Hopefully it's the last time you have to do it. You're getting 3-4 straight cut now right? Great job though!

dont know why... ive launched the car maybe two or three times in the past 5k miles.

dont even think its worth bringing to mastro to ask about warranty though.

dont even think its worth bringing to mastro to ask about warranty though.

Why is that? I would still bring it in, you know third gear is the most likely of the five to go. Make an appointment and I'll get one of our master tech's to rip it open and see what we find. Even if it's not covered you still have to get into it, I'd like to see any quality transmission shop take it and tear it open for less than $528.00

hey man! sorry about the 3rd going.....
But anyways, we can talk about prices over the phone if you would like!

what exactly do you need me to do? ie, take it out? install it?

and what gears are you getting?

LDadrenaline
10-28-2007, 09:44 PM
hoping to get a call back from andrewtech tomorrow... i really would like to do something cheaper than PPGs though, i dont have that kind of money. Probably would need it taken out, then reinstalled whenever it comes back in. Whatever I do, I should have gears ordered within the next 3 days. Still trying to make the chin event on the 10th :D I just dont know any other options besides PPGs other than cryo'd RA gears, but i dont want to ever have to do anything with the tranny again if im spending that much money

and im not going to bring it in for warranty because i dont want to pay $600 to be told its not covered (which i know it wont be. VF39, custom tuned, will and ray both know i do track days....).

ryan_west06
10-28-2007, 10:07 PM
ya man, i feel ya! thats the price you pay tho.... if you want quality then get the ppg gears. I have no problem pulling the tranny for you!

the cryod ra gears arent really worth it... but its what you want man!

When did you need me to pull it. and where? is it in a garage?

xxBoost Junkiexx
10-28-2007, 10:15 PM
If you're going to do it, you might as well do it right. PPG/6MT or nothing at all. That $528.00 is to take the transmission out, split it open, and diagnose it. You may have done more damage than just third gear. I would want to know for sure if I were spending that much money. But, it's up to you.

the car will probably be in the garage at my house, ill let you know when i get the gears ordered and get the car back to tampa

cant do a 6mt, something about the 06 rear end is different. you have to change all the drivetrain pieces including the axles (which are attached to the hubs and since its off an sti that would mean 5x114.3). Both sets of wheels I have are 5x100, and I have a $3000 BBK that fits a wrx, not an sti. wanted to just swap in the 6spd and call it a day, but alas, its not that easy

So you'll spend 3k on brakes but not 5k on PPG gears.... doesn't make sense to me. BTW did you sell your fog lights?

LDadrenaline
10-28-2007, 11:05 PM
i spent $3k in brakes because i *melted* my stock brakes... literally... I found good brakes for a good price though. Didn't have to spend like $5-6k on name brand brakes. Just like I would like to find a nice alternative for PPGs.

I still have the fogs at my house, needed air ducting for my brakes.

or you can get the DSS stage 5 axles for the r180 conversion out back or find JDM ver 5/6 ra rear cv's as they are the same..do an r180, the 6-speed, and 6-spd driveshaft; then just the stub shafts/clips for the front cv's to work...very simple and strong...your 5mt clutch can even carry over, so long as you use the flywheel again.
It really is that easy...easier for you than me, as I had to change 2 studs on the diff and go to the newer age tranny crossmember :p

as for other gearset optionss...
hollinger (mrt and awesome!!), par/chalak (commone manufacturying related failures), kaaz (seem to eat 3rd gears in the syncro sets also short!!!), modena(early mrt) and aps (crappy)...just to name a few

as for 1.5 hours to pull the tranny, damn!!! you have me beat my 15 minutes

ryan_west06
10-29-2007, 12:07 AM
15 minutes my ass LOL....

I'm serious...as the dyno shop I use to work at, I was the subaru tech and have pulled my own trannies (I have 3 that I alternate ) 12 times in the past 6 months...slight power issue...also have done 3 rear diffs in that time.

the 6-spd there is now way in hell I could do in that time...it is such a tight fit that it actually touches both sides of the tunnel.

Now, the 1.75 hours job was a cable-clutch, push style.

LDadrenaline
10-29-2007, 12:35 AM
so out of the gearboxes/sets you named the only one worth getting (the hollinger) is more expensive than the ppgs? damn

are challacks supposed to be as good as PPGs? will they at least be bulletproof at 300whp?

there are alot of gear sets out there man!!! challack makes a good set for the price!

challack doesn't have his own company anymore...he and par are the same now...he still designs the sets though...they seem to have manufacturing flaws often as the number of sub 400whp cars breaking them, yet they still manage to be in the fastest subies in australia...
not to long ago I got rid of my par straight cut dog box for fear of destroying them...that and gerard said they wouldn't hold my end goal

modena's are nice and are on the roger clark motorsports "gobstopper" but a 6-spd set. Shawn Lozy still has a set in his car that made 600 but has been sitting for the past 2 years...hollingers are quite nice and are slide on, not press on...andy forest is actually running them in his 9.1 second scoobie.

ppg's are a great bang for the buck...the 5-spd dog box can only handle 800...if you want more than that, you need a built 6-spd http://images.nasioc.com/ubb-files/smilies/lildevil.gif

yep, about a month ago I was getting ready to buy a tranny with an already stripped out gear so I could have a gearbox ready to go in when this one blew. Figured it would at least show signs that it was going to take a shit so I wasn't in a huge rush. Now I am... lol.

LDadrenaline

if the car is on a lift is it possible to pull the tranny out from below without taking out the engine?

my dad has decided he wants to just buy a stock 3rd gear and cryo it, hope it can last at least 15-20k miles again.... we just dont have the $5k-$6k for the PPG box right now, he just bought gears for his car a few weeks ago. Apparently porsche gears are much cheaper than subarus.... surprising

LOL good, you were talking about removing it when you removed the tranny I thought. Can you remove the tranny on jackstands or is that what we have been talking about all along? lol

also PM me with a price for removal and reinstallation of the tranny. My dad has someone he likes to use, but if you are cheaper we will use you.
