So I'm trying to figure out a system for a autocross car (86 LX) that will be driven to and from the track. I would like some tunes for the drive but I am trying to keep the weight down.
I am going to make the sub box and AMP rack removable so I can pop them out at the track. I have that all figured out.
I have all this stuff sitting in my garage from my previous Mustang. I was thinking about running everything off the MP3 player to make a simple install without needing a head unit.
Opinions on running a setup like this?

Never heard of something like that before. Not sure if it will work

3.5mm headphone jack - to - RCA converter and set the amp to 2ch mode. It will sound like shit but gets the job done.

Run the rca to some sort of signal booster, eq or preamp.

pfffffft, you dont need that, simple stereo minijack plug-to-RCA Y-cable is all you need. It will not sound the best but if you don't want to spend any money on a headunit and to keep weight down (all of what, 5 pounds..?) then it'll work. Just make sure you get it long enough.

Yeah he will get better sound out of just a boombox in the seat. Just get you one of those outdoor powered speakers from Brookstone. I got one for my birthday for the outside and they actually sound really good. Just plug in the ipod and your set.

nah it will definitely sound better than a boombox. This isnt ghettocarrigging.com.

The output from a ipod should be at just about 2.5v @ 300ma which is decent enough to drive a single amp.

Why not just go with a deck and 4 speakers would sound just as good if not better and much simpler less chance of problems

Had a guy i worked with do it and had it like that for a while and it worked fine to me... I thought it was kinda cool because he is the only one i had every seen do it and i had never even thought of it before that either. I've actually hooked it up like that since then to test amps to see if they work.
