View Full Version : Need someone to help select and install a subwoofer system
The car is a 1999 Buick LeSabre Custom. I have a Pioneer Premier deck. All already installed and working properly.
I need someone to help me select a sub and enclosure and an amp to match. Sub doesn't have to be big, I DON'T want something obnoxious or even loud enough to rattle the car. I just need a sub with excellent clean sound (from the trunk) to give the Polk Momos some low end compliment. I already have a cheap set of wires from Walmart...may need to buy some better wires, I dunno. Then I need them to install it. Will buy new or used parts, depending on what the monkeys here are tossing around at the time.
Who wants what to install it? Please, don't bother if you're just a part-time hackjob installer. I need the install done clean, properly, and with NOTHING broken in the process.

So you just need someone to install the sub or what? Or you need all new power wire ran and all of that?
I recommend notladstyle if he's willing to do it.
As far as shops to go to:
T&J Elite's or MCOR. Depending on your location. They're both very good shops.

If you looking for something cheap just for the low-end, I would reccomend some Sundown SD-1s, they are on a blowout sale right now. Sundown SD-1 Subwoofer Blowout Sale - SSA: (http://www.soundsolutionsaudio.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=11166)
I would also reccomend a Sundown 100.2 ... Even with 2 subs and that amp everything should be less than $400 for equipment.
If you aren't at all sure what brand you want in sub/amp, I would suggest swinging by the shop and looking at the merchandise on-hand or thumbing through the catalogs (whether it is at my shop or one of the others here). Once you decide on the sub, that will dictate the enclosure and amp necessary to achieve what you are looking for. As far as WalMart wiring goes..... If you haven't opened it and it is returnable, I would rather see you use what we do in the shops (at least DB Link or something equivalent-it will be less than you paid at WalMart but of a much better "pro" quality). Install is cheap and simple to keep clean once you choose your equipment with the level of bass you are looking for. You are right though, stick with an independant shop or at least someone reputable from these forums (Dalton aka NotLadStyle). You will stay within your budget and get a quality install...

Nothing is gonna flow and look clean in that trunk except fiberglass in a corner.
I would get a 10w3, good value good price, with reasonable box requirements.

A fiberglass box in the corner = $$$$$$$, too, right? I remember you brought up making a box, mounting the amp on top of it, and putting a lip there to hide the amp. A JL 10w3, what kind of amp do you recommend? You feel up to the task?

Yup, still returnable. I'll bring it back and get a refund and just get the better wires from a shop. I like the way the JL 10 sounds, but I dunno if there is anything better out there. Whats the deal about the Sundowns that the727kid recommended?

The whole shebang. I need a ground drilled and mounted, power wire ran, RCAs ran, and a remote ran.

No one on this forum really knows about Sundown except Toby, who is a retailer for them.
Personally I would go with the Sundown SD1 over a W3, it is half the cost with probally close to the same output. Even though the W3 looks alot sexier lol. Other subs I would reccomend would be an RD Audio Studio 12, AA Assissan, maybe an AA Arsenal or RL-i 10 if you wanna spend a lil more money. But the Sundown sub/amp combo is going to probally be the best bang for your $ with very good SQ. Not to mention almost no drain on your electrical.

do they exist anywhere local that I could listen to them?

Don't thread-jack you dickwad, make your own thread or PM him privately.
I swear, some dumb people on these boards

Yes, Toby's shop is not too far up hillsborough when it turns into Tampa rd.
I'll vouch for sundown products, easily some high grade quality stuff, sounds very good. If you buy from Toby as well, he sells stuff for great prices and is incredibly informative.
Fiberglass does not necessarily mean a LOT of $$, just more than a simpler wooden box. It's not exactly the funnest or easiest thing to do.
I'm going to pay that shop a visit this week probably. While we're on the subject, will one sub pushed into a corner sound right? Will I know the sound is coming from a corner or will it sound off because it isn't in the middle? I've never dealt with a low powered sub in a trunk like this. I mean, there is a great place to mount a fiberglass enclosure right in front of the left taillight, but would you even hear that all the way across the bigass trunk and into the cab of the car? I'm figuring the box should stay close to the rear seat if not there, right?

Yes, it will sound fine. Bass (low frequency notes) are omnidirectional sounds. This means that it is harder for the ear to determine the true location of the sound's source.
Notladstyle has a fiberglassed box in the corner of his car and in all honesty it sounds fairly good as if it was just almost in the middle, but then again he had a pretty strong woofer that was just blasting that one corner to hell so you really felt the car vibrate a little more on one side. You will not notice it when driving though, only if you move around in the car in different seats ;).
Most of the actual sound isn't coming FROM the woofer itself, it's the SPL (Sound Pressure Level) waves bouncing off the surfaces, vibrating them to give the sound you hear and feel.
If you're really that worried about the location of the subwoofer, go meet up with Dalton (notladstyle) if he's OK with it, and ask him to play different tracks in the car and when he plays one track, listen to it with the subwoofer in one side of the car, then ask him to slide it over to the middle (he doesn't have his perma-mounted) and then to the other side. The difference is fairly negligible.

It will sound fine. A lot of pure SQ cars have a sub in the corner. Bass FQ are non directional, the higher the FQ the more directional (i.e. 1khz and up ).
