Well im finally getting my first DSLR camera. after doing the best i could with a point n shoot im finally upgrading.


i was stuck between the Nikon D80 and the Canon Rebel XTi.
and everyones told me the Canon is better.

is that true?



ive seen these on eBay, which seem pretty good. let me know which one you think is a better deal.

and if you have a better place that sells them cheaper or something , let me know.

My opinion: go to your local super-retailer and pick them both up. See which one you like the feel of, because that's the one difference you'll notice every time you use it.

Don't buy any of these eBay packages. In the end you can do better buying individually most times. See B&H Photo Video | Digital Cameras, Camcorders (http://www.bhphotovideo.com) or Digital cameras, all other cameras and everything photographic from Adorama Camera (http://www.adorama.com) for decent camera retailers. Also, inevitably you'll search google and find some of the notorious NYC camera scam retailers. Check Discount Shopping and Store Reviews by Real People at ResellerRatings (http://www.resellerratings.com/) before buying anything online, especially cameras.

If you fall for that you're limiting yourself. Canon has good lenses, but so does most every other major manufacturer. Digital Camera Reviews and News: Digital Photography Review: Forums, Glossary, FAQ (http://www.dpreview.com/) is a good place to start looking for more information on your purchase, but avoid asking "which is better" type questions on the forums as it will turn into a pissing contest anywhere you go. Photographers are very territorial when it comes to their equipment because it's so expensive.

You're right, you'll be happy with either. As I said before, people are going to tell you that what they have is the best. Ultimately it won't change anyone's life but yours, other than the fact that it will make me feel better if you buy Nikon and it will make others happy if you buy Canon.

What about Pentax? Have you looked at the K10D? Weather sealed, pancake lenses, etc. Have you looked at Fuji? Same physical body as the Nikon, but with different features including that extended dynamic range photosite thing. There are other options, check em out.

LOL. As I said, check resellerratings.com or you're taking a shot in the dark.

Their rating is 4.77 out of 10 over the last ten months. 3.08 out of 10 lifetime. Here's a sample review:

"Very BAD place to do business.
I recieved 2 emails telling me to call about my order.
I recieved a phone call from them trying to sell me more stuff (hard sell). When I said no, he said enjoy your camera.
Then I recieved another emial so I called to find out what was going on and was told that the Canon xti that I bought was a "Japanese" camera and that they were out of them. He tried to sell me a "US" version at about $100 more. I asked when they would get the cheaper version in, his reply was never.

1.) The bait and switch is RAMPANT in this industry of online camera buying. It can be EASILY AVOIDED if you do research on the retailer. There are no amazing deals in this game.

2.) Research the term "grey market" - that's where a lot of scams occur too. You want a warranty, don't you?

I don't know who you're talking to on AIM, but hearsay isn't worth the paper it's written on. I can only offer so much advice. It's your money, do what you will.

I think it was Office Depot that had the Canon XTi on sale for 20% off $799.99, so $639.99. I took the ad into Circuit City and they price matched plus 10% of the difference so about $623.99 plus tax. Just throwing it out in case you wanted a local source for warrenty, etc.

Going from a Point and Shoot to an SLR is a BIG enough jump that as your first camera, either one, the Canon or Nikon will suit you perfectly.

Do what I did and work your way up. I started out with my Sony Cybershot, now I have a Powershot S3IS. Theres a BIG difference in picture quality straight from the camera. I hope I can get a DSLR soon, I've had the Powershot for a month now and I'm bored:lol:
