J Phat, we need more specifics. Give us a price range so we have a starting point.
It sounds like you want an SLR. I only really know pricing for the Nikon line, here it is:
D40 - 6.1 megapixel with 18-55 II lens = $499
D40X - 10.2 megapixel with 18-55 II = $674
D80 - 10.2 megapixel with 18-55 (not II) = $979
D80 - 10.2 megapixel with 18-135 = $1149

I think that your the one the needs to do the research not us. We arent you and we dont know what you want the camera for. Different cameras are better at doing certain things better than others and if all you want to do is show off by having a nice camera then its not going to be worth it for you if you dont know a damn thing and you just bought some camera that a guy on the internet told you to get.

I agree totally, I just happen to have that laying around from when I was looking....
J Phat- What kind of camera do you have now? I know you have one from your PS help thread and I know it's decent because they were pretty good quality. Tell me/us what you have now and it'll be easier to help give suggestions as to what you should look at. And don't think you can't research on your own. Best Buy's website is pretty detailed and will give you an idea on price range. Two sites that I've noticed a lot of photographers will frequent are newegg.com and dpreview.com. Plus there's always Amazon/Half/eBay.... Hope this helps.

If your not going to:
1. Stick to photography
2. Use it often enough to get your moneys worth
Then i wouldn't even bother getting a camera over 600.

actually guys i was at best buy today and i was looking at the Canon Rebel XTi. see you guys dont know me. money is not an issue with me. i make enough money and have enough money to buy what i want when it comes to certain things. so money isnt an issue. and yes i plan on using my camera A LOT. and as far as the camera i use to take my pix, its not mine. erotica is right. its my buddy sean and i think its like a 4mp.
3drwhore - i didnt want you to do ANY research at all. i just wanted your opinion and thats it. i also dont want a nice camera to be like "hey guys i have a totally sick camera! now you can blow me because i have a sick ass camera!" thats not it at all. i wouldnt waiste my money on that stupidity at all. i plan on taking scenery shot, car/bike shots. and that is really all i want to do. and i do not know really anything about cameras. but there is always time to learn. i have to start somewhere.

Well if that's your stance on the situation, I would say look into the XTi (or Nikon equivilent) and use it and learn as much as you can until you actually see the camera as limiting your abilities... With a decent lens and card, You'll be looking at roughly a grand. I just went this same path of figuring out where to start because I had been using a 3.0MP Kodak and it really was keeping me from taking the shots I wanted. I'm now happier with what I have and feel I can learn a lot more now.
Again, I hope this helps and, no, I'm not some sort of camera expert or even a salesman, I just did this too and am just trying to pass along what others have told me.

if money is no issue then fuck it, go get a D2X and call it a day.
but you should really do research on photography if you want to take pictures that are even worth anything with a DSLR. f stop, iso, composition, white balance. there is a shit load to consider to take a good shot the first try. and if all you are going to be doing is pionting the camera at something on auto and pressing the shutter button then I say a sony cybershot is calling your name.

lol no i will be sitting there and maintain the focus of it. i plan on getting a tri-pod for super steady shots. and also i will go thru and mess with the settings and sit there and mess with everything and set it up the way i like it lol.
but how much is the D2X your talking about? i plan on spending about $1,400.

see you guys dont know me. money is not an issue with me.
Money is always an issue when it comes to most hobbies, this one included. A top-notch setup can cost as much as a house. Everyone has a budget, regardless of how much money they make.
and yes i plan on using my camera A LOT.
Good. Don't be discouraged when your pictures suck. It takes a lot of practice to get pictures that are good... all too often everyone will chime in and say 'good pics' or 'great shots' here when they're just mediocre.
i plan on taking scenery shot, car/bike shots. and that is really all i want to do. and i do not know really anything about cameras. but there is always time to learn. i have to start somewhere.
There are a lot of good books out there. Pick up a copy of Understanding Exposure by Bryan Peterson. It's about $25 or so at Borders, if I remember correctly.
no i will be sitting there and maintain the focus of it.
Um, what? That doesn't make much sense.
i plan on getting a tri-pod for super steady shots. and also i will go thru and mess with the settings and sit there and mess with everything and set it up the way i like it lol.
Decent tripods cost as much as cameras. There are even 'pods made out of carbon fiber in some cases. A good tripod will not cost less than $400, anything less will be sacrificing stability, movement or quality.
but how much is the D2X your talking about? i plan on spending about $1,400.
Oh look, money is an oject. I was right. ;)
D2X is out of your range in both skill and price. The D2X will run you approximately $4,299.95 at B&H. If you were going to spend this kind of change you'd be better of buying the D3 at $4,999.95 when it comes out in November.
If you've got any other questions feel free to ask. IMO you should buy a D40 (D50 if you can find one used, it's a better camera IMI) and spend six months learning to use the thing before you buy anything else.

see honestly idc what people say bro. i will get the camera and experiment with it a lot before i ever post pix. and money is no problem. im just not going to go and spend 3k on a camera setup. i have another s13 to build and id rather invest my money in that instead of dropping 3k on a setup that is way beyond my skill level. i think im just going to get the rebel xti and call it a day.

The basic setup it seems like your looking for is the Xti like people are saying. For the 1400 your looking to spend, you can get basically everything you need but a good external flash. As for lenses, I do believe the L series is the best but shouldn't be needed in less your going to be really serious. I didn't look at this to much but i found this setup, and its off ebay but your buying name brand lenses and a body, as for the accessories i didnt look, but its in your price and seems like what u want. And maybe add in an extra battery and remote.

Anything thats a Canon, best camera in the business. The lens is so much better than any other camera I've used. I just bought a Canon Powershot S3IS (see thread "Got a new camera (56k take a hike)". It works awesome, and I got it for a meesly 200.00. Brand new they are under 300 I am certain. Most say its basically a "bottom-barrel" DSLR.

if you are starting out why not go for a advance p&s. they are great for the beginners to learn and play with at a fraction of the cost. sony h5/h7 and cannon powershot S3/S5 IS are great advance p&s cameras. they allow you the freedom to learn many of the techniques that you would learn with an DSLR. these cameras i think are all 10x opt zoom or higher with 7+mp which is really all anyone needs starting out with. also alot of these p&s camera you have find extra ad-on lens to telephoto or wide angel.

Anything thats a Canon, best camera in the business.
Pick up a Nikin before you decide on any of the Canon SLR's. Regardless of any other differences, the ergonomics of the Canon SLR's are just not comfortable.
Most say its basically a "bottom-barrel" DSLR.
There you go again.
Being able to go full manual is only the first step. 95% of P&S cameras will not stand up to DSLR image quality even at a low ISO. Step above ISO200 and you will start to lose image quality and gain noise no matter the camera. It's not a matter of opinion, it's a matter of the physical size of the sensor (read: size of pixels). Next, show me a point and shoot that can shoot continuous raw shots at a decent rate. It just doesn't happen. How about shutter lag? Do any P&S cameras support any sort of TTL flash system? Can they support strobes? The list is a mile long.
Bottom Line: Any camera will get a good picture under great conditions. A great camera will get a good picture in bad conditions (low light and so forth). Try any point and shoot at ISO1600 and see how degraded the image quality becomes. If you're still not convinced, compare it to any Canon or Nikon dSLR at ISO1600. If you're serious, buy an SLR; if you're not, buy a P&S.

Well first things first, I would never get a "Nikin" because those don't seem to exist. If you meant Nikon then no, I still will not get one. Before this I had a Sony, it sucked. Everyone said how good Canon was and it had the best lens in the business. I bought one and I will not buy another brand besides Canon again. You can brag on and on about Nikon and how would I know the quality if I didn't try one. I don't care, I don't want one.
And what do you mean by there you go again? I took everything I said from my thread that others have posted. JJ made this thread asking for opinions, I gave mine. Don't ridicule me for what I said. Help the guy out or gtfo. It's simple.

Sorry for mistyping Nikon. I won't let it happen again. If this is your biggest argument against why I've said then I don't ahve much to worry about.
Who brought Sony into this? You did... Not sure what Sony has to do with any of this, I'll disregard unless you fill me in.
I didn't knock the optics of any Canon. Whether or not I agree with your hearsay about the best lens in the business is a different story, but I didn't knock your lens or any other lens. I don't think Nikon or Canon hold a candle to some of the higher ups in this category (Zeiss, etc.).
All I said was that this guy should pick up a Nikon before he purchases the Canon. I find the whole Nikon line to be more comfortable in the hand (except the D40, I'm undecided on this one. I think it's too small for my hands.). As with anything you read, take it with a grain of salt as your mileage may vary.Don't ridicule me for what I said.
I'm not ridiculing you. I'm discrediting your statement about "everyone [saying]" that your (or any) point and shoot camera is "basically a 'bottom-barrel' DSLR." The physicalities of this just don't make sense, for the reasons I posted (Sensor Size/Noise, etc., see my previous post).
And what do you mean by there you go again? I took everything I said from my thread that others have posted. JJ made this thread asking for opinions, I gave mine.
I was making refrence to your other thread, this is what you said:
I dont even think I am going to upgrade to a DSLR since this is just as good.
'civickid04' was the only person to mention any comparison to DSLR. I generally value his opinion, mainly because he posted some great shots last week, but I don't think he's right and I wouldn't say that one person qualifies as "most" people as you said in this thread. Regardless, it was a cheap shot, I shouldn't have said it. Sorry.
Help the guy out or gtfo. It's simple.
One cheap shot deserves another. All I can say is that you might try reading through this thread again. Show me anyone else that has offered any specifics to back up their opinion. I think this guy should go for an SLR because he sounds serious. My reasons for doing so are listed my the previous post. I'm trying to help the OP out just as much as the next guy.

Im a nikon guy. I have a D40, D50, and S9. Of course the S9 is just a pretty basic point and shoot with video mode camera, but has a few nice features and alot smaller then the typical DSLR. Now the D50 i think is better then the D40 when it comes to evaluating everything about it and the price. I use my D50 for everyday use, personal photo's, and car shows that i attend mostly every weekend. And it has never let me down. Now the D40 has a few more features but then when you get into the price the D50 wins. I purchased my D50 about 2 years ago and has been a very nice camera. Now i havent looked at the price's of cameras lately so i dont know what they are costing now. But im sure you can find a new D40 for around 6-700$.

Im a nikon fan myself if you cant tell from the camera's i own. But whatever you go with im sure you will be happy. Just be carefull purchase a 1k+ camera on ebay. I would much rather go to the near by store and purchase it with a warrenty so there isnt any confusion if something happens with it.
The Nikon vs Canon argument is pointless... it's all in user preference and what better suits their needs.

Thanks Kirk.
Lets not make this another stupid pointless argument that will get us, well, ummm...Nowhere. Its all in what "you" want personally.
The reason Nikon, Canon, Sony...etc. Exist is the same reason McDonalds, Burger King, Whataburger...etc. Exists. Because people don't, and never will, like the same things as the next person.
You can please some people some of the time, but NEVER all of the people all of the time. Its all in what you what personally, and you all need to realize that.
They both lack where the other picks up.

just head to best buy or circuit city and give them all a try. There is a lot more than just canon and nikon out there. I rather like Pentax's setup, mainly just for their "limited pancake" lenses. Canon and Nikon have the most amount of support out there.

This is all I was trying to say. Don't blindly buy any camera on someone's reccomendation. I almost bought a Canon SLR, but then I held one and hated it. The ergonomics was my reason for buying another camera, you may agree or disagree but any educated buyer will compare and contrast before buying. My example did happen to be Nikon and Canon related, but I never tried to start a Canon vs Nikon war. My main argument was P&S vs SLR.

I'm jealous of the pancake lenses and the weather sealing of thier SLRs.

Nice, what did you buy for a tripod and how much did you pay (if you don't mind me asking).
Have you taken any shots yet, or are you still waiting for the battery to charge?

im still waiting on the battery to charge. lol.
That's the worst part of buying a camera, hands down. Waiting an hour or two to use it sucks.
As far as the tripod, you'll be fine with a cheap one for now (the one I have was inherited from my dad, it's about 20 years old and I found it on eBay once with a buy it now price (new) of $7.50). Just a quick tip for using the tripod, either use a remote or the timer to trip the shutter. That will give the camera to stop vibrating/moving after you've touched it.

who was makeing an arguemant? He asked for OPINIONS correct?
He asked for opions on camera's i gave mine. I own NIKON so that is what my opinion was based off of. I dont own any cannons so cant give input on them. if you read the last part of my post you would see that i stated "what ever you purchase im sure you will be happy."
sorry i thought the comments were directed to me.

actually when you get battery grip, it has a cartridge you can slide for AA batteries. But once youi load up the 2 canon batteries you can pretty much shoot all day. At a Formula D event, I would shoot 1600+ photos a day, and never totally kill the two batteries. I think I came close once when I shoot the Honda GP in 06, but that was from like 8 am till 6-7 pm
