John Force taken to Dallas hospital after top-end accident with Bernstein
http://www.nhra.com/2007/images/drivers/J_Force.jpgDrag racing's bigest star, 14-time champion John Force, was alert and conscious after suffering two broken legs and a broken arm in a nasty top-end collision Sunday with fellow straight-line legend Kenny Bernstein in the second round of eliminations at the O'Reilly NHRA Fall Nationals at Texas Motorplex outisde of Dallas. Force has been airlifted to Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas for further treatment. Their Funny Cars got together just as they crossed the finish line with Bernstein drifting over into Force's lane after clipping the final timing cone. The numbers, although unofficial, showed Force crossing with a 4.863 at 315.34 mph to Bernstein's 4.904 at 312.06 mph.

Bernstein was not injured in the incident, but Force was transported by LifeFlight Helicopter to Baylor for further evaluation. Team spokesman Dave Densmore reported Force's injuries to the media. NHRA.com will provide more information on this breaking story as it becomes available.

Wow.... it's not like he's any stranger to crashes and fireballs...but I hope he recovers nicely.

Ok... after watching the video, KB crossed onto the yellow line and hit the timing light boxes which flew into Force's car and caused the wreck.... I've never seen that before and I've been watching drag racing for 28 years.

I asked Donald if he thought the box caused the wreck, and he said that they said he blew a tire..it was just coincidence. Tire went flat.

The ominous part was watching the car cruise to the sand pit and you realize he is not with that part of th car.

So given where the break was his legs were just dangling out in the open after the car split. I am suprised he has any legs at all.

I heard something about it being worse than they initially said earlier.

Donald said he heard that it was a compound fracture in one leg, and a cut to the bone in the other leg. I'm sure it'll all be clear in a little while..

Many good thoughts for the Force family/team.

Alex Zanardi, lost both legs in the German Grand Prix. Is that the one you are thinking of ?

no, it was at indy a few years before that. At the beginning of the race, big crash. Ripped the front off of the car and the replays kept showing the car spinning and hitting the wall with nothing but the driver's legs hitting the wall.

the Zanardi crash was ugly too.

The indy crash was from 1995, in the opening lap..can't remember the drive or track name. I found it earlier on youtube, but I couldn't find a vid showing the legs crashing into the wall.

Actually, he didn't go into surgery until a couple hours ago. They made it sound like surgery was at 7pm our time. It's expected to be a 4 hour surgery. Doctors say chances of a full recovery are "very good." (they were worried about permanent tendon damage)

Monday, 1:30 a.m. Central: Good news from Baylor University Medical Center where doctors operating on 14-time NHRA Funny Car champ John Force were able to set his broken left ankle and determined that his wrist was not broken but just severely dislocated.

According to teamspokesman Elon Werner, doctors inserted three pins into Force's ankle to set it, and also inserted three temporary pins to stabilize his wrist.

Force came through the surgery well. A full update will be issued by the team midday Monday.

This just hasn't been his year, but good to see he is back to his old self at least interview-wise.

If you have an empty stomach you can actually find pictures a split second after Zanardi's collision, it ain't pretty thats all I'll say. Though I do believe Williams or Toyota fitted an F1 car with controls for him afterwards which is pretty cool.
