View Full Version : 1/8th v. 1/4
To start: I am not bashing either type of racing and hope that nobody else will either.
What is a good time in the 1/8th? Ive never run Ive just ran 1/4s. Do people run different setups like more low end instead of upper? I dont understand it why the 1/8?

I dont know either. I personally dont like the 1/8 mile. It places more emphasis on a car with good launching capabilities suspension setup than HP. I like the full 1/4 since both come into play. Not to mention my car doesnt launch for shit so I am biased towards the 1/4. As far as a good time thats debateable but I would say anything in the 8s is respectable. 7s is gettin it and 6s is pretty serious. My best isnt thst great ET wise. A 7.5 at 97 mph in the 1/8 mile. In 1/8 mile racing getting your 60 time down is essential to good ET. In the full 1/4 you can make up some of that with additional HP in the top end.

1/4 mile is the best but if you just wanna do a little testing on your car or practice your 60ft times sunshine is alot closer.

the thing with the 1/8th it has to be a lot easier for the tracks I mean you cant hardly get to 200 MPH in an 1/8th so it has to be a little safer...
as far as technically people that run the 1/8th have totally different gearing there was a guy there with a car like mine with 5.30 gears and he was turning some great times...
I have not been to a track since I rebuilt my engine but back when it was stock I got a 10.0 @ ~70 MPH (its been a while.. cant remember exactly)
They are great for practicing your launch reaction times and consistency...

Since AWD = great traction I dont mind 1/8 mile. Hell for me its just one more shift for the 1/4. 1/4 is alot more fun though. With the AWD I can really suprise alot of people and hang with or beat alot of cars that would walk me down in the 1/4. Street cars anyway. http://www.tamparacing.com/ubb/smile.gif I know 16GAWD really whips some ass in 1/8 mile.

I go to Sunshine for just that. Practice 60 times and just to see how the car is running. Its a convenient and close place to run the car and see if all the money you spent that week really did anythingbut the quarter is what its really all about.
Most races are won or lost in the first 60 feet. That is the place to practice.

The 1/4 is certainly where its at but I too go to Sunshine to practice my launches. Realistically though with the automatic anything after the 1/8 is just keeping the car straight. http://www.tamparacing.com/ubb/wink.gif I would say that a good running time for street cars is in the 8s. I am in the high 7s (7.8) but can easily goof up the launch and come out too hard and end up in the 8s or even worse. Being in the 8s will win you most if not all races against other street cars. I still prefer the 1/4 but for practice and location you cant beat Sunshine.

WIth my busted ass suspension and a tired (180000miles) non turbo motor i was pulling 10.1s all night long. I ran 24 times in one night and ranged from 10.150 to 10.28. Id say its pretty consistent and thats exactly why I like the 1/8 mile. It helps me get consistency. That and its much more like street racing. Street races rarely last farther than the 1/8 mile so the setup and results at sunshine are very much just like the results I will see by street racing (my love). So for that reason I like Sunshine. Of course I could always enjoy desoto also because thats what big ass turbos are for. Reelin em in.

I dont mind the 1/8 cause my car hooks.
Best so far is a 7.61@90. That was the last run the T-5 endured. Launched at 4500? with a 1.62 60. Best in the 1/4 is a 12.1@109.
I dont make a ton of power but what I do make I get to the ground. Thats the most important thing to me.
