ok i am going to be in the daytona turkey rod run this year and i would like to play the system for ppl not slamming like hell but you know reasonably loud... but i dont wanna just play it in accessory mode and kill my altenator or battery. but i saw a video on youtube where a guy hooked a battery charger to his battery and just ran it off the battery charger. and i dont have one of your everyday crap battery chargers... i was hoping one of the ballers of the audio hq forum would help me (NotLadStyle, TJElite, etc..)

You could always get a deep cycle battery and use it then when the show is over put your good one back in

oh ok i was just wondering i thought running just one deep cycle would go dead in minutes

Deep cycle would probally get you 45 minutes of play. Just get a battery charger and find a place to plug it in.

There are SO many variables to look at when trying to decide what charger to get, but it all boils down to more amps = more $$$.
Unless you are planning to make a career out of audio competitions, I doubt you will want to invest in the power supplies you see running competition vehicles. They are worth a very large amount of cash.
Since I usually only push my system for short periods or I run it at lower volumes, my 12amp has been sufficient. If you just want something to extend your run time and keep your battery safe from serious damage, a charger like this might serve your purposes.
This one runs about $40 and can run at full load continuously for 6-8 hours.

Really you need to narrow down your application.
Will you be playing your system on many different occasions or is it just this one time show?
How loud will you play it?
How long will you be playing it?
How long breaks will you have in between?
What kind of power output do you have?
How many batteries do you have?

1. This once a year show
2. Not loud at all just so i can hear it
3. 6 Hours Tops
4. Probably 2 Hours
5. 1600 Watt Autotek Stealth XS
6. 1 commercial grade battery (picking up a yellow top soon)

you dont really need a high amperage commercial charger then. Just get something like what I have. I need about 30 minutes in between pulls to get the battery back to 100%. you can also throw it under a seat and wire it directly into your power system and run an extension cord to it for that custom look.

you can get about 6 hours out of lets just say a die hard marine battery. Thats what I used at NOPI last year. It powered my inverter that controlled my smoke machine, audio and video. All depends on what you have though. If you want to really do good get a stinger brand charger, I have the 40A one now and the only thing I cant do is start my car with it (yes I tried)

why dont you just turn the car on?
Bowtie

because im not gonna run a 350 which eats up gas for 6 straight hours... and if you turn it on accesory mode and run subs on that you will chew up your alternator and battery....

How do you chew up an alt when the car is off? Just get a decent size battery charger and plug it in whne at the show.

By forcing it to charge a battery you just ran down with your stereo. The lower the battery voltage, the more current flows, the more unhappy your alternator gets.
I agree with the charger, and that's what I do at indoor shows. Be careful with what kind and how big a charger, though. If you get a 'smart' charger, that will truly monitor battery condition, and adjust charging voltage / current, then you don't have to worry. Since these are usually expensive, and the cheaper ones suck, I'd suggest you stick to a maximum of 10 amps, and shut the system down once in a while, to let it catch up. I've seen more than a couple batteries 'boiled out' by a too high a charge current, for too long.
In any event, make sure you check the battery from time to time, looking for signs of overcharging...lots of heat and / or gas bubbles escaping from the case (yes, even an AGM battery, like an optima, or almost any other 'sealed' battery will gas if overcharged.) If you think its overcharging, shut it off...better safe than sorry.
Make sure you charge, with the system off, for a good while before you start the car, or you will get the unhappy alternator situation above.

I don't know what that dude is talking about.
I'm not a moderator in this thread, and unless he was clearly spamming, I won't really remove the post or anything. I'll let john or 88redrex decide what to do about it.
Although I should delete it for just being a nonsensical post.
Back on topicish:
It's never good to completely drain down batts and having things force to work harder than they should, it's like a law of physics, things will end up breaking.
Also:

I wasn't looking for you to delete it...I just thought he needed one of your 'welcome to TR, thanks for the ultra useful post' messages :D
Yeah, back from Vegas. Sema was really disappointing this year. I do have some pics, and I'll get around to posting some later.

I'm not really allowed to talk like that much anymore unless he came in here talking in ghetto about how he slammed a 160 with a 8" pyle woofer powered off a potato in a glass of water.

Hell no man, I'll probably be the first one there as usual! Maybe you can outline a plan for my new car, I think I trust you to do stuff to it more than I trust myself.:crack:
