My brother went to Best Buy today to look at laptops and of course I wandered off in to the camera section. Anyway to keep a long story short I want a DSLR camera now.
It's a toss up between the Rebel xti which from what I've seen and heard from you guys is a great camera, or the Sony a100k I haven't really heard anything about this camera but my first camera was a 5.1mp sony cybershot and I loved it, now I have the h9 cybershot and also love it. I know most will recommend the xti, but I wanna see if anyone has or used a sony a100k.
I open for any more suggestion in the price range of somewhere around $1k. The only setback I have is that it has to be from best buy because I have a credit card with them.

Get the Rebel, its one of the best and highly recommended DSLRs you can get. Plently will vouch for it here. Canon and Nikon are the way to go, doesn't really matter which model you get. I recommend getting a Canon Rebel Xti, a tripod, extra battery, and 1GIG+ card.

I will have to agree with the xti. That's what I just bought Matt and he's extremely happy with it. Takes great pictures and it was very easy for him to learn on. At least that's what he told me.
Me not so much only for the simple fact that I never see it or get to use it. I'm thinking about buying me a camera just so I have one.

On a side by side comparison the sony slightly out does the xti IMO but I know there will be more support for the xti and cannon in general has been making cameras longer than sony.

Does he have a lens for it or did he use the one it came with? The pictures he takes come out awesome and thats one of the reasons I'm looking at the xti.

We didn't buy anything extra other than the card. What you see is what you get LOL
The camera comes with simple editing software that he learned pretty easy too. It's almost fool proof.

Do you have a sony? I'm looking for someone that actually owns a sony. Obviously most people are biased towards others name brands. I know I am.
This is exactly what I was looking for. I'm sure alot of first time buyers will too.

After reading through that whole article it seems each camera has its strong point, and I'm still undecided. The only thing really holding me back from getting the xti is the lack of image stabilization.

Nope Im an XT user. I dont like Sony personally. The sony does have the IS built in going for it. Its really doubtful you will ever see it on a Canon or Nikon due to them losing money on their lenses with it built in.
I was just letting you know, if you go Sony, you guy buy the older Minolta autofocus stuff and most of it will work on the new Sonys

I read an article way back when stating that lens stabilization is more capable than sensor stabilization, which is why Nikon and Canon started making VR/IS lenses rather than adding IS/VR to their bodies.
In any event, check out the D40X. It's a great SLR, the JPEGs it puts out are so vivid. Very compact also.
If you're dead set on Canon or Sony, I think I'd go Sony but I've never a ctually held one. It's all about ergonomics for me, because in the end I don't think you can go wrong with any of them.

This is true I dont think I'll be disappointed with any one I choose. I'm looking into the d40 now.
And thank you for editing my title it really bothered me:lol:

Looks like I'll most likely go with the xti. I like the fact that it has alot more "accessory" support unlike the sony which I'd probably have to buy everything for it offline. Now I just have to sell my old camera.

Yeah, buy from B&H or Adorama. They're the big two reputable camera stores.
B&H has a MASSIVE store in NYC if you're ever up that way. I've heard it's amazingly huge.

If only it was an xti, the camera I have now is 8.1mp so I dont feel like it'll be worth the upgrade.

Upgrading from what you have now to any DSLR is a HUGE upgrade. That comes with alot of accessories. I was going to get it but the funds aren't all here right now, if I were you I would snatch it up before I or anyone else does.

Well I just came back from Ritz and I am now a proud owner of an...XTi. And if anyone is interested Ritz is having a killer deal on black friday which I got today. You get the XTi for $699.99 plus a free quantaray 70-300mm F4.6 lens($150 value) I also bought there 17-85mm lens with Image stabilization. I think I should be set for a good while with what I have now.
I'd like to thank everyone in this thread who helped with their opinions and what not, it really was appreciated.
Now I just have to learn how to use the damn thing:lol:

I just asked if they had happened to have a sale on black friday would I get compensated for the sale price, then she checked if they were having a sale on the XTi's and sure enough they were, so that's how that happened.

Congrats! You'll be happy with it.
You got a better deal than we did. We paid right around $800 for ours. Maybe a little less. Then again, I didn't wait until the holiday hoopla shopping either.
Now get to shootin'.
