issue. This is why I always put in a Burns 304 or 316 flex section.. It just makes any exhaust / manifold last. What you probably saw was a sand cast alum exhaust system.. which in theory would work... but cast and schedule are 2 completely different things... sand cast alums heat tolerance is way way higher than any schedule section that is readily available to you and me. Hell look at everything that Toyota makes that is aluminum.... besides the block... all sand casted alum.
Again, neat project and hope it turns out for you.

thanks for the interest. i'm hoping it will work out. its a lot easyer to build and weld. frankly, i'm a better aluminum welder then stainless.

ian's had his for about a month with no issues, so i'm keeping my fingers crossed.

interesting idea. i have always wondered how something liek this would hold up to daily use (i.e. flexing, cracking, speedbump scrapes, hot exh vs. puddles)

my main concern is the heat of the exhaust at the inlet when you hit a puddle or some sort of water. also, the aluminum i would think would weaken alot with heat and once bottomed out, rubbed against, etc would bend it much easier and/or crack.

very interesting though. glad someone had the balls to finally put forth the effort and time into answering the questions that have been on alot of our minds.

thanks for showing some interest. usually most of these systems are built from .065 wall aluminum or even .083, but i went the extra step and used .120 wall for durability. i know that aluminum is not supposed to be used for high heat apps, however with enough material and good enough welding, there is no reason it can't hold up for a decent amount of time.

the fact that it would work was a no brainer, but how long, thats the question. we have two car now running them, so i guess only time will tell.
